That is great. They are great friends/companions at all times, but more so during times of difficulty, when we are often isolated. Most humans are there to use you when they need something. Supposedly true friends also disappear! But animals remain unconditionally loyal always to the humans who care for them! Nick Sevdalis Mad Animal Lover Melbourne Australia

Hi, Gerard. These are our residents. We are a companion bird sanctuary. Each bird here has some kind of story behind what brought them to this place. Our goal is to give them as much freedom as we can while still giving them care and safety. Eventually we hope to have them all living in large aviaries where they can live as a flock and fly together.

Wow, what a GORGEOUS aviary!! I've never seen one so roomy, and yet, so well decorated! It's airy but still has enough playthings for the birds to enjoy. I've had Parakeets (Budgies) over the years, they are special little birds. Would have loved to watch your birds explore the aviary more, without the music.

Thanks! Actually it's very loud if we use the natural "sound track"! It's hard to believe that the aviary has been in place for what will soon be 3 years! I hope to get some time to make a new updated video. We've changed the decor quite a bit. The floor is now a hard floor which is easier to clean. The papers were messy and they just chewed through them, which meant cleaning the floor beneath anyway. We also have added a lot of natural branches to the aviary, along with other features. The birdbath (hanging wooden frame with plastic "bowl" near the center of the structure) died very early in the game. It was designed for songbirds. We are going to order some metal and glass ones. We also have added more ways to feed and most recently, a fountain. I will try to get a new video up as soon as the workload here permits!

How fun was that! Is that in your living room or a dining room? It’s HUGE! My two girls are in that same cage. The small one that is. They’ve been out twice now. They are really beginning to fight though. It was an impulse buy I never should have done. My boys are in flight cages.

To give a little bit more information on this aviary - we purchased TWO Centurion walk-in cages, each 5' by 7' and 7' tall. We removed the back of each and placed them against each other. By removing the backs, you have to remove the 'curved' area you see at the top (you can see it very clearly at about 3:35). The curved area and the rounded corner on each side removes approximately 6" so that two 5' sides combined make only 9' when attached. This is still a good sized area and allows for plenty of room for toys and for flying. We purchased the cages through Karrie at Natural Inspirations Parrot Cages (you can find them by searching for Natural Inspirations Parrot Cages on Facebook). The birds have been in there for nearly six months and love it!

You'd have saved a fortune just converting the room without adding the caging. We have two large entirely interior rooms used for birds---and a bathroom a Congo tried to destroy so it is armored, LOL. We use almost exclusively natural branches, so our cost is reduced to a few screws. If there is space outside the window, perhaps move the half of this without a door there with some perches so they can come and go from fresh air and daylight. Our hen house is its own climate controlled structure with windows opening into a 500 sq ft open air aviary with foraging garden, fountain, etc. You can probably take most of what you've already done and do something similarly enriching. :)

Thank you! This flight is actually made from two 5' x 7' flight cages from Natural Inspirations Parrot Cages (naturalinspirationsparrotcages.com/products/walk-in-aviary-large-110-x-62-x-80). The end section of each is curved, and makes up approximately 6" of length so you lose about 1' when you remove those curved sections to bolt the two together, but it's still a very large enclosure.

@MardensArk 6 жыл бұрын
At the time, the floor was carpet (ugh!) and a pain to keep clean. We put down paper but it got chewed up, blown around and the carpet was a mess. We ripped it out and replaced it with a very smooth durable hard flooring that we can scrape, sweep, vacuum and mop. MUCH nicer! You can see the new flooring in the newer videos.

@MardensArk
@MardensArk 7 жыл бұрын
We used to put down papers as the floor was carpeted. It was a NIGHTMARE as the papers blew all over when the birds flew. Now we've replaced the carpet with hard floor. We sweep up with a shop vac or broom, scrape the floor and mop with wet mop and a steam mop. Karrie, of Natural Inspirations (the company that sells them) uses some kind of large rolls of paper under hers. I will see if I can get her to post here to give more information.

Yes. Sadly humans feel they have the right to take possession of whatever they see. Unfortunately, these little birds are not able to make it on their own in the wild, and returning them to the wild would be abandoning them to a cruel fate. Hopefully someday the mills will stop churning them out for a profit and humans will realize birds were meant to remain in the sky. Until then, we do what we can to give them as good a life as we can provide. At least in an aviary setting, they have autonomy to be the birds they desire to be, to form bonds, live as a flock and enjoy the social life that budgies were born to live.
@catclark9488

Yep. If people didn't buy birds, then they wouldn't be bred for our "enjoyment', seeing them imprisoned for the rest of their lives in often too small cages for them to even fly in.

naturalinspirationsparrotcages.com/products/walk-in-aviary-medium-86x62x80 - choose the 1/2" bar spacing. Note: ours is TWO of these, we removed the back of both and put them together. This involved a bit of adjusting and a few bits of hardware that were not included (long screws with bolts to fasten them to each other) but it's really easy to do. Putting it together was fairly easy with most of it (except the roof) being a 1 man job!

@MardensArk
@MardensArk 7 жыл бұрын
Ahh! I am sorry, I thought you were making a joke about the aviary being too small for the flock! That cage was for TRANSPORTATION only. I promise you they were not all living in that cage! In their quarantine room, they were in six small cages of 4 birds to a cage. Obviously not acceptable. We actually cobbled five of the cages together to form "the maze" where all the flock could be together. These birds were our second group of birds rescued and at the time we had to take baby steps. They were surrendered from a hoarding-type situation and brought to Marden's Ark in August 2014 and we worked diligently to have them flying again by Christmas eve 2014. I agree, that cage was extremely small and in reality, unless your bird is out every day, too small for even one bird because they don't have room to "fly" any more than short hops from perch to perch, and that is simply not sufficient exercise. Our end goal is to have all non-handicapped birds living in flocks in year-round outdoor aviaries. But that takes time and funds. Please check out our website: www.avianrefuge.org or our FB page: facebook.com/mardensark for more information and to see how these little guys are doing two years later! All but one (who sadly passed of a heart attack) are still alive and thriving. :)
