That old hunk of junk laptop that you have kicking around could be more than a paperweight... And it might be easier to fix than you'd think.

Basically just wasted 7mins of my life so that someone could show me putting a SSD in your old laptop speeds up your boot time. No shit, Linus it's 2017; you can do better. p.s. The thumbnail is very misleading. Click bait?

Here's how to revive an old laptop: 1. Install an SSD 2. Add more RAM 3. Replace the keyboard if it is user replaceable 4. Add a higher resolution screen if you can (Like the dell latitude e64x0's or the thinkpad t4x0's) 5. Either add a fresh install of windows, or install a less resource intensive OS 6. Get a new battery Anything I missed? Let me know because I'm genuinely curious.

I don't like where LTT is going. What are these thumbnails? I mean, why is there water in the thumbnail when the video is literally how to install an SSD? I thought this would be about water damage or something. And the video quality seems to have gone down too. Constant buzzing in the audio too and the video quality didn't seem so great either. I get it, click bait gets views, but it just seems desperate and low quality. Maybe it's just because it's been the holidays, but I hope this isn't the direction this channel is going.

This video feels like one of the lowest effort produced in a long while. I think most people watching the channel will briefly know the benefits of an SSD over a HDD, and this isn't exactly a one-size-fits-all guide to install an SSD. I'd even go as far to say this might be better suited for Techquickie, giving an explanation of each major component's (CPU, RAM, storage, even wifi, etc) effect on basic performance like web browsing, and how easily (if) it can be upgraded.

You skipped the HDD cloning process, arguably the most important step. Some people don't want to start from scratch. This was also REALLY basic, when you say "reviving a old laptop" slapping a low end SSD into a core i5 laptop doesn't really come to mind. I figured you were gonna repair some parts, upgrade the RAM, clean it, etc. Also, PLEASE, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD! LOSE THOSE CRINGY THUMBNAILS!
@renardgrise

Meh... a cloned drive can run really slow... it really is best to start fresh. I can sympathize with not wanting to start from fresh though.
@IRNatman
@IRNatman 7 жыл бұрын
Zack Tyler I usually always start fresh, but when I'm upgrading/repairing someone elses computer I always clone. I don't wanna get blamed for losing anything (even though it's all there).. It's happened before.
@tomzoon4709
@tomzoon4709 7 жыл бұрын
If you don't want to get blamed for people losing anything, why not rather learn them more about decent storage/backup management? It's a worthwhile lesson and especially an easy subject to touch upon in these cases, people generally assume that at the point an actual drive crash might occur some of those files may be recoverable, while the worst should be assumed (as-in: nothing can be recovered). Dodging this important subject is anything-but a solution. Data-migration in any case is something where *many* things can go wrong, and the argumentation is very, very weak when you encounter a user with a drive that's been overburdened, you run the risk of cloning corrupted data or the user may assume data to be existing, while the file actually had been long gone missing. Not checking the destination for a succesfull copy is a mistake, but assuming the original doesn't contain any faults is a much larger one at that :) I'd never been too aware of such details, untill one day, nearly half a year after cloning an HDD to an SSD this user encountered corrupted jpegs. Ofcourse as always happens in such events, they would be important and/or family photos. It's only luck that this user had left their disk behind with me at that time and I never bothered to do anything with it at all up to this point. Without this disk this user still would have blamed me for corrupting his photo's. Bit-rot is very real and incredibly hard to notice. But the-more-so to prove that it hasn't happened by your means. I personally no longer accept any migrations from HDD to SSD where the end-user can not accept any form of unrecoverable data loss or expects those cases to be my responsibility. Otherwise, it's just too hairy for me.
@hellterminator
@hellterminator 7 жыл бұрын
+Zack Tyler I've never seen performance degradation after cloning a drive. I mean, how is that even supposed to happen? It doesn't make any sense.
@MattExzy
@MattExzy 7 жыл бұрын
I find cloning's pretty good enough for chumps like me. I have a 5yo HP laptop, where Windows took almost 5 minutes to completely load - now it's 22 seconds. Everything else is snappy, and I seriously wasn't going to waste time looking for drivers etc. Granted though, the hard drive that was being cloned was only about a year old itself and everything was clean, and all of my other files are backed up on multiple drives anyway. But, that's only what most reasonably logical people do - a lot of people just have *one* drive for everything, and if they lose stuff, they need to learn to not expect miracles.

Surely if you're going to revitalize old hardware, you could suggest switching to a lightweight linux-based operating system, like Lubuntu? Those run way better on older machines than Windows, and it's free...

Tbh, a 1st gen i5 dually is still plenty capable for a Windows machine anyway. Similar vintage laptop myself with an SSD, runs many rings around my work computers with quad i5s (Haswell) and HDDs. I would say if you only need the system for basic task like email, web browsing, KZfaq, etc.. to put Neverware's CloudReady version of ChromiumOS onto the machine, as it's even lighter weight, and runs on as little as 2GB of system ram. Don't get me wrong I love normal lightweight Linux distros like Mint XFCE, or Lubuntu, but sometimes keeping things simple on older hardware is a nice thing.

@nathansautodetail
@nathansautodetail 7 жыл бұрын
With an SSD install and a new install of Windows, it does wonders for laptops around that generation. If the RAM is less than 4GB, then upgrading that is going to help. 4, 6, or 8GB is good for general use these days, but 2GB or less and you're going to be maxing out the RAM a lot. The CPU is generally not modular, and if it is, then it would be difficult to find an upgrade that would work in the socket anyway. Reapplying thermal paste and cleaning out the dust would help if it's overheating, but it's not going to make it run quicker.

+LinusTechTips You guys listen to your community, and I'm grateful for that. So, here are a couple of suggestions. 1. Don't put vague, semi misleading titles in your videos. Weeks ago, "Revive your old laptop" would be "How to Install an SSD to Boost Performance" 2. This video falls under the same realm of the whole "How to install a Graphics Card" video you guys did way back. Useless for most of the subscribers since we're all PC Enthusiasts. If you need to have these basic hardware guides, I would suggest uploading one of these, then another more "Enthusiast" video later on in the day so people don't have any issues. Or, put a "Linus Tech Tips" spin on these videos, because honestly, stuff like how to install a graphics card are usually covered by your build guides anyway. 3. Make the Thumbnails less edited and with informational text like the Wan show is or the "Corsair 570x Tempered Glass Review". 4. I see you guys trying to adapt to a new and changing environment in KZfaq, and thats great, but we (the fans) like informative, useful videos that teach us new things with less "clickbait". Hope you guys see this.

my solution: Just skip these videos if you know it's not something you will need. I mean were you really looking to make your old laptop work like new again? It would seem you already have the skills to do that on your own so why even bother watching this?

I did the same upgrade from a 5400 rpm hard drive to a SSD. It was an amazing improvement for my ancient laptop. I also upgraded my laptop's memory from 3 GB to 4 GB because it originally shipped with Vista 32 bit and I found the mobile CPU could actually handle Windows 7 64 bit. Giving the 64 bit system more memory to work with seemed like a no-brainer.

Even though there's a lot of hate for this video I actually found it to be quite interesting, I got to see the power that an ssd upgrade can do for an old computer. Which I think is what they were initially intending for this video, but didn't come out properly. If they just changed the title and thumbnail to something like "Why an ssd can be is the most influential upgrade for an old laptop" or something like that and just change the thumbnail to something like a picture of that ocz vertex ssd then this video would be very good.

Yeah, I never got how people could replace their 500 GB or 1 TB HDD for an SSD in their laptop. Now there's plenty large SSDs available but how did people do it when even 256 GB SSDs were expensive? @rotor7726

Hendlton I managed to get away by stuffing a fat HDD in with my SSD - but as the SSD is considered the 'C:/' drive, I'm forced to constantly shift large quantities of junk off it and onto the data drive (case in point, Spotify, which gives no installation options and uses 10 gig of space - even with no downloaded music)

I've been doing similar upgrades to old laptops for friends and family. Generally speaking, it is best to install the maximum possible RAM (usually 8GB or 16GB for most laptops) and also put in an SSD. I've used Kingston, Sandisk and Samsung and they all work pretty well. One thing to look for is the transition from SATA-II (3GB/s) to SATA-III (6GB/s). Obviously, SATA-III will give you a better speed improvement. The other thing to consider is the type of CPU. Anything that does not have two CPU cores is probably not worth upgrading. Core2-Duo and any Intel i5/i7 are still worth upgrading. I also found that switching to a lightweight Linux Distro such as Lubuntu gave a big performance improvement. I have a HP5102 from 2010/11 which only had a single-core Ariel Atom CPU at 1.6GHz and only supported 2GB of RAM. With an SSD and Ubuntu installed, it would cold-start in 22 seconds flat. I did something similar for my mother's old computer (Toshiba with a Pentium Dual-Core @ 1.83Ghz) and installed Windows 10 and it works almost as good a new laptop!

Its hard for LTT, they have spent years now building a fanbase consisting of hardcore PC people and so now when they are trying to expand they are coming into conflict with their old content and core fanbase. That being said, there is room for these videos on LTT, but they have to be less "clickbaity". I don't know, I get that they want to expand and grow but they have made it hard for themselfs because they have started in a such a "deep" part of tech that going back to these kind of videos where selling titles misrepresenting of the content is going to piss people off.
