The FH70 155-millimeter howitzer has been used by NATO countries for over 40 years. The letters and number actually stand for Field Howitzer for the 1970s. Ukrainian forces first got their hands on them courtesy of Italy in May and received training in Estonia.

and when you look at it, ruSSia's GDP is similar to Italy's so your country alone can afford as much on armaments as ruSSia despite their size, so explains why they are doing so badly. Although per capita ruSSia's GDP is one third of your country, shame really if it hadn't been run by crooks for 30 years and hadn't wasted so much money on illegal wars they would all have wonderful lives like Italians.

After a while, we managed to get below the limit (I don't remember the specific time, it's 20 years ago), running around like mad men. And it sure is some force. The largest gun powder charge we used (called 7 red in my country) was a little under a meter long and about 15 cm in diameter. It's for fully elevated firing. When you fire a charge like that.. My fathers US Army guns in WW2 were the M2 155 long Tom. These were still in service during Vietnam. Despite an elevation of up to 65 degrees they were not classed as howitzers. Their ancestor was the French GPF 155 of WW1. In N.Africa they were attached to the British and Free French forces at different times. They were extremely accurate out to almost 15 miles. In one incident at 12 miles a German ammo train was struck and set on fire by the first ranging shot. They were a towed piece and looked similar to these but had 4 wheels. It had a 12 man crew and its rate of fire was faster than the modern mechanized guns. At a unit reunion at Ft. Bragg they were given a tour and the current artillery commander was amazed at the rate of fire they achieved. They had a lot of practice from N.Africa to Germany.Their drone was a Piper Cub spotter plane. Shoot and Scoot still works.

NATO & the EU need to add Ukraine to their communities as fast as possible. The Eastern wing of NATO would be such a strong bastion of deterrence. In the first Gulf war Iraq was equipped with Russian equipment and Bagdad had the densest Russian made air defence network in the world apart from the one around Moscow. I spent my military service in Italy in an artillery regiment which used FH-70. These howitzer, in the last part of their long millitary life, finally saw a real combat use on the first line. They're based on an outdated concpet, but they're still effective. By the way, a 43 kg grenade that explodes not far from you, is still a bad thing...

@@atlas42185 Towed howitzers are outdated. The latest concept is the AGM (Artillery Gun Module) mounted on a Boxer chassis. The operation of the gun is fully automated (total crew of two: A driver and a gunner) who never have to touch a shell and the Boxer/AGM combo can deploy, fire eight 155mm shells and move away all in 90 seconds. On road it has a top speed of 103km/h (65mph).

@@atlas42185 outdated concept about strategic issues (field artillery) when in this era we see missiles and self-propelled artillery and drones with the ability to auto set up and fire. An FH-70 needs about 15-30 mins to be set up and ready to fire. It was already a bit outdated in 1997/98 when I served in the Italian Army and, except drones, other kinds of artillery were already in camp and GPS was in use. But even if it was built in 1970 and its projects started in the last years of 60s, it was dotated of a lot of features that can be useful also today like the APU, the ability to fire in the two arcs (less than 45° and more than 45°, so it could fire like a tank cannon or a mortar) and the capacity to fire normal grenades and semi-auto propelled grenades that extends the maximum range from 24 to 32 kms.

The observing units , dependent on the target, probably will ask for one single shell (all weather/wind - distance, altitudes are taken into it by the fire control command) - after thagt single shell hit, they may ask for slight corrections - and the next full round (mostly at least 2 to 4 guns) will deploy the present around a certain variance, which may between 5 to 30m, depending on distance (and accuracy of the gunners ) . Good teams will almost hit at the first shelling… and sometimes the more area the better, depending on the type of shell used… (different fuzes …) 🧨
