I think it's to demonstrate the strangeness of their dynamic. Daemon defers to Rhaenyra often, but that is likely because she is the Heir to the Throne. When the argue or disagree, it is in places where others cannot hear. Alicent does it because Viserys lets her, but he shouldn't and there is a key difference. The fact that Alicent said all of this in a *hallway* is *not* an accident on the part of the filmmakers. She's undercutting the king within earshot of servants. Even in more "equal" royal couples were queens had a lot of say, it was often done behind closed doors and out of earshot. Good queens don't openly undercut their King where anyone can hear, much less where *dozens* can hear. If Aemma had been in the same place, she never would have said something like that in front of a room full of people. She'd have said it privately and only to Viserys, even if she had been so direct. The fact that Alicent (1) feels like she can do this (2) doesn't care about Viserys reputation inside the palace (3) cannot see the strategic advantage of this situation (4) Viserys has allowed her to get to a place where she can say something openly defiant in front of that many people

I believe it was Maegor’s holdfast. The Blacks knew this and two of them, whether it was with consent or order from Rhaenyra or not I’m not sure, climbed the tower and ambushed Alicent. They then waited for Halaena to arrive with the children and took them all captive. They then asked Halaena which of the two boys she would like to die - the eldest boy or the younger one. She chose the younger one, but they still beheaded the eldest Jahaerys. Halaena who was always a bit more sensitive to dragon dreams, went mad and killed herself. This incident would spark a riot that would see the Targaryens lose almost all the dragons they had. And Alicents other children all died as well. Aegon was suspiciously killed. Aemond died fighting Daemon. Her third son died too - his tent burnt around him. All she had left was her granddaughter Jahaera, who even after everything and Rhaenyra’s son was king, told her to slit his throat after she reluctantly had to let her marry him to finally bring peace. A decision that was placed before her many years ago that could’ve avoided EVERYTHING. She died alone and hated the colour green.

The show portrays her more kindly than the books that she was goaded by her father into a feud. And some of her children were certainly innocent of their fates. Helaena for one. And the babies. They didn’t deserve their fate any more than Rhaegar’s children or Elia Martell.

Helaena and Aegon’s son is Jaehaerys and he is beheaded after Lucerys’ death as an act of revenge. Daemon and Mysaria hire two assassins called Blood and Cheese to bound and gag Alicent and they forced Helaena to choose between her two sons and one of them got beheaded in front of both Alicent and Helaena. There’s a whole chapter in Fire and Blood dedicated to both Lucerys’ and Jaehaerys’ deaths.

The Hightowers didn't lost. They emerge from the war as the undisputed richest house on the continent, Aegon's legitimacy over Rhaenyra was recognized by all, their army is not destroyed, their city is intact, and they are the only ones who will indirectly benefit economically from the war. The lineage of the Blacks survives, but having lost what made them powerful, having recognized their adversary as the legitimate king, and now totally dependent on their vassals, who will eventually overthrow them.

Nope. If this were idyllic, the twins would've been betrothed to Alicent's sons. This bonds them all, Velaryon's included. Had this been the case Luke would not be heir to Driftmark as Rhaenys didn't want him to have it in the first place. By the finale you see Corlys wanted no parts of them, either. The Bastard stigma is strong and the possibility of betrothing their legitimate grandchildren to nobility would have Corlys doing an about face in five seconds. This also gives the Hightower's access to Driftmark if Baela were made heir. And honestly the only reason I truly believe that Daemon was cool with the twins betrothal is because it would've made Baela Queen. Without that guarantee they would not have been betrothed.

Viserys never loved alicent so no I don't think there's any convincing him of anything. He does not care about her, he does not care about their children either. His favorite has always been Rhaenyra who he had with his cousin. When Alicent was a teenager she was bathing his old decrepit self even as queen, spoke sweetly to him, and cared for him even now when he has countless hand maidens to do that. She's being driven mad because no one can or will say what everyone already knows. In my opinion she needed to Cersei up a long time ago and play dirty.

To remind that Rhaenyra is a woman. Many people even today think that women cannot be in leadership positions because they menstruate, have children, and have duties men cannot perform like pregnancy and lactation. Also this show is emulating medieval times and back then royal and noble women did not breastfeed their children, they had wet nurses. Breastfeeding was seen as beneath their status, for her to lactate through her dress would have been extremely embarrassing in any situation. Rhaenyra is to be the next ruler and the only reason some oppose her succession is her gender. That moment being in an important meeting and lactating, was just a reminder that she is not only a woman, but a mother. Most people in that council think that her place is by her children and not ruling, her lactating was just evidence for them that they are right.

His legitimacy doesn't matter at all his accepted as rhaenyras heir by both the velaryons and viserys, the only people who seem to take issue are the hightowers and that's only for there own personal gain. If Heleana married Jace she would’ve likely been used as a political hostage to keep the greens in line. Jace’s claim would have been challenged eventually by Aegon II’s children and/or Daemon and his sons. So she would be in a lot more danger if she married Jace.

Alicent isn't half as evil as she should have been in my opinion. But Rhaenyra is selfish, crass, rude, and irresponsible. She's not fit to rule a goat let alone an entire kingdom.

Its not about feelings, it's about strategy. In medieval times, marriages were 99% of the time not based out of love amongs the nobility specially. It was about strategic plan, security, money, lands etc. In this case Helaena marrying Jace means bringing the two forming rival factions of the Royal family back together. Helaena is the only woman available for marriage on the Green side and Jace is the oldest male and heir on the black side.

Most of this is wrong. (Spoilers ahead though.) 1) If Alicent expect a succession conflict, as of this scene she has to expect to start it from an very weak position. Remember, at this point she has only one young dragon in her faction while the Blacks have half a dozen, _and_ her father has gotten kicked out of court to be replaced with a Black-aligned Hand. Her only real asset is Viserys's affection. As such, securing a real familial link to the most likely victors seems like it would be worth it... unless Alicent is not concerned about anyone's safety but merely about her and her family's personal power at the expense of everything else. 2) Jace being a bastard is a nothing burger. Not a single lord, knight or peasant in the entire chronicles of the Dance of the Dragons expresses any opinion about it, at all, at any point; they all picked their side based on what they could gain from it. The people of Westeros are much more concerned about improving their own lives than about the phenotype of the guy on the spiky chair that most of them will never even see in their lives. As it is, even when the Greens started the war in a stronger position (as opposed to here where they are still the weaker faction), the Blacks ended up with more support than the Greens, regardless of any claims of bastardy. In fact Jacaerys himself was the one who personally secured most of this support, showcasing his suitability for kingship. 3) Daemon is not in the picture. At this point in the story Rhaenyra hasn't seen him in years, and there is no way Alicent could expect them to ever marry. Heck, she can't even be expecting Laenor to die any time soon. As far as she knows the Velaryon boys are the only ones in play.

Not really this wouldn't solve anything. Aegon, Aemond and Daeron would still have stronger claims to the throne and would be in mortal danger if Rhaenyra became queen. Even if Rhaenyra would be unwilling to kill them( which is dubious), Daemon certainly would. This was not a good match and would only give Rhaenyra a hostage to use Alicent and it was an atempt for Rhaenyra to cover up for her mistakes and try to add some semblance of legitimacy to Jace's claim. It was match that only benefited Rhaenyra at the expense of Alicent.

It doesn't matter how much Targaryen they have in them. Alicents children are legitimate, rhaenyras are not. Rhaenys' mother is baratheon. In the book she has black hair, not white. She's very much a Targaryen regardless and she's also legitimate.

Even without this Jace is a bastard and bastards are not legally allowed to inherit his claim is inevitably going to be challenged, either by Aegon, Aemond, and Daeron or their kids, or possible future legitimate kids by Rheanyra. Or even just other lords who don’t want a bastard on the iron throne. So it would not have even stopped the war just delayed it anything at all. At the point of this offer they are two separate factions despite being under Viserys. It is a very bad match for team green that puts Heleana in a lot of danger.

The real threat was aegon and his brothers for they would have more legitimacy thanks to the laws of inheritance and not being bastards. 3. people in westeros care a lot for blood and legitimacy and they are not thrilled with having a woman as heir to begin with, so piting kids that are obviouly bastards just makes it worse. 4. the hightowers are a line of at least 10k years the offer of rhaenyra was basically and insult due to her offering a bastard.
