I read so many of your comments, and the theme this last Holiday Season was to review Christopher Lee singing Christmas songs with a heavy metal band. So. . . I looked into it more, and found this Rhapsody of Fire with Christopher Lee (aka Count Dokuu from Star Wars and Sarumon from Lord of the Rings) and decided, "The Magic of the Wizard's Dream"? That is SO ME!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Rhapsody of Fire featuring Christopher Lee for the first time, performing "The Magic of the Wizard's Dream".

Christopher Lee will always be a legend. A phenomenal actor that appeared in over 200 movies; he could speak like 7 languages; was an intelligence officer for Britain's special forces in WW2; was basically knighted; he actually met Tolkien; was a metalhead plus an opera singer for over a decade, the list just goes on. RIP you absolutely amazing person.

He was Dracula more than anyone else, has more film credits than anyone else, one of the most memorable bond villains, was lucifer, death, Saruman and actually met Tolkien, he also read LOTR all the time long before he was asked to be in the films, when asked by Peter Jackman to imagine what it feels like and sounds like to be stabbed in the back he told him he didn't need to imagine it, could speak 5 languages fluently and 4 conversationally, played Sherlock and Mycroft, served during WW2, and he is the ultimate gentleman and legend that will likely never be bested.

Fun facts: Christopher Lee very nearly trained as an opera singer when a professional heard him singing in the 1950s, but he had neither the money nor time to pursue the training; he also met J.R.R. Tolkien personally and got Tolkien's approval to play Gandalf, so imagine the performance we might have gotten! Also, you should really check out the albums he did to honor his ancestor, Charlemagne!

@@sovereigndayyouthkafir3943 well, I will need a direct quote by Lee tbh; because every single time I read that, the original source is an interview of Lee where he says both things (his desire to play Gandalf, and his "meeting" with Tolkien), but they were and have always been shown as completely separate anecdotes! And it wouldn't make sense for Tolkien to say that, considering his vision of film adaptation. When they met, Lee was still young, at the very beginning of his career and not famous yet (it was even before he incarnated Dracula, as far as I remember the date). I certainly don't see Tolkien telling a random young man, no matter his talent and enthusiasm: "you'd be perfect to play an immortal divine entity looking like an old man".
@Turuk4no
@Turuk4no Жыл бұрын
@@sovereigndayyouthkafir3943 Sorry, misread your first sentence! Yeah, I never found any source - neither Lee nor Tolkien, nor any agent / publisher / anybody - saying that. I just watched the video you mentioned, going to the part where he talks about that; and as he said in the video, it's a rumour. I think, if it were the case, Lee would have at least mentioned exchanging letters when journalists ask him about Tolkien, but he only ever mention that one meeting decades ago. Or, said letters would have made their way into the "Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien book, considering their direct link to the Lord of the Rings; but there is no mention of Lee or any such benediction in any letter. For me, it's nothing more than urban legend!

Just to give you an idea how badass Sir Christopher Lee was: he did the voice-acting for the evil king Haggard in ''The Last Unicorn'' animated movie, but not just the english version. He also did it for the German dubbed version, he basically told the producers: "I'm fluent in German and I'm already in the recording studio, I can do the German version right away too if you like..."

Fabio is one of the most incredible voices in metal. He is versatile, almost a tenor, interspersing guttural voices and clean voices that go from one end of his vocal range to the other. @bluebehir

I think for guttural you can't go past "Agony Is My Name" I think for epic-ness, "Gargoyles, Angels of Darkness" easily my favourite. I would have recommended "Lamento Eroico" or "Wings Of Destiny" as intro song, because it creates the greatest contrast later on. Wings has the same "fluffiness" (airated soft headvoice) But there are so many great choices, "Unholy Warcry", "wisdom Of the Kings", "Emerald Sword" or maybe something like "Nightfall on the Grey Mountain"

Finally some Fabio Lione! I knew this moment would come. Many people hate him, but he is such a versatile singer. "Lamento Eroico" is one of his best performances, but it's full of good stuff. A couple of examples: "Warrior of Ice", the first part of "Symphony of Enchanted Lands", "Erian's Mystical Rhymes", the middle part of "Sacred Power of Raging Winds" where it seems he is acting... Otherwise, for something totally different there are "When Demons Awake" or "Reign of Terror", where he shows some harsh vocals.

If I remember correctly Christopher Lee was overheard whilst singing by an Opera singer when he was on holiday with friends and the Opera Singer offered to mentor Christopher. (I admit my source could be wrong). Edit: Ahh, here we go. Telling a story of traveling to Stockholm, Sweden, Lee revealed that opera legend Jussi Bjorling had once told him how he clearly possesses the talent and could easily become a top-class opera singer one day. He sadly lacked the funds/funding to stay in Sweden to study with Jussi.

After this, Luca started the project "Luca Turilli's Rhapsody" with a new singer (Alessandro Conti). Those songs are INSANE vocally. Songs "Ascending To Infinity" and "Anahata" are ultra difficult to sing from a more contemporary side and "Tormento E Passione" (has a 14 second tenor high C), "Luna", "Notturno" and "Il Tempo Degli Dei" are more focused on the opera side of vocals but all of it is vocally absolutely incredible. You should definitely see some of these songs

I love that you say classical music and metal are meant to go together. I never really understood people that say it is a crossover of completely different or opposite genres, even if they say it somehow works. For me it always made sense. Obviously there is contrast, but contrast does not mean something does not belong together. When done right classical music and metal fuse so perfectly, that you would not even think of it as a two genres meeting, but as music that was always meant to be this way.

I am so glad that you are finally reacting to Rhapsody - they deserve the recognition! This band is one of the best things to happen to metal in the last 25 years, and in my opinion Fabio is the greatest metal singer alive. Rhapsody are arguably the godfathers of symphonic power metal, also mixing in classical, baroque, folk music, progressive metal, and what not. Luca Turilli, their guitar player, lyricist, composer, and overall ideologist, is an absolute genius - you should check his solo work too.

The voice at the end is just another layer of Fabio's opera singing voice. You should check out more of him, he has SUCH a powerful voice and is extremely versatile (he can literally go from opera to growls). If you like Symphonic Power Metal, you can also try Luca Turilli's Rhapsody with Alessandro Conti has the main singer. Mr. Turilli was Rhapsody of Fire's guitarist, so you can imagine that Alessandro's voice must be pretty special if Luca traded Fabio for him ;) They're both very good in their own way and they even made an album together (Lione/Conti) which is ok but nothing spectacular. Thank you for paying more attention to Fabio he definitely deserves it! You'll find MANY interesting songs by him :)

@@sarahnadeofpoetry The first person to leave the line-up was Luca because he wanted to play in a solo project (Luca Turilli's Rhapsody, only 2 albums but Ascending to Infinity is my favorite album of all time) with his own style, so it was a friendly breakup. Fabio did 2 more albums with Rhapsody of FIre but then decided to leave and instead to join Luca in ANOTHER project called Truilli/Lione Rhapsody. It's different, modern and very rich. Rhapsody of Fire is still an active band with new members and they're great, but from my personal opinion I prefer Luca Turilli's compositions.

1. Because of Sir Christopher's pronunciation / accents during the solo parts, this deep voice reminds me more of patriotic songs from the first half of the XX century (at least the ones in my country had similar feel to them). 2. The parts where they sing together sound as if they could be in a movie, singing on the other sides of the world, looking at the same night sky.

Lee appeared as a narrator and character within the story on multiple Rhapsody albums and it gave him the spark to work with other metal bands and eventually he released a metal album of his own. P.s. you cant simply sing power metal without using your hands.

I also have the "limited edition" CD for "The Magic of the Wizard's Dream" with 6 versions of THIS song on it... 4 of them with Christopher Lee as they sang it in English, German, Italian, and French. Then an Orchestral version and the album version from the album "Symphony of Enchanted Lands, Vol. 2 The Dark Secret." I bought like 8 CD's back in the day though I haven't kept up with anything recent sadly. I still LOVE their music though and you should totally find the German, Italian, and French versions just to listen to on your own!
