Ricardo Lopez has a 51-0 record with a 75 percent knockout rate, and while that would be very impressive for a heavyweight, Foreman has about an 85 percent knockout rate for example, Lopez pulled this off while weighing close to a hundred pounds.
But Lopez was no mere knockout artist. In fact, it was a major upset if he happened to lose a few rounds in an otherwise flawless fight. His style even inspired the character of Richardo Martinez in the phenomenal boxing anime Hajime No Ippo. Thats how humble and classy he is. He wasn't waiting out boxers to see when he could beat them. He wouldn't be using dirty tactics like compulsive hugging or grabbing the ropes. He wouldn't get fixed scorecards. He fought anybody anywhere anytime and was truly a master. His fights were never boring due to his elegance and mastery in the ring. A true masterful style that anybody can admire and watch in awe. He is really one of TBE.

Go look at his record, loads of them are debuting, shit ton of them have losses upon losses, he defending his title vs a guy with just 4 fights at one point. It ain’t no disrespect to Lopez but his resume is very poor, he didn’t fight many quality fighters. This is a well known fact.

When Martinez was sparing with Ippo before the Martinez vs Date fight, they explained a concept about how boxers and other martial artists develop an instinct to read an upcoming punch from the slight movement of the shoulders so that they can counter, parry or just dodge the attack. There was a scene where they explained that Martinez's shoulder and his hand(from shoulder to the elbow) doesn't makes even the slightest of movement before throwing a punch which makes his punches almost impossible to perceive and adds to his amazing punching speed. I've been practising martial arts for many years and i became interested in Boxing after i watched hajime no ippo, i must admit the anime showed a great deal of realistic explanations regarding the concepts of the fist. This concept is as real as it gets because I've noticed this in my fights and mastering this tactic is very very tough.

You should watch the documentary of finito lopez its in Spanish but it said that for a month all he did was throw the jab over and over until his coach said he wasn't telegraphin then he learned his 2 and 3s and so on. I got into boxing about 16 yrs ago because I spared a boxer and I was a tkd guy he seemed to know when I was gonna punch and he had better balance i learned boxing because of these two things and became a better kicker now I dont just move in an out now boxing game me a multi dimensional way of looking at boxing. I think all martial arts should take the boxing approach of teaching technique.

the secret of lopez was the move of his legs.. he moves the legs like "he will trow a heymaker" and the enemy boxer knows this..but he receive a liver blow..so they can't even know what move will do lopez. U can see in the anime with a single jab over ippo how he wanna evade the jab..and just receive it with the doble impact. That's the same what happen when they see his legs moves and prepare for it..just to get nukked in other part of the body.

I’ll never forget how true this was: someone I think on BoxingScene posted that Ricardo’s only flaw was that he was 105lbs and not 135. If he were even 10lbs heavier he could have fought stiffer competition. But Ricardo dominated his class even at his mid-30s in a weight class where guys are finished at 30 years old.

@@BOSSG0718 You're right, he was a great fighter, he loved god and honored his parents but also he is a smart person, he gives motivational talks about his life and career, once I attended to one of them, he said that when he was a kid his parents would ask him to read books, if he was able to answer their questions about the book, they would let him be a boxer, he always answered correctly lol.

This guys boxing game was just flawless; perfect at both ofense and defense. In Japan he is considered a boxing god, they even made an anime/manga character inspired after him. ('Ricardo Martinez' from Hajime no Ippo, a boxing series) As a Mexican, I am proud that my contry has produced such high level boxers.

Ricardo has been a friend of our family for years. My grandfather and him have a strong friendship. I was invited to see him fight on many occasions. My favorite memory is when I went to Vegas to watch him fight the under card for Tyson vs Bruno. One of the coolest things I can remember as kid, He let me take a picture wearing one of his title belts. I still have the picture. So cool this came up on my feed. Great video

@erikcarrillo33 I like KO's as much as the next guy. In fact , seeing a young Tyson destroying guys got me into boxing in the 80's. But it was the HOW he did it that intrigued me. He would work his way to the inside, destroy the body with hooks. And then when the body gave way, he would go to the head with more hooks and uppercuts. Very strategically. Wilder is the KING of wild, blind punches.

If you watched pretty much any Don King PPV in the 90's, then you had the privilege of watching this absolute master. A legend who isn't talked about as often as he should be when conversations about the greatest p4p fighters come about. Also a very intellectual man inside and outside the ring. Spent most of his free time reading. I believe he's a motivational speaker now.

His movement, punching , and combinations are so fluid and gorgeous. He reminds me slightly of Salvador Sanchez or an advanced Mikey Garcia. He took the fundamentals of orthodox boxing and applied them at the highest level.

I have learnt so much from watching your videos. Your break downs help me appreciate the artistry, tactics and the different skills used in boxing. You have increased my understanding of this sport, and my admiration for the masters. When i was a child growing up in the 70's i had a Muhammed Ali doll, that I have kept to this day. That is how long I have been interested in boxing - to learn new things after being a fan for decades has really reinvigorated my love for boxing. As has the massive library of fights that are now available on KZfaq. I cannot thank you enough my friend.

My Dutch friend, may I please know what is your earliest memory and/or history with my country of México, with Mexicans or with Mexican culture as far back as you can possibly remember as a child or teenager in your native Holland? In other words how did you first learn about Mexico, Mexicans and Mexican culture growing up? Perhaps your very first knowledge about México first occurred in school, or by watching television or a movie that mentions México, Mexicans, etc? Or perhaps it was your parents or other family members or friends or others who first introduced you to my country of México, or Mexican culture for the first time in your life? Or perhaps your very first knowledge about México happened in some other way? By the way, Robben did fall on purpose in that Holland vs Mexico game in the World Cup of Brazil 2014? Thanks for another great one. Hands down best boxing channel on the web. You can watch it for many reasons. Entertainment, or if one chose they could learn to box from scratch watching your breakdowns. I have been boxing for many years and I gotta admit I have improved in many areas from studying the fighters in these breakdowns and implementing things I like from almost each one. Amituofo!

Great video and excellent channel. I had the chance to knew him when I was a teen here in Mexico, it was of those magical moments. He was in his prime, his fights always stopped my life for an hour and I talked with him for a minutes to express my respect and admiration, a kind and humble person, all this was possible to my father who died the last year. Thanks for sharing these videos.

I love watching fighters like him and Dempsey using semi unorthodox footwork thats efficient more than complex to simply outwork their opponents. His use of distance and pivoting to maintain his preferred position rather than shuffling with his opponents is phenomenal

One of the most smoothest boxers ive seen in 45 yrs as a amateur boxer and fan.Very under appreciated because of the small weight classes he fought in had no opponent for a real mega-fight. So it hurt his notoriety in terms of the casual fan's and even some true followers of the sport.But he's in my top 10 p4p all-time #SALUTE "El Finito"🥊🥊👊🏾💯💯💯💪🏾👍🏾💭

In the early 90's my late father talked about how refined this guy's boxing was. I didn't know about boxing but as I grew older became one of my favorite sports, I see about everything my father and my stepfather talked about. Truly a joy to watch boxing from the perspective of a tactical war. I really liked your video. I have watched it a few times. It is very neatly narrated. I loved when you said "after rounds and rounds of trying to get inside, you finally get your wish, only to discover that at your preferred range, he's better than you there too." I think the second type of offense you brilliantly mention when finito uses his cross right hand and also when switches stances is also seen in sal Sanchez, finito López is one of the best to ever do it for sure, nice video!

so glad Hajime no Ippo is getting the recognition it deserves in the west with your channel and vids giving it more exposure. for sports anime fans the anime is the gold standard imo. you can tell the creator is really a student of boxing. his history, background, and details he includes in his manga/anime are a testament. it's filled with lots of crazy funny moments too. the humor is crude but the characters are very likable. keep the vids up and spreading ippo!

Ricardo was one of my heroes, only downside to his career is that a lot of the guys he fought were pretty poor, his resume isn't too great but the skill still shows.

To be fair, it wasn't his fault thats all he had and he faced "The best" in that division where Boxing was evolving. I like to look at it as the Gracies. At the time no one really understood jujitsu and if they boxed now against the top 10. They would lose and not have a crazy hundred undefeated record. Ya know?

Sure he faced the best at minimumweight which was an absolutely awful division but he also hung around there for years, he ruled this barren wasteland for as long as he could, like I said.. Compare him to Roman Gonzalez who was also 40+ undefeated and unbeaten as an amateur, he only met his match by moving up. His resume is leagues ahead of Ricardos and should be remembered as greater for taking those risks. Alvarez made him look very human at minimum, lets not pretend there wasn't great fighters in just the division above if he decided to go up earlier, there was Michael Carbajal, Humberto and in the division above that guys like Tapia and Danny Romero and Mark 2 Sharp if my memory serves me correctly. He was a pretty lanky guy for his weight and had the room to fill out I mean 5'5 isn't small for a guy that weight.
