Revisiting Tomb Raider Legend (2023 Review)

While I don’t love that combat is the main focus, nor that the main elements of Tomb Raider are stripped down, there is still fun to be had with Tomb Raider Legend in 2023. Lara Croft herself and the Croft Manor bonus level are the main standouts. And you can buy it for as low as $1 on sale.

A buddy of mine and I played this on my Sega Saturn (yeah I was the other person that bought one lol) and absolutely loved it. Was disappointed the sequel didn't get released on it but by that time I was deciding on switching to the N64 after seeing Mario 64 and Goldeneye, happy days. The Legend trilogy is by far my favorite. Keeley Hawes voiced Lara to perfection. And to hear that she will be returning to voice Lara in the Call of Duty / Warzone as an operative is awesome as heck. Even though she will have minimal lines, it will be a pleasure to hear her voice again.

I am currently playing trilogy just for underworld on PS3!!!! Just recently got it!!!!! And the PS3 also have legend for psp and anniversary beautiful ports!!!!!! Yes Keely looks and does the best as Lara underworld is so beautiful to look at beat the PS2 version now I get to beat the other version and enjoy it!!!!!! Yes these are some of the greatest tomb raiders!!!!!!! Can't deny Keely did amazing as Lara love how the modeled after her!!!!!!!

It would probably sound funny, but when I first played the game, the comments from Lara’s team made me feel that I am not alone in that super unhealthy environment where Lara was killing bloody tourists and solving puzzles and it actually helped me emotionally to finish levels. Compared to Tomb Raider Anniversary where you were completely alone.😅

Honestly, Legends was a great way to revitalize the series. It updated the controls and gameplay, while keeping the feel similar to the original games. I love the legends trilogy than the new trilogy (TR, Rise, Shadow).

The soundtrack and the atmosphere of each level were so good in TR Legend. Lara's sassy personality was always there , Keeley Hawes simply pushed it even further and gave the character more life. The story of this reboot was actually pretty good , shrouded with mystery to what really happend to Emilia made even better when u encounter her in Underworld.I stand by it , the ending custscene with Amanda was the best TR ending ever. I dont care what anyone says lmao

TR Legend will always have a special place in my heart. As a kid, i always found the TR games hard, mostly because of puzzles, so i hadn't finished any yet, but still loved them. Until one day, i was playing TR Legend and... the credits started to roll. 10 year old me was exploding with happiness, i actually have tears in my eyes right now just remembering that moment. After that, it was Underworld, Anniversary, the survivor trilogy, you name it. Legend wasn't just the first Tomb Raider that i finished, it was also a turning point for me when it comes to Tomb Raider

I actually thought the banter and constant talking was one of the best things about this game, I thought it felt natural and entertaining, and it helped make the game feel more alive compared to its sequel which felt rather bland in comparison.

As someone who only played the GBC games and seen the second movie prior to Legend (making it my first main line entry) i always felt Lara’s team was bringing it in line with the movies more than anything (or as a kid thought that was how it always was lol) going back to all the games now I can see the complaints with this one but by no means did i ever feel the voice chat was detrimental (nor do i now), in fact it totally fit the tone of the game.

This is possibly the first story-line game I ever played as a kid, and I'm always looking for more content on it. It's very short, and not all that difficult, but for the era it was excellent graphically, didn't waste your time, and was a definite improvement on Angel of Darkness imo. Unlike the 2013 reboot (which I did enjoy) this _felt_ like a Tomb Raider game, and Lara Croft was definitely Lara Croft. I wish makers would build on the things the Legend trilogy did well (think Lara's versatile move set in Underworld) and combine it with an exploratory environment. 2013 was a safe, generic Uncharted copy, with cheesy dialogue. This brand still has so much potential; I wish a big developer recognised why TR/Lara was special

Before Rise came out this was my favorite title in the series so far. The main reason is the dialog with her friends, there are two types, the smalltalk type and "history learning stuff" type like the one in 5:44. If you just listen to the game you actually learn a lot about the King Arthur, Excalibur saga in a good way without breaking the flow. If you see Underworld for example which dont have the dialoge with the friend to present the story, because many people disliked the chatty friends in legend, so you learn actually nothing about the nordic mythology although the team did a lot of research of it. But because the game is not chatty, the developer decided to put that in diaries no one had ever read, what a waste. Imagine if they had also processed that in dialogues during the gameplay, Underworld would be a significantly better game because at the end of the game you would actually have been smarter simply because you would have learned something passively, like in Tomb Raider Legend.

I get the complaints of classic series fans when it comes to Legend, but to me a lot of what those complaints are centered around are actually Legend's strengths. And i dont agree that Legend is too action focused, it does a good job at balancing it out with platforming and puzzle sections.

I remember being so excited when this game came out as a huge TR fan, I think I was like 12 lol. I was disappointed with how short it is. And I actually loved the dialogue with the other characters, esp Zip because I remembered him from Tomb Raider: Chronicles. I have probably played Legend at least 15 times.

I really love TR Legend. The voices of the companions are an interesting change to the loneliness of previous games. The diversity of levels was also welcomed and a cool mix, from Bolivia to Japan and Nepal. Also, I found the soundtracks fitting with the mood of the stages. I've just finished playing this game for probably the 10th time. I love it as much now as I did the first time I played it. I know it's short and not awfully difficult, but it's a great story. Lara looks and sounds amazing. She has way more charisma than the 2013 Lara.

Great review. I agree with a lot of your points, except for the annoying companions part, Lol. I can understand why people find them annoying, but I really didn't mind them at all. I actually like them and the conversations they have. Mostly because it gave Lara an excuse to talk and see more of her character and Keeley Hawes amazing performance. While I do have problems with this game, it's hard to hate because it's very charming.

Being fair, legends was one of the first games to implement QTE. Before that we had RE4 but i think legends nailed that. As you mentioned at the beggining, the fall of TR started when the publisher went greedy and wanted a new TR each year, which quickly caused a massive burnout. It was so bad that the devs actually killed off Lara on TR4. They literally didn't told to their bosses until it was way too late to change it. TR rose from the ashes with Legends. I remember that everyone was worried that the franchise would die and legend felt like the Lara we knew since the 1st game. I hope that we would go back to that era, cuz reboot Lara fractured the entire fanbase (I tried to like reboot lara but CD killed the franchise with how they handled it IMO). Thankfully there's the newest skin dropped on COD which has a more accurate version of Lara than whatever CD tried to do this last 10 years

Tomb Raider II was the first game I ever finished. I liked its more cinematic approach to the infuriatingly hermetic puzzle solving of the first game. I played the third game but didn't finish, and basically never bothered with any others until Legend. While it did rely on action too much, to me at the time it was a revelation, bringing the aging series into modern times. I loved Lara as well - with most of the heavy lifting being done by the amazing Keeley Hawes who played her in Anniversary, Underworld and the mobile games as well. I also thought the soundtrack was excellent throughout and added so much to the overall vibe. I will always defend the Crystal Dynamics trilogy.

Every game these days has companions for the main hero, if that bothers you here doesn't it also in Uncharted and Mass Effect and whatnot? Anyway, I feel Tomb Raider Legend is the quintessential Tomb Raider game, not gameplay wise perhaps, but in tone, admosphere, character and Lara Croftness.

Omg a tomb raider review 2023 I have the trilogy got it just for underworld and I have legend and anniversary for my psp 3000 yeah these graphics still tock today anyone looking for games getva PS3 PS2 whatever more affordable still get the same great graphics and also you'll get more art that you can ever ask for when games back then had that!!!!!! Even have the reboot for PS3 yes def a fun one also!!!!!! Legend is a fun one but I've had many versions and they weren't worth it the reboot for PS4 def is worth it more on PS3 the hair effects and everything seeing dirt on lara tomb raider my brother played but I started playing them growing up.....tomb raider 2 for ps1 was a fun one also so happy to have tomb raider and Keely looks and nailed it as Lara!!!!!!!

Legend, then Anniversary and Max Payne 2 these were the games that showed me that game characters could be something more than chunky and clunky. Loved them and they were fun without being keyboard intensive IQ quiz micro management nightmares. Demake? Noooooo we need a Remake up to the Rise of the Tomb Raider visual level. But overall yeah played great for me.

This game was too short. I know we live in the age of reboots and stuff but a twentieth anniversary remake or reimagining of TRL would be nice, if somewhat fleshed out as I feel the story way too short in the og, however, the game was fun.

The crashing thing isn't particularly a thing about the game, as much as it might be some kind of driver issue in your hardware. I played this whole game with Next Gen content on; never had any crashing.

This is definitely my favorite game in the series! I disagree though, I feel like it had a good mix of combat and exploration, and even the fact that Toby Gard said this is the direction they would have loved to take for the original had they not been constrained to the technology of the time. So I think this is the best modern representation of what the creator of Lara Croft wanted.

7:22 Honestly, even from pre-release, I never liked her next-gen look. Clearly this game was built primarily for the PS2 / Gamecube /Xbox hardware. Therefore the overall art design is complete compared to the next-gen’s incomplete version (Lara’s eyes don’t even move in the Japan outfit along with other outfits!). Her skin stone is also inconsistent throughout. Meanwhile Amanda still has her “PS2 look” just glossed over. It’s too bad because the lighting / shading and water effects are amazing.

This particular trilogy of tomb Raider games were always my favorite, but they definitely show their age. None of them are bad but they are filled with a lot of pretty outdated game design techniques from the time, particularly lots of QTE events. But when I think of Lara Croft this is the character that pops into my mind. Legend, anniversary, and underworld all still mostly embody what I imagine when I think of tomb Raider All of that being said I think rise of the tomb Raider from the reboot/survivor trilogy is still probably the best game in the franchise overall

Legend is too easy, too short, and too linear. This game is a huge water down version of the original classic games. Not the best TR game by a mile. The classic trilogy (1-3) and Anniversary are sooo much better IMO

sucks that the game still crashes even with new hardware which means its an issue with the game itself.

Besides that, a system that's to new for an old game can let it crash as well. Unless you're into tweaking everything, it might work smooth without problems

I still prefer legend to the newest series. cant stand thsoes games despite being visually better. And u think legend striped back on the puzzle solveing? in the new games the only time u get puzzles is in designated puzzle rooms that are optional so u can actuly do most of the game without getting a single one. it dosnt even feel as good as uncharted witch is the obvs game its trying to be so it sucks as a tomb raider game cus lack of puzzles and it sucks as a uncharted game cus it donst go hard enough on the action so its just a masive pile of nothing.
