Piston carbon was a little heavy but short rides or aftermarket exhaust without tuning will carbon it up a bit. You should always shove a rag in the crankcase unless you are planning on a total tear down.

The carbon was from the valve stem seals and valve guides being worn out and leaking. See this video for more info on that finding: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bsCVnLSi0Nupd6s.html

The reason for all that carbon and gunk. Is because the design of the breather on top rocker boxes i.e.(pcv valve.) The hoses are routed into the air box, and sucked into the intake. Terrible design, I believe Buell did it that way to pass emmision . What you need to do re-route those hoses into a catch can. At least that is what I did. Fixes the sputtering issue as well. You see how much oil and water comes out when I empty my catch can.

I just did this rebuild on a 883 Sportster with piston slap and everything that came out looks practically identical except for the combustion chamber being a bit more filled in on the Buell to get a higher compression ratio. We fit a 1200 conversion kit on the Sportie, any idea if it would fit an XB9?

Nice! There are a few differences and I had to ask my buddy who's more familiar w/ Harley/Buell to get this answer (so I'm not taking credit): "XD cylinders have notches for the oil squirters and in the fins for the throttle body"

@@kz6fittycent I did more research and learned that the xb9 actually uses the same bore as the 1200, but is destroked. I figured the xb9 was a deal like the 883 with a smaller bore. There are kits for the XB9 that punch the bore up even more to get to 1050cc, I bet that's a riot!

I can't catch the reason for disassembling the cylinder. What kind of breakdown happened?

I had both a head and base gasket leak on the rear cylinder. I intend to keep this bike "forever" and so I'm rebuilding it to keep it on the road as long as possible.

@@user-bp8oq7kg5w it wasn’t consuming oil at all. Those deposits are likely unburnt fuel from short engine runs throughout its life
