Learn about making pigments from soil in this tutorial with Canadian landscape artists Cam Forrester, Greg Hargarten, Paul Trottier, Roger Trottier, and Ken Van Rees. Watch as the Men Who Paint, make pigments from soil, bone and antler.
Since their formation in 2007, Men Who Paint have embraced plein air painting. Inspired by the work and adventurous spirit of the early Canadian painters, the group, until recently, has spent most of their painting time outdoors. Their travels have seen them at many Canadian locations, including Banff National Park, Ontario’s Algonquin Park, and Yukon’s Ivvavik National Park, Prince Albert National Park, Emma Lake, La Ronge and Cypress Hills.

These earths and minerals are easy work. Wait until you try organic pigments like Phthalo blue and green and the quinacridones. Your arm will get T-I-R-E-D! Smaller particle sizes and much more surface area to deal with.

I have dozens of tiny viles of powder pigments used in China painting. You mix it with oils and a tiny palette knife. This is how you make China paint. It doesn’t come in a tube. It’s a very specialized art. You make a palette of tiny piles of mixed paint. It lasts for months covered. When you need more you mix up more for just that color.

montcalm0 there are different oils. One called mixing oil has clove in it among other things. Keeps it from drying out. Other Oil has lavender in it. The paints remain wet until fired in a kiln. You paint them sort of like water colors. One layer at a time. Each layer is fired until you have a satisfactory look. Always leave your light areas unpainted till last because you can not paint light over dark, like water color.

Hi Greg, Really enjoyed watching your process in crafting your pigments from various and earth matter. Ive been making my own pigments for years now and am being asked more and more to facilitate workshops around my region in Australia. My main aim in commencing my journey was to ditch synthetics sold to us in single use plastic containers. Could you tell me why you go to all the trouble of creating your beautiful natural pigments only to make paint with an acrylic binder please? Thanks

Hi Maureen, our aim was to learn and experience making the pigments. Being a painter with a background in acrylics, the gel was the first thing that came to mind for me to use as a binder. The others used a variety of different binders. In future projects I think I'd like to try something more natural. What have you found works best or what could you suggest?

If it says on the package it's a mineral oxide, it should almost certainly have no fading. The pigments infamous for fading rapidly are vegetable ones. Some fade within mere days or even hours like beet juice or berries. Some will last months or some years like madder, indigo, or weld, but will still fade a lot compared to minerals. Some complex more delicate mineral pigments fade too, but basic oxides are some of the most stable compounds around and are almost always completely permanent.

I think the equipment you're asking about is the muller. You can buy a glass muller and slab online. Some people use a granite slab which you can get in home stores. It appears to me that these guys are seasoned vets in what they are doing but not necessarily into lecturing or preparing speeches or lesson plans and simply assume the viewer comes with some background knowledge and experience, not a beginner arts person. They are doing what they do and what interests them. In an abstract way of thinking, making (mixing cement, water sand and gravel - binder and pigment/binder) and pouring concrete (applying mix to substrate) is painting. Oil (or any other) paint is equivalent to concrete but specific in its own way.

@@GregHargarten Hi, actually is not about the video. Anyways, will it work if i mix linseed oil and eyeshadow pigment, to make oil paint or the formula wont work for that?

@@kayagms Hi Kaya, I really don't know that much about linseed oil, but I would wonder if eye shadow pigment is permanent and light fast (will it break down of fade over time)?

@@GregHargarten That was exactly my concern, I've googled everywhere, I don't think anybody have tried this experiment. I have a bunch of eyeshadows that Im about to throw away and i had this idea. But i didn't want to spend weeks or month on a painting to ended up being ruined.

Soil + water. Then mix with your favorite medium (acrylic gel, egg tempera, GAK 100, etc.) and paint.
