We've all bound off in rib stitch only to find that the edge is not nearly as stretchy as the ribbing itself. The Ribbed Sewn Bind Off is a great way to finish off a 1x1 rib while maintaining its elasticity.
For this technique you'll thread the bind-off tail onto a tapestry needle and pass it through the remaining live stitches in four easy-to-remember, repeating steps. The result is super tidy and so nice and stretchy, you'll want to finish off all your ribbed socks, necklines, and top-down sleeves with a Ribbed Sewn Bind Off!

Great tutorial. I found it helpful to write down the steps, and I broke the 4th step into two steps. Step 4.1) Insert tapestry needle from back to front in between 1st & 2nd stitches on needle. Step 4.2) Insert tapestry needle knitwise into 2nd stitch on needle; then start back at step 1.

I see your explanation when your work begins with a purl. After setup stitches, first stitch will be purlwise. Then am I following the 4 step process from that point forward since I now have a K stitch as my starting stitch? If so, then I slip a stitch off for that first purlwise stitch and also for the next stitch which is the 1st knit stitch in the 4 step process?

@PurlSoho
@PurlSoho Жыл бұрын
Hi Ginelaine, that's a great question! The trick is to pretend that the first purl stitch is one with your second stitch, the knit stitch. You can follow the instructions in our video, but treat the first 2 stitches as just 1 knit stitch. Alternatively, you can work 1 decrease row and decrease away the purl stitches on either end, leaving you with knit stitches at the edges instead.

Hi Hannah! I'd recommend treating the first 2 knit stitches as 1 stitch, so that your ribbing pattern essentially becomes a normal 1 x 1 rib.

Hi Claudia! Thanks for your feedback and know that we're always here to help! I would suggest knitting a small swatch (like Laura's, shown in the video) and then try working the stitch in a contrast yarn. Seeing how the working yarn weaves it way through may shine a light on the process! If you need additional support, please reach out to our customer service team, and I hope someone is able to help troubleshoot! www.purlsoho.com/contact-us

The pattern I’m following suggests this bind off, but it has me beginning the bind off for the one by one ribbing on a purl stitch. Would the steps be the same in this case?
@PurlSoho
@PurlSoho 3 ай бұрын
I'm afraid that you won't be able to use the exact same steps if your row begins with a purl! However, it's really easy to turn that purl into a knit stitch! Just work two more rows, working a k2tog to start (and, if your row also ends in a purl, an ssk to finish), and then you will have 1 x 1 ribbing that begins and ends with a knit stitch. At that point, you can follow the steps in the video exactly!

@PurlSoho 6 ай бұрын
Hello! This technique is indeed very similar to Kitchener stitch, since you're essentially grafting the edge together. In practice though, I think it's helpful to think about them as separate techniques, since the instructions are different, and they have very different applications in projects.

Can you use this technique on a 2x1 ribbing?
@PurlSoho
@PurlSoho 2 жыл бұрын
I think it might be possible. I'd suggest knitting up a small swatch (like what Laura has here) and practicing. You will definitely need to rework the 4 step repeat, as you'll have 2 knit stitches followed by 1 purl. Not terribly complicated, you'll just repeat the first step for your first knit stitch twice (insert the yarn knit wise) before doing the purl stitch. But without practicing myself, I'm not entirely sure it could work - but expiration may yield very satisfying results!

The first stitch of your work is a KNIT. Would the bind-off technique be exactly the same if it were a PEARL ? If not, what to do ?
@PurlSoho
@PurlSoho 4 жыл бұрын
Great question, Simone! Thanks for writing in and you're right! This set up is for a knit stitch beginning rib. If your first stitch in your row is a purl, you'll do the same set up steps (the first 2 steps in our tutorial) and then when it's time for you to slip your first stitch off, you'll want to be sure to pull your tapestry needle thru the first stitch purl-wise instead of knit-wise (as Laura demonstrates here.) Then, continue with the process as is. Happy knitting!

Thanks for writing in, Connie! Good eye! This is very similar but the set up is a bit different. If you're looking for help with a tubular bind off, check out our tutorial here: www.purlsoho.com/create/long-tail-tubular-bind-off/ That method uses two needles to create a rounded "tube" while this method creates a slightly stretchier bind off using just a darning needle. You don’t mention anything about knit or purl stitches and if that has any effect in what you are doing. For example, would the pattern change if it was k2p2, or k2p1, etc..

Hi Jane! Unfortunately, this technique as we demonstrate in the video doesn't work with other patterns of knit and purl stitches. I believe that there are other similar techniques out there though that will work with 2 x 2 ribbing (or another combination), but this specific method is tailored to 1 x 1 ribbing!
