Are some of your glazes a little older and hard to brush onto your pottery?
In this livestream, we demonstrated adding AMACO® Gum Solution to an old jar of PC-38 to improve its brushability and slow the drying time which results in a more even and consistent application.
Old, thick glazes can be brought back to their original creamy consistency by thinning the glaze with water first, then adding about a tablespoon of AMACO® Gum Solution, or as much as needed to obtain good brushability without drag. AMACO® Gum Solution will prevent glazes from drying fast and cracking.

What if your glaze is rock hard? Can you still use gum solution to bring it back?

I have a lot of glazes that I was given to me that are 20 years old. Do you think the colors change after time or can be restored? I kind of doubt it but wanted to ask
@AMACOBrent
@AMACOBrent Жыл бұрын
The colors don't change, but some glaze hard-pan or gel over time. It can be difficult to restore some glazes that are 20 years old, but Gum Solution would be the first step. ~Cara

Good suggestion for thinning but what can you use for glaze that is too thin in order to thicken? My seaweed is too loose!
@AMACOBrent
@AMACOBrent 2 жыл бұрын
You can dehydrate it by leaving the lid off for a day or two but be aware it may take fewer coats to get the same effects if it's been thickened up.

@@AMACOBrent of you don’t mind I have another question. I recently saw a video by Cara about gold lustures. She informed us about the danger of fumes. I was wondering if they were still giving off dangerous fumes after they are put on, when they are dry and during the firing?
@AMACOBrent
@AMACOBrent 2 жыл бұрын
@@rOHRshackartpottery the fumes are hazardous while the luster is in liquid form and while firing. I don't know about when they are dry.

Can you just add water to an underglaze?
@AMACOBrent
@AMACOBrent 3 жыл бұрын
To return your thickened underglazes to their original creamy consistency we recommend adding distilled water and Gum Solution. If you add water to thickened or dried out underglaze without adding Gum Solution the results will likely be chunky, perhaps crack, and be more prone to smudging.

Will this work for underglazes to make them easier to paint with?
@AMACOBrent
@AMACOBrent Жыл бұрын
Amaco underglazes already have Gum Solution, but just like with glazes the Gum can degrade over time. If your underglazes are not brushing smoothly you can add a small amount of Gum to refresh them. ~Cara

What’s in this gum solution? CMC ?

Our Gum Solution contains a number of ingredients meant to make Amco glazes brush easily and adhere to the ware. I beleive CMC is an ingredient but there is more than just CMC. ~Cara

Why gum instead of glycerin?
@AMACOBrent

All other suspensions have a very short shelf life and are not suitable to use in Amaco glazes. We use our own Amaco gum solutions that can last for several years. Hope this answers your question!

@@DyAnnJacobs As long as you don't se any cracking or peeling on the glaze before it goes into the kiln it's probably fine. If there's cracking or peeling there is a chance the glaze will crawl in firing. If it's peeling a lot you may want to remove the glaze and reglaze before firing. You can add gum solution to your remaining glaze for future use.
