Thank you-we have rhubarb that was planted over 20 years ago-and we just bought the property and knew the rhubarb hasn’t been doing well-so this year -I took the plunge after watching another video-well, I found your video to be more complete and easier to do-thank you for removing the whole “bulb”-mine is about 15” across ……I just felt like I was just hacking and maiming with the other video

Thanks for the comment!! I’ve seen some other ways of just removing part of it but I’ve always split mine this way and it always grows back really well. The ones I split and planted are growing great this year. Letting them grow this year and harvesting off of my other plants so they’ll be ready next year. Thanks for watching and glad it was helpful!!!

Thanks for this! I’m right with you on Rhubarb, I love the stuff! It’s so easy to grow, but really expensive to buy the stalks in the supermarket! It’s really the plant that starts the harvest season in my garden.

It always feels like spring finally gets here when it starts popping out of the ground. I agree that it’s so expensive at the store and it always looks terrible and dried out. Just can’t beat fresh. I always chop some up and vacuum seal it in the freezer then it’s ready for pie through out the year and always looks fresh when thawed out. Thanks for watching!!

When you said how old your rhubarb was, I had to chuckle thinking of our own. In March 1983 my wife & I purchased the property that had been what my paternal grandparents purchased as their retirement property, when they left the farm to my Father, some 40 years before we bought it. I don’t know if the rhubarb and asparagus was here when my grandparents bought the property or whether they brought it here from the home farm but, growing up as a kid visiting my grandparents, they had both rhubarb and asparagus. Despite definitely never treating our rhubarb the way you do, and the way it should be, I’m happy to say that the rhubarb is still producing much more than my wife and I could use. However, the volume of asparagus dropped off, last year for the first time, so I am taking steps to try to have a better crop, this year. Almost 25 years ago, a local asparagus grower whose kids went to school with our own, was impressed with our asparagus patch(s) as he indicated asparagus should not grow like that in clay soil which we have.🤷‍♂️ Regardless, enjoyed your video!

Thanks for the comments!! I remember my grandfather having big rhubarb plants down the middle of his garden when I was a kid. Dad said he didn't remember him digging them up and dividing like this but he always had good looking plants. I haven't been growing it long enough to see if I can get away with letting it go but plan on trying in the future. So far, the dividing has been working very well and I get to multiply my plants this way!! The rhubarb plants I didn't dig up this year are looking great and have grown like crazy. I think I'll have enough to make a pie this weekend and maybe some fresh asparagus too with this warm spell this week!! Thanks again for the comments and glad you enjoyed the video!!!

@@buckeyegardener As a kid, raised on our family “home farm” we had a couple of big rhubarb patches (& a very productive asparagus patch) and one of the things that my late Father often did, on his own, was pick the rhubarb, cut it up and cook it up (with a lot of sugar😉) into a sauce that, eaten with vanilla ice cream was better than anything one could every buy as an ice cream topping at a grocery store.😋 My late Mother used to get mad at him for using so much sugar, but I certainly appreciated it!🤣
