I will try to do a better video this year when I make it again. Here’s a link to the video where I finished the sauce and around the 2:15-2:45 mark I explained what I did to ferment them. Brine 1 cup distilled water - 1 tablespoon salt. Enough brine to cover and submerge for 2 weeks. Hope this helps and I’ll try to make a better video this year. Those onions will make your potatoes sprout if you keep them below because of the gas. Move the onions up high above the potatoes and it won’t affect them. Even better put the onions in another area entirely

You were absolutely right. My potatoes sprouted early and didn’t get to enjoy them as long as I usually do. I moved the onions out of there but it was too late. Thank you for your comments and I’ll definitely have them in separate areas this year!!!

@@buckeyegardener 🙂 I had that happen to me also one year and then I found out the gas the onions produce was the reason lol it’s so good to get a nice tater crop and I’m always looking for ways to store mine for ultimate longevity. I’m thinking about just leaving them in ground this year actually. I get a new crop every 90-125 days and use buckets and in ground methods. I think the ones I pulled up this week I will just keep stored and leave all the rest in the dirt because unless the chipmunk gets at them they should be good and the dirt is such a good insulator

Thank you-we have rhubarb that was planted over 20 years ago-and we just bought the property and knew the rhubarb hasn’t been doing well-so this year -I took the plunge after watching another video-well, I found your video to be more complete and easier to do-thank you for removing the whole “bulb”-mine is about 15” across ……I just felt like I was just hacking and maiming with the other video

Thanks for the comment!! I’ve seen some other ways of just removing part of it but I’ve always split mine this way and it always grows back really well. The ones I split and planted are growing great this year. Letting them grow this year and harvesting off of my other plants so they’ll be ready next year. Thanks for watching and glad it was helpful!!!

When you said how old your rhubarb was, I had to chuckle thinking of our own. In March 1983 my wife & I purchased the property that had been what my paternal grandparents purchased as their retirement property, when they left the farm to my Father, some 40 years before we bought it. I don’t know if the rhubarb and asparagus was here when my grandparents bought the property or whether they brought it here from the home farm but, growing up as a kid visiting my grandparents, they had both rhubarb and asparagus. Despite definitely never treating our rhubarb the way you do, and the way it should be, I’m happy to say that the rhubarb is still producing much more than my wife and I could use. However, the volume of asparagus dropped off, last year for the first time, so I am taking steps to try to have a better crop, this year. Almost 25 years ago, a local asparagus grower whose kids went to school with our own, was impressed with our asparagus patch(s) as he indicated asparagus should not grow like that in clay soil which we have.🤷‍♂️ Regardless, enjoyed your video!

Thanks for the comments!! I remember my grandfather having big rhubarb plants down the middle of his garden when I was a kid. Dad said he didn't remember him digging them up and dividing like this but he always had good looking plants. I haven't been growing it long enough to see if I can get away with letting it go but plan on trying in the future. So far, the dividing has been working very well and I get to multiply my plants this way!! The rhubarb plants I didn't dig up this year are looking great and have grown like crazy. I think I'll have enough to make a pie this weekend and maybe some fresh asparagus too with this warm spell this week!! Thanks again for the comments and glad you enjoyed the video!!!

@@buckeyegardener As a kid, raised on our family “home farm” we had a couple of big rhubarb patches (& a very productive asparagus patch) and one of the things that my late Father often did, on his own, was pick the rhubarb, cut it up and cook it up (with a lot of sugar😉) into a sauce that, eaten with vanilla ice cream was better than anything one could every buy as an ice cream topping at a grocery store.😋 My late Mother used to get mad at him for using so much sugar, but I certainly appreciated it!🤣

It always feels like spring finally gets here when it starts popping out of the ground. I agree that it’s so expensive at the store and it always looks terrible and dried out. Just can’t beat fresh. I always chop some up and vacuum seal it in the freezer then it’s ready for pie through out the year and always looks fresh when thawed out. Thanks for watching!!

I've made hot, smoked paprika as well as powdered onion and garlic for many years. To grind my onions, garlic and peppers I started using a coffee/spice grinder but soon graduated to a good-quality spice grinder. It made a huge difference! If you want to further refine your powder, you might try putting your ground product through a fine-meshed sifter. Thanks for the video. Cheers.

Good presentation however a suggestion. I would record the planting experience then fast forward just to show the process of how you do it which gives this more content. I'm new at gardening I have this liquid organic fertilizer should I dilute it when applying. I'm also using used treated deck boards to make a raised garden box. The boards are in fair condition, and I am trimming where the screws where in the board, but a KZfaq video said it would be safe to use and if there was an issue the plants would die, and I'm using it for vegetables for consumption.
@buckeyegardener
@buckeyegardener 9 ай бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion. Still trying to figure out the format and I’m always in a rush every time I try to make a video lol. I would apply the fertilizer in the recommended ratio on the jug. For example I have some agrothrive 3-3-5 that mixes 4 ounces of concentrate to 1 gallon of water. I will use that again this spring when it starts growing and maybe some liquid fish fertilizer. As far as the boards I would use them. I know some people don’t like treated boards but I’ve used them and my dad has used the same raised beds in his garden for over 20 years out of treated boards. They last so much longer than untreated and if you get to recycle them like your deck boards that’s even better!!! I’m no expert but that is what I would do. Thanks for watching!!!

DO NOT store your onions in the same place as those potatoes!! Onions give off a gas that will cause your potatoes to sprout. Keep onions and potatoes as far away as possible from each other. I'm no expert but I just learned this the hard way. I keep my onions in a totally separate room from potatoes and the potatoes last much, much longer.
