Before you comment on hating the cops..remember there are some good ones out there and I was mainly ranting over the laws rather than the police themselves! I’m grateful for the cop that dealt with my car as he wasn’t too harsh and understanding.

Never truly understood the laws about modifying cars in Victoria. I'm not a cop hater, but what i've seen happen especially at track days/events, I would say I can see why people may dislike cops. Saw plenty of them defect cars leaving such events, even as far as to fine someone loading their car onto a trailer. Cops doon't use their discretion, rather than saying "oh I see you're trying to do the right thing and transport your car via a trailer rather than driving an unroadworthy car. I'll just give you a warning and let you know to please refrain from loading/unloading cars on a public street", they just fine people without question. Cops really have been killing their trust with the car community.

That statement you made is correct! Your exhaust can stick out as far as the towball would exceed. Your exhaust is legal

the wheels sticking out being illegal is because if another car sideswipes you they will get launched and flip over because of contact with the tyres and if a pedestrian gets hit by the wheel they could get sucked inside the wheel well and get mulched, its pretty rare but it does happen the exhaust sticking out being illegal is there just to piss people off though

I got a defect on my 63S I laughed so hard when at the pits to clear it the guy laughed so hard as well but what’s more funny is the cop that defected the 63S was there and came in to see the car get cleared and said to the cop that he is an idiot he tried to get me for the exhaust told him and showed him it’s stock from Mercedes with there logos and to not do it again He was so red faced walked out with his tail between his legs took of with the exhaust open and you can see he was burning

I really feel sorry for you aussies I live in New Zealand and the one time I've been stickered(defect same thing) I had a full straight pipe from the turbo on my 90 legacy gt it was probably 100db+ and I complained because I finally had to cert the car which im glad I have now. But that was at a high profile car meet at a checkpoint. I had another car with a straight pipe for years that never got picked up once even had a few pull overs with that exhaust and nothing, attitude test wins every time.

Vicpol bro, that’s what they do, Once you go through this process, you will realise that you can do plenty of other mods which won’t get you defected, it’s just painful, and won’t get you the looks. That canon muffler was never my cup of tea, so a cleaner look is best You could have coped another fine for the bypass valve too

Vic cops have really been out lately roaming the streets. Got fined for my fallen green P plate that had clearly unstuck itself from the rear glass at fkin 4am coming back from work.

I don't understand how having big, wider tyres can be illegal? but then the side mirrors are protruding more than anything. People accidentally bump into side mirrors all the time or some people side swipe things as they can't judge their vehicles properly when driving through tight spaces etc. Resulting in damage to their own vehicle or damage to other property. Rex is right with the cannon muffler and comparing it to a tow bar. People whack their shins on them more than anything, the muffler on Rex's chaser is not that far out, exhaust shops would properly mount it this far anyway so that way black soot isn't dirtying the bumper. Some laws in Australia can be debatable when it comes to getting defected. Some cops can be naïve with certain mods, some cops are good some are just plain strict as f*** cause " IT IZZ WHAO DIDEEEZZ''

Cops will target people driving nice/clean cars with any sort of aftermarket wheels (even stickers) then go break their back bending over backwards to pull them over and go top to bottom trying to find something to defect and then turn around and ask “why doesn’t anyone trust us? We’re just here to serve and protect?”. Like yes I would 1000% call them if I was in danger but I have absolutely 0 trust and feel totally unsafe, as a P plate driver, seeing any highway patrol cars while driving around. U honestly are still lucky to have such possibilities to get the car pretty fast back on the street again. In europe (mostly austria, germany) we have waaaay more troubles to do that. If we get defected we probably wait like 2 to 6 months on an appointment to get the car checked by an institute of the government. Good attitude Rex. We all know (rightly or wrongly) the modifications we love generally don't meet RWC standards. However, when speaking to vicpol, attitude always goes a long way. Bad attitude always leads to more fines, more to fix and longer off the road.... Being polite and courteous goes along way (even when we don't agree)...

I got defected as exhaust was to short needs to pass rear bar and they made me extend to length to what rex got defected for to pass 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Wa cops are pretty lenient on modified cars compared to other states but if you get a defect here it is full inspection regardless. It does happen but doesn't seem to be as much of a priority for them unless your car is really illegal

I've recently purchased a Nissan patrol in the past 3mths of owning it I've been defected twice for 35" tyres and 4" Springs. I've always had lowered performance and cars and never had a defect in 15yrs. There's so many cars getting around that are un-roadworthy but most cars getting defected are modified with performance parts.

Except if you hire a company like you want to upgrade something, that company can design it on paper and give their name to it so that it's going to be safe. + You need to visit some officials to ask them if you can do it and you need to handle all sorts of paperwork..... But you can modify your car however you want if you only drive it in an enclosed area. You can do whatever you want there. You don't even have to have papers for the car at all. But you can't drive it on the road.

Widen your fenders a bit and cut off the exhaust a bit. The reason the exhaust was unleagel was that someone walk behind the car or you back the car into someone they can cut their legg. Not that they have anything to do back there.

At least in new New Zealand you can get the modifications certified so it's legal

I also once had very little time to roady a major and made up a little cap to cover an external wastegate atmo exit on my Crown, un-plumed an cooler pipe and pulled out a tonne of fuel to have it idle (just), the shop tester must have thought 'Wow, what a heap of shit.... 1JZ?, pfft!'. 😅 I suppose if it happened to any other so called, 'Enthusiast'.. the vehicle would end up where it belongs, the tip. Can't complain !

lowering most cars doesn't make them safer. Lot of people do dodgy brakework too, that's why it needs to be engineered. Especially when bias can be affected. But yeah, I agree. Most of it is just to harass a hobby

Exhaust sticks out 3cm the cops call that illegal, as one cop said to me if a pedestrian walks behind your car he or she will trip over .......LOL.....I think the cop was tripping, as if someone would actually walk that close to your car. But having a tow bar that I have actually walked into that hangs out half a metre is legal........nothing logical in Australia.
