I decided to take the Triumph Thruxton 900 out today and NOTHING went as planned. Check out how my riding goes on this motorcycle now that I have a little more seat time in. I love Triumphs, but is this the right bike for me as a beginner rider?!

FORGET ALL OF THAT! I have a 2013 Thruxton with 30,000 miles on it, and it is a stellar bike. Runs, Drives and Handles Great! It’s not a super sport crotch rocket… it is what it is, and it does it well. Some can’t help but complain about everything…

I think motorcycling in general is something that needs to be done with confidence and a good understanding of how everything is working. A lot of timid riders fall off or are unstable is because going slow makes the bike more unstable and and harder to control just like a push bike. So the more worried, timid or unsure of everything you do on a motorcycle you are, the harder and more unstable everything you do will be.

Good to see you out on the Triumph again, Jackie! Do you see the pads on the side of the gas tank? Those are to protect your knees because you can have more control over the bike if you squeeze the gas tank in between your knees. It doesn't have to be forceful, and you don't have to do if all the time either. I just squeeze the tank any time I have to make a maneuver. It's a little thing but it can help give you some confidence when you see that you have more control over the bike. And by the way, that bike is not that much heavier than the Sportster if it's just 500 lbs!

Maybe you switch back to something you are more comfortable with for a while and then move back up to the Thruxton. I’m not sure it’s a beginners bike.

I wanted to see if it was a little easier now that I've practiced more, but I am definitely not ready to ride this one regularly! I'll be sticking to the Sportster for now. Not the bike for me at the moment!! Thanks for watching!

The problem with the thruxton or just bikes with the ergonomics of it are the bars. They are designed for straight line and sweeping curves, like a track. Picture yourself with a bike with say 10 inch long handlebars. U can't turn them with any real assuredness. Any road change is going to pull them right outta your hands. Especially at low speed. I dare any rider to ride with no hands through the city. Or just hold the handlebars in the center. I know she has handlebars, but they are like suicide, or drag bars. Made for straight line, flat surface hauling arse. Or on an oval, where u can lean steer. I think that was her issue. You heard she's ridin several other bikes. But more cruiser styled riding. Just my opinion.

Wobble , wobble, wobble, it's my life . Heck , I even wobble when I walk being top heavy. Keep the faith and smile, that is what riding is all about. Slow and steady wins the race. Ride well

Hang in there, Jackie! That seating position won't make much sense until you start going faster than 70mph. At slow speeds it can be harsh, at high speeds the wind helps lift you up and will feel perfectly fine then.

I have the 2013 Thruxton, a tune, British Customs full exhaust k&n Filter and bigger intake. I would never recommend this bike for a beginner at 500+lbs. Also give more gas on starts, front wheel isn’t going up

It's funny how the seating position can make it feel worlds different. Even for someone who's been riding for a few years. I just rode a SV1000s back to East Mesa from Surprise and it was such a different experience from what I'm use to, even having some experience with the SV650S. Keep practicing and knowing your limits and you'll be keeping up with Jon in no time! Great to see your Triumph making it into a video!

I own Thruxton 900, and still my fav bike among others. Yes I agree, not much of a beginner bike bcoz of the weight. Try to study & feel the counter steering, you will feel it a lot easier handling it. Good luck.

Thruxton is a sweet looking bike for sure! I have the 2019 Street Twin which has more upright ergonomics, really love it. You'll get the hang of it before long; just gotta get used to that sportier riding position. You'll be carving up corners in no time!

Yes to the triumph street twin. I test road the 2019 and as of right now that's likely to be my next bike. Besides the neutral/standard riding position, it also has a seat height that is just hair under 30 inches. I am 5'5" and I can flat foot the street twin with boots on. Jackie, you should check out the street twin at some point.

Obviously when you are almost laying on the tank, your not going to have the balance control on low speed turns. Especially with the super low handlebars. And less wide handlebars. It's like riding with no handlebars. But yes, your takeoffs you have to master. And every bike has a little different throttle feel. U really have to listen to the engine when you launch. Do a dozen starts and stops. Till u hear and feel the throttle, then feather the clutch after u hear engine sound. Try doing it with no helmet. Just starts and stops. Thats how I taught my son. I made sure he could start and stop flawlessly before actually riding. But u certainly chose a bike with a more track ride stance. Until u get your launches down pat, falling may be in the cards. Probably by now you've either got it, or not. Good luck.

Way too heavy for you. The Thruxton 900 and Bonneville are the same bike. 4 bhp difference. Too heavy for you, seat is too high, and it is too wide. I work with Bonneville Performance in Daytona, we take off 60-80 pounds and can up the hp to 105 at the wheel. At a cost $$$$. Many people opt for this because like you the stock bike has many draw backs. The new liquid cooled Bonneville ( street twin/T100/Street Cup) are lighter and many are coming on the market cheap as people are up grading to the T120/ Thruxton 1200. I hated all my 3 Bonnevilles for the weight, now I have a 1200 Thruxton which weighs less and it not top heavy. I love Triumphs , been riding them 40 years before you were born, a real British company then, all made in England. Try the new 900s or a Yamaha MT/FZ 07=400 pounds 25 more hp ( rear wheel hp on that Thruxton is about 58 -62 on the dyno). Don't get frustrated the bike doesn't fit you, we have all had to learn.

It’s NOT the ergonomics. This isn’t your fault. It’s the SAI. Triumph put a secondary air injection system on the bike for emissions. It makes this bike really “snatchy” on the throttle. I have a 2014. You need to get rid of that system. Since you have aftermarket exhaust, you should remove the baffle from the air box and re-map the fuel. You’ll find it’s MUCH EASIER to ride after you do this. Please look into this, you’ll see it’s very common.

On a bike like that you have to use your abs to take the weight off your wrist. It will feel weird for a bit using your abs and back muscles to support your upper body weight. Just my experience with bikes with that type of seating position.

2014 thruxton owner here, thruxton was my first bike too. being 5'6' - 5'7' u could imagine my struggle tip-toe maneuvering the bike around and with the bike being top heavy it was hard for me as a beginner practicing in low speed (i ended up dropping it on the left side). The aggressive stance on the bike didnt help too. after awhile i got used to it and soon started riding in the canyons. also i started to put upgrades on it. i highly recommend progressive shocks and fork springs. The only thing i wish could be better was the ergonomics as i was getting back pains riding for extended periods. Have fun practicing and keep the shiny side up!

Many people have faced issues with (admittedly newer) bonnevilles that had a stalling issue because of over lean fuelling from the factory due to emissions. You might want to check if a nifty little guy called "booster plug" works for your bike. Might I also recommend you check out motojitsu videos. I had a speed triple and dropped it twice a 0kmph because I was struggling with handling the weight. And triumphs are top heavy. But his stuff really really sorted me out with technique and put me in control. You might also want to grip the tank with your legs and adjust the ergos of the bike to your size. Seems like you've to reach out a LOT for the clip ons. Check out motojitsu's channels. Especially with slow speed manouvers. It will sort you out :) you can do it!

Its gorgeous bike, but may be better trading for a triumph t100 or t120 bonneville. Really good upright standard riding position. The newer ones are lot better feeling, not as top heavy when they swapped to the 270 crank. Also makes em sound better too.

Keep coaching yourself and practice . Ride it with a tiny more aggression modest aggression and be physical with it you're confidence real grow little by little but probably wicker than you think. To really get on top of it ban yourself from using your other motorcycles for 3 weeks only use the Thruxton things will fall into place for you and you will have it.

That going to time lapse (video is my default setting) has happened to me with my Hero 5 too, I was hoping that was a quirk of my cam. I just got a Hero 7 and had hopes it would not do it. If your Hero 8 does it too well... Don't give up, you'll get it, just ride it more, but don't push yourself too hard. Now that it's hot maybe you guys could haul your bikes to a cooler elevation to ride. Like Prescott, Payson, or Flagstaff?

Great bike but uncomfortable and heavy as. I am a biker for over 25 years owned over 62 bikes in my life and probably this bike for whatever reason you can actually feel the weight. It feels like you are trying to move a brick. Love the style but hated the ride, even though i own few larger harleys, but the weight distribution is good. Anyway you gotta like what u like i guess, definitely not a beginner bike though only because of the weight. Not the power as its so low
