Revs Institute is pleased to announce the acquisition of a rare and exotic automobile: a 1929 Du Pont Model G four-passenger Speedster. This is a historically significant car and very few examples remain in existence.
The Du Pont Speedster epitomized the romance of the movies in the 1920s and was the darling of Hollywood film stars, New York socialites and Pittsburgh tycoons. It was one of the most desirable sports cars produced in the late 1920s.
In 1919, E. Paul duPont began his American motorcar venture by assembling the finest outsourced components available into luxurious and sophisticated cars. When Mary Pickford, popular silent movie star, bought an early two-seater for her dashing husband and famous swashbuckler, Douglas Fairbanks, the new marque's prestige was assured.
Now, all that was lacking was racing credibility. Du Pont entered a four-seat Speedster in the 1929 Le Mans 24-hour race and, though running a solid 8th overall, it was forced to retire with handling and transmission woes. Du Pont also entered a two-seat model of the Speedster for the 1930 Indy 500 race. A spin and crash on the 22nd lap of the Indy 500 race put an end to Du Pont’s racing ambitions. But, as intended, competition had made the Model G sporting news.
The donated Speedster is one of 15 built and only one of three still in existence. The car won its class at the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, in 2007, after having been beautifully restored.
Miles C. Collier, Founder of Revs Institute said: " This rare automobile is a significant donation to Revs Institute. We are most grateful to Mr. Thomas L. duPont for his generosity. This is an exciting addition to the displays at Revs Institute and will aid in our mission: to drive the recognition of the automobile as not only a great social change agent, but also one of the highest expressions of all that is great in the human mind and spirit."
As a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) educational organization, Revs Institute® welcomes donations of all kinds, to benefit its mission and collections. The 1929 Du Pont provides a significant addition to the displays at Revs Institute and compliments the Miles Collier Collections of exceptional, historical automobiles, currently housed at the museum.
Mr. Thomas L. duPont's very generous donation will be on view to the public beginning Thursday, April 7.
