James heads back to Moto Technique to see how Kevin and the boys are progressing with their most recent Evo Dino project as it nears completion.
The standard 246 Dino has been totally stripped back and re-built from the ground up. The shell has been taken back to bare metal and then re-sprayed, custom headlight and engine bay covers have been fabricated in house with matching paint detail giving a seamless finish against the bodywork.
The standard 2.4L V6 has been replaced with a 3.8 litre engine and gearbox from a Ferrari 328 boosting power from 180HP up to almost 400HP.

Lots of things to love on this Dino. The pops and bangs is best for teenagers in fast Fords. Totally out of place on this elegant car and do nothing but increase fuel consumtion and ruin backboxes. But that’s details - great effort👌

The Dino, in my opinion, is the most beautiful car ever designed. I have loved the Dino ever since I set eyes on it, in the Persuaders, driven by the Kate Tony Curtis. It's proportions are exquisite and the lines divine. It's design came from heaven.

I was thinking the same thing. When he said "the wheel arches look great", I thought "don't kid yourself". Notice that the owner didn't nod and say "yeah they do, don't they?". He only pointed out they had to be there because of the enormous wheel/tire combo. They're ugly and he knows it.

1980 - my garage (where I worked) we were selling a Dino 246 - nice clean car - maybe not the very best but a nice car for £9900. The same year the boss bought a new Vauxhall Royal (Opel Senator) for £10K - so in today's money you're talking £35/40K - however today a similar standard (before restomod) Dino would be circa £300K+

@@larrysmith6797 i dont remember the wheel arches extending out so far. Id prefer fenders closer to stock. The wheel well lip is larger than what was stock back when the beautiful 246 released. I re,e,ber as it and the muira were my favorite sports cars from the 1960s. Expensive though for sure. Glad to see the resto mod being built. My own personal opinion would be a little less tire width and less of an extended flair to cover the tires. In person Im sure its totally stunning as is. Wonderful video

Those headlight covers blend in so much better to the lines of the car than the original ones; the sharp angle where they met the wing used to really grate! And the flares look more appropriate on this car with the bigger wheels than they did back in the '70s on 205/14 XWXs. I still have the photos of my Dino going through Moto Technique's workshops in the 1980's. But that was back when they were really cheap and at only 10 or so years old it was just having all the rusty bits cut out and replaced. Should have asked then for another 200 bhp, and kept the car!

The Evo Dino is a super piece of work. Mr O'Rourke and his team can be rightly proud of this. The noisy, fast Ford exhausts are for...California. I'm not sure whether IVA will approve when this is tested. Nothing was said about the interior but Rob has done a super job. It would be interesting to know the final weight - the 246 GT was 1080 kg. 0n this basis the power to weight would be 361 per ton (assuming 390 bhp at the flywheel).

Evo or Stock, very tough decision. I like the tractability of the larger engine but prefer the sound of the V6. I find the wheels too busy for that little car and would prefer the 5-spoke Campagnolo. The flairs on the Dino always looked tacked on and need to be fared into the fender to preserve those beautiful curves. Really like the headlight covers but find the modern sty;e dot transition inappropriate for the car. Think the clear engine cover is also too showy.

The mechanic is certainly skilled and seems to have done a fantastic job, however, I would prefer personally the original six cylinder engine transmission. The Dino is just so pretty in standard form. From a pure design element, the profile is balanced to perfection. With the current engineering and bodyshop tooling, is there no way of blending the wheel arch 'extensions' to better suit those beautiful curves? What a shame. To all the car journos out there - never, ever wear denim (with horrible studs?) to sit in/drive in super soft leather. What next? Sitting on the front wing(s) discussing how lovely the car is .......... ?

I think they should have made the fenders extend to the wheels like stock and not just added the flare kit on the fenders, looks....not right. Of course, just adding the fender flares is easier and less expense and faster to do. Re-bending and adding length to the fenders to reach out to the new wheels would have been a better look...cleaner and more natural like from a factory, but take more time and more money.

This is a nice example of what can be done to suit an individual's taste - beautiful workmanship and detail, (those headlight covers are exquisite), great color and paint finish but...........I prefer the V6 Dino sound over the snarling, crackling Ferrari V8 - it doesn't quite fit the car. And the wheel arches are beautifully done but awkward - can't beat the original "flares and chairs", in my opinion. But the Dino is gorgeous in it's own right - tweaking it runs the danger of having Bridget Bardot in a cheap wig and sloppy makeup.
