Story of Dalton Gang passed down thru my moms side of the family. The daltons were riding by my great great grandparents farm and stopped and asked if they could spend the night in the barn.Gggpa said ok and Gggma brought them inside their house and feed them. They said they were very nice boys very polite even did some work to payback. The next morning gggpa went out to get them for breakfast and they were gone. Later when heard about bank robbery and saw pictures of the boys and they had same first names that’s when they realized who had spent the night at their house. Asked if sorry or scared now they had let them stay said no were very nice boys.

Very interesting story! I came here from The Eagles album Desperato. My husband and I watched a show on VH1 many years ago about this story. I have searched for this for awhile. I’m so excited to find this! On the album, the members of the band are laying on the ground like the dead outlaws!

You're right. They were re-enacting the Dalton Gang being shot and rounded up in Coffeeville. That who album is a great one. They drew their inspiration for the songs from these outlaws as well as Bill Doolin. He was a part of the Dalton Gang but missed out on this fateful raid because of a lame horse. Although it has been said that Doolin didn't like the raid and had a bad feeling about what was going to happen. Either way he started his own gang which so happened to have a surviving Dalton brother who was also not in that raid. I have done a story on Bill Doolin if you are interested. As an Eagles fan I'm sure you're more than familiar with the song "Doolin-Dalton." In the future I will also have more on the Doolins. I think the Eagles enjoyed this time period a lot and it really shined thru in their music. Thank you for watching and welcome to the channel!

Wow! Excellent video and History lesson! I've never heard of the Dalton Gang so this was fascinating!!! Enjoyed seeing all the plaques and markers... and the outlines of where the three outlaws fell were really cool! Oh, and I got the biggest kick out of the headline on the first newspaper article/report you showed, which boldly stated "EXTERMINATED. The Dalton Gang Wiped Off the Face of the Earth." That's good stuff!!! Fantastic job, Rhetty. Enjoyed this one a lot!!! Take care, Valerie.

They were a big time gang in this area. The Daltons were cousins of the Younger gang. The Daltons, Younger and James are all sort of related in some way. Also I'm not sure if you have ever heard of The Eagles or not but they have a song about the Dalton-Doolin gang. Their whole Desperado album was influenced by the Dalton gang and the Doolin Gang. This town does an excellent job at embracing their history and keeping it going for all to know. Wish they all did that. Thank you for watching!

Greetings from Scranton, PA. I hauled propane to the refinery there in Coffeyville from time to time with that truck in my pic. I heard many years ago that there was a museum there but of course I never had the time or a place to park a big truck. I like the details the people of the town pointed out especially the body outlines in Death Alley. The gang members will never rest in peace with the ground vibrating from the passing trains. It’s the railroad’s way of saying “we won”. 😁
@RhettyforHistory
@RhettyforHistory 4 жыл бұрын
You're probably right on the trains. I could see why you never stopped with the truck. There's really no place at all for those anywhere near. They do have a museum there in town. It just moved by the Condon bank. Better area for it. I don't even think they have it all set up yet. I wanted to go in there but I spent too much time in the cemetery. I got there 15 minutes to late. Thank you for watching from PA!

RhettyforFun, I thought my dad had said that. When you were in the bank & showing all the things in it related to the shootout, there was this wooden piece that is the front of the bank & info about it on the back; I have that in my curio cabinet. It was one of many different collectibles my dad had. He passed in 10/1999 & I have other wooden pieces of historic buildings, like the Rainbow Row houses in Charleston, SC.; & I took it to remember my dad & pass it on to his grandchildren & now great-grandchildren. A quick side note, my children are related to both Thomas Jefferson & Jessie James via their father’s side of the family.

The list of historical members of the Parker family goes way back, in 1775 Captain John Parker was killed on the harassing British retreat from Concord. Hanging Judge Isaac Parker, Robert Leroy Parker aka: Butch Cassidy and Cynthia Ann Parker just to name a few. I currently have 40+ family bibles in this and connected by marriage families. These go back to 1658, the 1779 bible from the Thompson Branch tells of General George Washington visiting while on a march. Well that's a small part of our large American family.

Rhetty, I'm glad to see that they moved the museum to the new location. The people who ran the previous place were great folks. An interesting piece of the story to me was that the Daltons all put on fake beards which looked fake with the hooks behind the ears like the eyeglasses used. They looked very shoddy and it wound up drawing attention to them and didn't fool anyone. They realized it was the Daltons and someone looked into the bank and saw it was being robbed. He went to Isham's and they handed out rifles and ammo to whoever could shoot because the banks were not insured in those days. If the money was stolen, there was no replacement. Bob Dalton murdered the teller at the bank vault door where you were standing as he would not give up the money. He was the first casualty in the town and died a hero. Great video!

Thank you so much for watching and telling more of the story. Yes their disguising was a joke. They had many mistakes in this whole plan. My great grandfather was more of a religious man, he was born around 1910 or so. It's been so long I dont remember the date exactly, off the top of my head. They were older relatives of his. His wife was born in 1913-ish. She was a very devout Christian woman. I miss her very much.

Those are quite the relatives you have. The oldest brother Frank is buried in Coffeyville. He was the U.S. Marshal. The only Dalton to survive the raid was Emmett. He moved to California but is buried in Oklahoma. Bill Dalton teamed up with Bill Doolin and created the Wild Bunch Gang. Bill Dalton was killed in Ardmore, Oklahoma but is buried in California in an unmarked grave. Thank you for watching and sharing.

@@RhettyforHistory Yes, if I remember correctly it was his wife that had his body shipped back to what is now Oklahoma for burial. Alot of the Daltons are buried in the East Texas region. From Hunt County to Van Zandt county area. Unfortunately the good ones that were a staple in the family are gone, and we no longer have reunions like we once did. But thank you for making this video.

Howdy Rhett, I love your posts. It is my understanding that the defender Charles Connelly was either the town marshal or a deputy of sorts and was shot by Grat Dalton. I come from Fresno County California, where the Daltons used to race horses in what is now the town of Clovis CA. In the foothills of the Sierras is DALTON Mountain, named for Grat Dalton. One of the Dalton brothers was a state representative in the state assembly. The Daltons held up a few trains in the Central valley shortly before heading East to pull the Coffeville raid.

Hi what's was the name of the music at the beginning.was it out of a TV show. Good that one of the banks survived. The town has certainly done a excellent job of preserving the story of the Dalton gang. Was any of them married with children. Cheers from Australia Day 2 of our 6 weeks lockdown. 🇦🇺🐨❤️❤️❤️❤️👍🏼

The music is a generic piece from a website called Epidemic. It's not from a TV show but it sounds like it could be. But you're right about this town doing an excellent job at preservation. They are proud of their history. It really sounds super strict where you are. It must be really bad! I'm not exactly sure if they had offspring or wives. That is something not talked about much so it would require more research.

I really like the old photo at around 5:39 because it shows the perfect line of fire the defenders had shooting from the hardware store down the alley with the staircase Grat Dalton hid behind on the left. but unfortunately about 20 feet behind where the Sheriff came into the alley not knowing Dalton was behind him and he was killed.

Real good video. The Daltons were over confident and not too smart. Leaving their horses so far away in an alley that ended up being a straight shot, literally, of the guys shooting at them from the hardware store. Not to mention the front door of the Condon Bank being in the exact same line of fire.

Still lookin a small town so what a day . lengthy shootout, numerous deaths . Bloody affair Recall hearing they had been in this town before and due to that one of them was recognized. These guys were seasoned bad guys so this whole situation speaks to arrogance of the gang. Why would you plan a DOUBLE robbery in a town where you could be recognized right off? The wreckless placement of the horses for fast getaway again implies a careless overconfident attitude for which they all paid the ultimate price. Love how they have preserved the ole bank and all the other historic landmarks. Great video !

What a great video. I'm going ghost hunting at Eastside Cemetery in Hutchinson, Kansas on Halloween night, where Richard "Dick" Broadwell is buried in an unmarked grave in the Wilcox family plot. As a psychic medium I like to do my research before I go to a location so I've got a little material to work with so I can better relate to the deceased when I try to make contact with him or her. Anyway, thanks for the video tour. Hopefully, it will pay off for me on Halloween night. I will look forward to a visit to Coffeyville in the near future to check it out myself. #saltcitypsychic
