What’s your opinion of just splining with epoxy?

@Pocketfarmer1 9 times out of 10 I think it's best to leave wooden boats the way they were designed. There's no need to spline the seams of a carvel hull unless your planning on fiberglassing it.

Thank you. When I notified of this being available to watch via Facebook, I added the following message: This shows glassing the hull. Before you tell me how terrible a thing that is to do, I'll explain. I looked for a person who would be willing to row out to the mooring every day to pump out a beautiful original 90 year old caulked and painted wooden boat and to my surprise not one person volunteered. I am also not willing to do the daily chore, hence the fibreglass and epoxy.

@revivingjabiru7588 I'm obviously not advocating just leaving one in a derelict condition like you describe. I'm merely saying that it's not impossible to restore a wooden boat without resorting to fiberglass, and in my mind, that's the preferable path that retains the most historical value and character. I'm also not saying that glassing a wooden boat is always the wrong thing to do, and in your case, it's gonna work out just fine. You're a professional, and you know what you're doing. And that's great. But I've seen and heard of a lot of boats that people who don't know what they're doing have done a shoddy glass job on that end up in horrible shape in very short order.

@@revivingjabiru7588 I can understand why you’re feeling happier, with a good solid hull like that gives a great base for everything else, and she really does look solid:) In two weeks I’m back onto Susanna where I’ll make her watertight and float her down. I always have two of three months early summer of solid work and I just can’t find enthusiasm for working in dribs and drabs so I tend to leave things until I can work for a block of time. I can’t wait to get back to her in a couple of weeks! Looking forward to seeing where you go next on Jabaru too… Cheers!

Yes. It ends up six layers over the bottom of the keel and alsop at the stem and stern. Maybe even more by the time it's finished. Nice and strong.

I had heard that, but it's bit crowded in my tent and also there's a certain amount of laziness with rules.

Thanks for the comments. It is peel ply from the same supplier of glass and resin. I noticed today there is an area where the peel ply has been applied over some glass. Under the peel ply there are lumps and right next to it on the same piece of glass is smooth as it should be. No extra resin was applied. I'm getting better as I go along, but peel ply is still not to my liking.

Hi Mike, It is epoxy and the glass is 600 gsm triaxial. It's very easy cloth to work with. I only used peel ply at the end of each day so I could easily start again the next day and not have to wait for the full cure.

It's all about not wanting a leaky boat. Jabiru has been out of the water for more than ten years, so everything has shrunk. If I did a good enough job of caulking so she didn't leak at the launching, a few weeks later she would be bursting at the seams. If you look at #19, turning her over, you will see a shot from beneath and that shows the size of some of the seam gaps. It was easier to spline the hull and glass it. If she had stayed in the water, it might have been different.

Too many small holes in the hull for vacuum to be successful. I did think about it.
