It might not mean anything, they could be just using that as a comparison. Or maybe at the beginning, before Link is sucked up by the rift, you play as him. Kinda like TotK, you play some of the beginning story.

I mean the reveal trailer literally opens with Link fighting with a sword.

Problably It's Only The intro. The description says Zelda journey is about save Link, so he not playble in the main adventure

The opening sequence has you play as Link.

It does show Link quite prominently on the box art as well, so this wouldn't surprise me at all

Hey RGT I just wanted to say I've lost a lot of friends to drugs and suicide and other things including cancer so I know how it feels man

I love the DIY ethic for working on one's own toys and tools - whether it's cars, electronics,, skateboards, snowboards, or musical instruments. The ability to work on one's own vehicle is especially awesome. I personally have only gotten to the point of doing some very basic maintenance on my car - the only thing holding me back from doing more for it and is having limited time and energy due to work. It's so much better to have my own hands under the hood instead of someone I'm paying to do it.

You can’t have a Zelda game without link gameplay, but you can have a Zelda game with no direct Zelda play. Zelda is an added bonus, but I don’t think it’s ever gonna replace link, regardless in the lore, he’s needed.

Echoes Of Wisdom's Direct trailer: Clearly, without any doubt, shows Link to be playable during the game's intro. Some people online including this guy, but only after seeing the ESRB rating for the game: "Wow, Link is playable? Why did Nintendo hide this??? LEAK OF THE CENTURY!" Anyway, going by the trailer, it doesn't seem like Link would be playable or even conscience inside the rifts, though it isn't beyond Nintendo to hide something like that from us.

I think you play as Link in the intro, then you switch to Zelda for the rest of the game. That's the impression I got from the trailer, and this rating description solidifies that to me. I'm sure boss battles will be as Zelda with her gameplay.

It makes sense, they have done the light world/dark world thing a few times in these games. Especially since this game seems to be in the link to the past Hyrule, it could be a similar mechanic where what’s done in the dark effects the light.

Before I even watch this, I was thinking it would be cool to have a dark world we’re you play as link and switching back and forth to solve puzzles etc

My initial thought is just playing as Link in the intro. But, it could be a back and forth thing, which would be cool. Or it could be along the lines of "As Link you have a sword and bow, but as Zelda..." kind of situation, more comparing the playstyle to previous entries.

Misunderstanding is what I'm getting from this. It's just explaining the difference in fighting style between Link and Zelda so people don't go into the game thinking it's in the traditional LOZ style.

Switching back and forth between Link and Zelda was actually how I thought this game was going to be at first until seeing only Zelda throughout the trailer during gameplay. So if it does turn out to be that way it will be really interesting, I'd like it.

It could also mean that the very beginning of this game you play through a dungeon as link and then you play as Zelda after you finish the dungeon, and you see the event shown in the trailer

I kind of got the impression that you'd play as Link for at least the beginning, kind of like how in the beginning of TotK Zelda is there with you. It's mostly just cut scenes, but you do get to play a little bit. Then for the rest of the game you're on your own.

On hindsight we should have known based on the game art shown in the Nintendo Direct. There's link with a sword ready to battle. No point of him being there armed and ready if he just disappeared for good or was waiting to be saved by Zelda.

I wonder if this will be similar to LoZ: Spirit Tracks, when you played as Zelda when her spirit inhabited the suits of armor.

From the trailer I assumed we played as Link at the beginning, in a boss style battle against Gannon, then progresses onto playing as Zelda for the remainder of the game.

Feels like this is the sequel to Link Between Worlds, spiritually. Super excited!

it'd be very cool if the zelda side had this unique open gameplay and the link side had a traditional dungeon/linear focused gameplay

I like that idea - while you're above ground with Zelda, Link in that dark dimension fighting and maybe it can be a kind of thing like an area that's blocked because of something with a rift, gets fixed when he does something allowing Zelda to pass an area that's blocked.

Honestly, with Tears of the Kingdom’s FIRST TRAILER being all we had to go on FOR YEARS, I thought a MAJOR TWIST for that game was going to be that there would be “sections” where we would control Zelda.

I've got a hunch, you wont play as link for long or often. They said sword/bow limiting equipment... makes me think limiting time.

But on a serious note, technically the original Zelda games were linear, the very first literally had the dungeons numbered.. but the world was open, and you could pretty much do most of them in any order. For the SNES yes you had to get the three pendants first before you could get the master sword then do the dark world dungeons, and yes they suggested an order to get those pendants, but you didn't really need to follow that order, and you could do most of the dark world dungeons out of 'order ' as well

It could also just be that you open the game as him and then once fallen into the rift you swap to Zelda; not saying there aren’t rift sequences but it could be rated like that for him just for his part at the beginning; maybe the end as well.

I'm sorry for your loss. I read the Link statement as a comparison that in other Link games, you shoot arrows but in this game Zelda has X abilities.

You know it would be kind of crazy if they made this one of those 2 part games similar to Oracles. One where you played as Link defeating the 8 dungeons and getting the Master Sword and then part 2 where Zelda rescues Link and your progress from part 1 carries over and you defeat Ganon for good as Link with however many hearts you had and stuff like that. I know they aren’t doing that but man that would be awesome! I would definitely buy both lol

The ESRB description reads like they MEANT to say, traditionally, Link fights enemies with a sword and bow and arrow. In this game, Zelda… etc.

Pretty sure you won't play as link. They are just explaining the difference of mechanics in this game

@rgt 85 so did you consider when the esrb rating said you play as Link, that it meant you would play as Link in the beginning of the game in the opening sequence only?

Maybe you start out as Zeldq buy then at certain points you will take control of link to help zelda solve puzzles and help clear the way forward for Zelda and vice versa.

Maybe it will be almost GTA5 like, in that with a hit of a button you can swap between Zelda and Link and wherever they are in their different locations across their different planes of existence. That could be amazing.

i think i knew right after i was done watching the trailer during the direct that you will be able to play as link but like in the trailer i think you’ll be able to play as link at the very beginning of the game and then after that little boss fight in the trailer that’s when the game switches up on you and goes straight to zelda gameplay and now zelda’s gotta save link

In these rifts you could play as Link and fight previous bosses like ALTtP... Phantom Gannons from OOT... bosses that all you need is a bow and sword... but I guess we'll see

"Nobody thought of this." Well, I certainly did. My theory, as well as what I think would be the ideal way to start the game, is that the game opens with you playing as Link. There is a short dungeon crawl, followed by a quick, easy fight against Ganon. After a cutscene following his defeat, you then switch over to Zelda. Naturally I have no evidence for this other than what we've seen in the trailer, but it makes the most sense. There could even be sections where you switch between the two, working together, like in Spirit Tracks.

My guess is, you play as Link early in the game, and then at the end of the game, after Zelda rescues Link. I may be wrong, but isn't Ganon/Ganondorf supposed to be defeated by only Link?

I figured Link would be somewhat playable. It was giving me Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart vibes from the trailer.

I think RGT85 hit the nail on the head. It could also be a second story mode where you play as Link in the traditional style after finishing Zelda's mode. This seems to be running on the same engine as the Link's Awakening remake. They might as well use what's already been developed to extend the gameplay.

it could be just for the opening sequence, but I'd say if they've put the time in to make link work, he'll be in the rifts as well. that way they've got the best of both worlds, something new and something more traditional , so they dont alienate a certain portion of their fan base

You will probably play as link in the opening seconds of the game. I don't think the Ganon fight in the start of the game is just going to be one big cutscene but instead the tutorial.

Maybe Zelda can throw important items into rift for Link to use so they can help each other to progress.

Well it looks like you start out as Link and do that battle with Ganon. But it would be cool if they team up at some point. Maybe he's trapped in the rift and only she can move between worlds, but he gets to help her with bosses in the rift.

I mean yeah you see you are Link at the beginning of the trailer doing the usual fight against Ganon in a dungeon. It's possible you can play as Link in the other world he has fallen into but I think the game is majority you playing as Zelda. There was fan speculation from the TOTK trailers when Link and Zelda are separated, that Link would do his thing on the surface and we would occasionally control Zelda in the underworld she fell into... maybe they took inspiration from that, but reversed character situations around for this game.

I just want the oracle games in this style already.

I like the Ocarina style... it's linear but honestly not that linear. You need the bow but you can kind of slip to water or fire afterward. Technically didn't need either to do the Shadow dungeon... but need a lot of things to do the Sand dungeon. So if you replay the game you can do things in different orders... there's mild exploration in the world between all the dungeons and it feels like there's a balance.

Maybe Zelda is up in hyrule dispelling rifts to open up dungeons wherever link got sent. Once you unlock them, you get access to the traditional dungeon with bosses.
