If you enjoyed TLOU, you should try Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando. Like TLOU, but 10x more story depth, atmosphere, creativity, style, humor, more memorable characters, greater lore, and of course the gameplay, systems, fun, etc are all another level. It expands on TLOU's QTEs and cinematic sequences, by instead putting you in control of those sequences, with more gameplay freedom and variety of approach.

After playing the game again after watching the HBO show, I will strongly say the game is still the definitive edition to experience of the last of us for one strong reason... the subtle storytelling within gameplay. No other media genre can recreate this no matter how hard they try and that's why the last of us is praised so much it because of this reason. If the Last of Us was originally just a show, people wouldn't think much of it cause it's already been done before like Logan.

Really great retrospective on a truly iconic piece of media and cross-disciplinary art. One thing that wasn’t mentioned in the video that is highly relevant is the fact that the *acting* was top notch. Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker acted the hell out of the game-it wasn’t like they sat behind a booth and read lines, either. Rather, they got to act out the game much in the same way the Avatar films were performance-captured. I believe this not only gave the game a unique visual realism that remains largely unmatched; but it added tons of layers and nuance to the performances and the powerful emotions that made the game what it is. While this also comes from excellent writing, it was Ashley and Troy’s performances that really sold the world on these characters.

I don't think Joel necessarily recovered too quickly... Ellie had already been nursing him for months (Fall until thick snow). The shot of penicillin might have just been to knock out the final fever and infection. Also, how the in the world is "these guys knocked me unconscious mid-resuscitation, separated us, are rushing a lethal surgery before letting Ellie even wake up, and are now marching me out of the building without supplies or weapons, so I'm going to save her" him being bad?
@GameOverloadMO

@@GameOverloadMOcreators dont get to choose how we interpret their art work. They present us Joel doing some actions and choices in a very extreme context (a divided world in survival mode). We judge him according to what they show us, the context (helping a stranger can get you killed) and our own morality system. If they wanted him to be unambiguosly bad, then they did a bad job writting him. At the end, the fact that about half people think Joel was wrong AND half people think he was right is what has given relevance AND timelessness to the story. When the creator is telling us "no really guys, he was bad and if he had not saved Ellie the world would be saved, ha ha ha, we made you play as the bad guy" after showing us a complex world where everyone Is killing each other, untrust each other and nothing Is certain; he is just shooting himself in the foot, denying the complexity of the world he created. Like, are you telling me It was guaranteed that by killing Ellie; a group that was obliterated by ONE GUY would actually develop the vaccine, produce It massively, give It away to everyone including their enemies without getting attacked first and then restore the world to an state of peace and cooperation???? Arent all groups full of hatred and thirst for revenge (you know, THE CENTRAL THEME OF THE SEQUEL)??? Would having a vaccine change that??? Also, humans surviving 20 years could make me think they can actually survival the fungus eventually, so there Is no certainty of world's Doom neither. I mean, one of the main themes Is "humans are the real monsters" displacing the infected to a second plane.

I am often hyper obsessed with analyzing all little details and alternative explanations. After finishing this game, I spent dozens of hours thinking about it and watching videos like this on it. Joel was right 100%. Unfortunately, if you think too closely you will discover that the answer to the "dilemma" was more clear cut than you'd see at surface value (and I don't mean it was clear the vaccine should be pursued, quite the opposite). I try not to let it ruin the rest of the game and story but the dilemma is truly overemphasized. There was little to no reason to kill Ellie and the fireflies have only themselves to blame. Like why didn't they ask for Ellie's opinion? And why did the fireflies be so unnecessary secretive when they could've been more upfront or at least tried the alternatives? And what about the practical/logistical ways in which a cure could even be distributed? Also, it's not smart to kill (one of) your only sources of a cure. If it doesn't work would you even be able to try again? So the vaccine wasn't even guaranteed and the fireflies were incompetent beyond belief. Joel was right.

Not to mention, the fireflies have demonstrated time and time again how grossly incompetent they are. various lore items in part one point towards the fact that they would almost certainly been unsuccessful even if the operation had gone through. (although this was retconned in part two)
@liswane
@liswane 4 ай бұрын
While I agree it's pretty obvious how incompetent the fireflies are, I don't think it takes anything away from the dilemma the game was posing. Yes, the fireflies probably didn't have to kill Ellie, but putting one self inside this world, they only had one competent doctor as far as we know, and the only procedure he knew would result in Ellie's death, which, in the doctor's eyes, is one life for the millions they could save with a possible cure. Joel wasn't rationalizing whether these people could or couldn't make a cure successfully, he was only thinking that he can't lose Ellie, and if he has to go through all these people, he won't hesitate. The central question is like the trolley problem, do you kill this one child that's become your adopted daughter or do you kill everyone else at the hospital and possibly doom humanity? Which life has more value? Which one is the right choice? And which one is the human, emotional choice? Of course, once you play the game as Joel, his choice becomes the right one, but objectively the fireflies' choice still had some merit. Desperate times call for desperate measures. Idk, this is why it's such a compelling story, because every character isn't always making the "right" or morally unquestionable choice, they're just trying to survive.
@brodude7194
@brodude7194 3 ай бұрын
Choice is the single most defining element why Joels decision was justified. You have to be one hell of a psychopath to kill a human being without consent, even in the name of greater good, and feel morally justified. There's just no excuse for that.

It was also a game that brought me back into playing video games again. It was also something that bonded my deceased father and I. He was never into video games but he was captivated by the story, the characters and the world. Connection - exactly as you well put it - is one of the most remarkable Naughty Dog has created. It was a game that brought people together to have indepth discussions and a game i recommended people to play. Now more people are playing the game because of the HBO series - again connecting and reconnecting people because of the game's iconic story, characters and world building. Fantastic video essay! To me, the ending is on Joels side: In a world like that, the incompetent Fireflies would have never created a vaccine that " would have saved humanity". They could have tested on her sure, but Ellies death wouldnt have been worth the little chance of success. Ellie turning against Joel in Part2 for that decision is heart- braking for both of them. She wanted her life " to mean something" but Joel took the right decision for her at age 14.

Something that I don't see mentioned often is the fact that both Joel and the Fireflies took away Ellie's choice in her contribution to the possible cure. The fireflies decided for her that she would sacrifice for a cure that still hadn't even decided if they could make and Joel decided she wouldn't. While she said later that she would've done whatever she had to for the cure, that's an easy statement when your death isn't hanging on the choice. Both Joel and Marlene made choices for Ellie while she was unconscious that took away her autonomy and her input on her own life and he level of contribution to what was still not a sure thing. The layers of moral ambiguity are what makes this game so great.

But Joel didn't take her choice away. The only choice he had was walk away or save her. The only mistake Joel made was not being honest with her.

@gravybate2283 Joel took away her choice when he shot Marlene and then lied to her. He eliminated any chance she had to make the choice after that. Killing Marlene was the point of no return for Joel removing her say in the matter.

@brkfst4dnr none of the 3 were capable of being unbiased. Ellie had survivors guilt and trauma on top of it. Marlene never cared what Ellie wanted, and Joel would maybe be okay with Ellie's death if he got to talk to her. Maybe.

One thing I dont agree with Is ellie losing her innocence after david, She does lose it in the second game eventually but I dont think she did until the events of the second game, She has the exact same personality in the flashbacks in the second game, innocent, charming, funny, fun to be around

Can you imagine if Instead of what we got for Part 2 we instead get to play a vengeful Joel as he hunts down every firefly for having killed Ellie in pursuit of a cure that failed and thus losing a daughter all over again? Maybe my imagination is too out there but i need to seen that multiverse just once.

Great review. I totally agree with the comparison between the game and series. I did like the series but though it felt really undercooked compared to the game. Maybe it was just a testiment to how good of a medium gaming is for story telling.

I think one of the biggest issues that no one seems to talk about is that no one, not Joel, not Marlene, not the doctor, no one did the one thing that kind of makes them all really shitty. No one asked Ellie what she wanted to do. We all know Ellie ends up pissed off that Joel decided things for her. But so did the Fireflies. Everyone made decisions for Ellie, as if she's not her own person but just a tool for saving humanity, or just Joel's surrogate daughter. She's really objectified when you think about it.

I’ve seen this issue discussed before. It seems to fall back on the fact that she’s a child and possibly can’t fully comprehend the decision as an adult could, therefore they take the action.

What a great video on what so many of us think is the greatest game ever!! To this day I'm yet to play another game that is as perfect as this is. The game play might be the only negative, but the world, the story and the characters = perfect. It's just my all time favourite.

Imagine if instead of killing Joel they killed Ellie, and Joel while on a quest for revenge, would have had to deal with his grief and the fact that he took that choice from Ellie for no reason. Marline was right. What the point of saving her then when something else was going to kill her not long after.

Yeah I think of alot of linear Half - Life like games where it's just an action adventure with linear story based narratives but open ended gameplay. The Last of Us P1 was truely the peak of its kind. There are probably some other story based action games that mix cinematic elements with gameplay to get memories out of me, but I also look back at this game inparticular as one that felt as though it came the closest Little Nightmare 2 was probably the closest I've ever felt where just like in TLOU, I was like, man what do I do with my life now.

I adore this game, and the Left Behind DLC is beautiful and bittersweet. Both games have us playing in a VERY morally grey area, but not without some hope. The ultimate message is that we have to keep fighting for something. Joel is so complex, loving one minute and broken after Sarah’s death. Ellie acts obviously as that counter to him. I feel like he is afraid to get too close to another because he fears that he will lose them again. In fact, it’s clear that our main characters are both most afraid of winding up alone. So much more could be said about Joel’s decision at the end, but you understand WHY he did it. Furthermore, Marlene and the Fireflies actually seem not only antagonistic but incompetent. Ellie is so endearing, and has suffered a lot. I am not a fan of those tedious puzzles that break up the gameplay, and there are a few conveniences to be sure. But it’s near-perfect, and why it’s timeless despite its flaws!

20:32 I’d further make the argument that Joel outright rejects the idea of “sacrificing the few to save the many” in part due to his delivery of that explanation to Ellie as well as his lived experience. That mindset is what threatened his life at the beginning of the game and cost Sarah hers. That mindset is something he bought into by being a hunter and eventually regretted. That mindset is what David and other hunter clans continue to thrive on at his expense. That mindset is ultimately what risks Ellie’s life. I don’t think Joel ever believed in the idea of “sacrifice the few to save the many” because, for him, there doesn’t seem to be much of a point. I further think this buys into his rejection of hope because any cause for hope (like the fireflies, which took his brother from him and continue to threaten the new status quo in which Joel is comfortable) has felt unrealistic in a world where humanity no long cares for itself. To “arbitrarily” choose a sacrifice (in Joel’s mind) for the sake of the world doesn’t work for Joel because he will never believe again that it would ever be worth it. It simply would never last.

0:27 I don’t know why ND kept changing Ellie’s eyes. They tried to give her adult eyes, perhaps to try to convey the trauma she’s endured for her years, but children don’t have adult eyes. They have child’s eyes. The first was perfect, they should have left it.
