As a NZer, I just knew that Rhys would use that term! And that the Americans would have no idea what the hell he was talking about. I actually didn't know that it was linked to carcass though. I had never thought about what it might be linked to as I was just so used to hearing it.

Apparently, that is an actual phrase for passed away. It's just never used in America where the people are surveyed. "Carked it" is a phrase that only exists in the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.

Carked it is a perfectly cromulent way of describing someone dying in an inappropriate manner - if you don't live in the USA....

@@hollyb6877 im 30, from USA, NJ all my life: “looks like the old man finally croaked”. or “if he doesn’t get to a hospital, he’ll be pushing up daisies!” can confirm two of the most famous phrases here in the USA to insensitively refer to death especially in cartoons. meanwhile, never heard of “carked” in my life lol. aren’t cultural differences fascinating?

@@hollyb6877 As an American, I have no idea why “croaked” = died if I really think about it, but “pushing up daisies” is like you’re dead and buried and now flowers are growing on your grave. A regional saying here that my mom learned when she visited Atlanta years ago was for when someone asks how you are, to say, “I’m on the right side of the grass,” meaning, ‘I’m still alive, not dead and buried.’

We use it in India as a polite way of saying someone died. Even obituaries use that word.

Indians say "expired" it even appears in obituaries. I have heard USians say 'iced" or "wasted" and they certainly don't sound nice.

as an american, I can tell you that "carked it" is not a phrase here, so it sounds funny (we know what a carcass is but we sadly have not made it into a verb). I don't think the answer is necessarily funny but i think what made it funny was Rhys Darby's confident delivery of the answer juxtaposed with steve harvey's over the top reaction....
