When I told my husband that I was making Rice-A-Roni from scratch (to which I followed your ingredients to the tee) he gave me a puzzled look and then laughed. He thought I was making a joke. Well, I made it and it is awesomeness! Just like I remember from my childhood, only better. Well done John. You have made my husband and I very happy with your recipes. Thank you John!

I have made this so many times and have never commented and decided it's time. Seriously, this is the absolute best! I can't have gluten due to an allergy so I don't add in the pasta and still comes out incredible! My husband love it too! Thank you Chef John for always making dinner great! I have tried many of the other dinner recipes you have and have never been disappointed!

Whe I lived as a jung girl many years ago in the US I loved rice-a-roni. I just finished making your home made Rice - Ah - Roni. Absolutely fabulous!!! Much better than the original. I was a blt lazy, so I used 1/8 Teaspoons of onion powder instead of fresh onions and I also added 1/8 Teaspoon of garlic powder. I would use less garlic powder next time. Thank you Chef John and greetings from Germany
Man, I LOVE this guy's personality, voice, and commentary! I have so many of his videos favorited xD Also, the last bit where he gives jabs to Rice-A-Roni and everything after that was fantastic xD

The advertisement used to sing "Rice-a-Roni, the flavour can't be beat. Rice-a-Roni, the San Francisco treat." :) So now that is running quite comfortably in my head. Dang! Vermicelli would work well in place of the orzo too. i think that's what the original boxed thing uses.

Ebba Lytle Sauté and simmer; the flavour can't be beat. Rice-a-Roni, the San Francisco treat! I guess I loved that advertisement for Rice-a-Roni even more than you did, eh?
@2CraftySeniors7 жыл бұрын
LOL I guess my memory isn't as good as I thought. LOL Just looked it up and according to the Rice-a-Roni site, it goes: "Rice-A-Roni®, The San Francisco Treat! Rice-A-Roni®, its flavor can't be beat! One pan, no boiling, cooking ease, a flavor that is sure to please. Rice-A-Roni® The San Francisco Treat! Ding! Ding!" Not sure what era you're from but I was in my teens when this food came on television in '62. Black and white only in those days too. ;)

Now I have something to replace the theme song from Gilligan's Island, which has been playing in my head for the last 40 years.
@2CraftySeniors7 жыл бұрын
Ah yes... Good Ol' Gilligan. Well, I have this advertisement from Winnipeg for the Perth's drycleaning company that was on the radio when I was between 5 and 10 years old that rambles through my head quite often. "Perth's has another buy of the week. You'll save money on the buy of the week. Drycleaning value just can't be beat. It's the buy of the week from Perth's. Ole." I have no idea why the Ole at the end of that because their logo had two Scotty dogs (actually a West Highland and a Scotty named Snap and Suds) on it, but I remember dancing around the living room ole-ing my heart out. LOL Crazy the stupid things we remember... and especially when they're mixed up with a song.

I haven't used this recipe yet but most likely will tonight. One thing I noticed though was he tested for salt after it was already done. I make flavored rice way more often than just plain rice and I always check for taste before putting on the lid. You can definitely tell how salty it is at that point.

It looks delicious. I make something like this, but use short angel hair spaghetti. I toast it in a pan without oil, so whan cooked it stands out from the rice. The rest is the same. Chef John you should do a Cuban beef braise/roast dish called Boliche, most of what you'll find is stuffed ignore that, its pressure cooked in a lime or sour orange sauce. It's delicious, usually served with plantains maduros or tostones, white rice and black beans, and some kind of salad. i think your viewers would enjoy this traditional cuban dish. it's usually made as a center piece for a family get together

I lived in San Francisco 45 years ago. My take - and this is a stick-to-your-ribs main dish. Several pots going simultaneously will be required. 1) Saute long-grain brown rice golden brown 2) add water & cook 3) add brown-sauteed chopped onions to cooked rice 4) add al dente boiled sliced carrots to rice 5) add al dente boiled sliced zucchini to rice 6) crush bag[s] of ramen noodles small & add to rice 7) add tamari & tahini to taste. Eat with chopsticks.

Don't beat me up. :( I make a similar dish in my rice cooker. Medium grain white rice. Orzo, but sometimes Fideo. The pasta is toasted without butter. Just a dry toast in a pan. Throw it into the rice pot. A drizzle of olive oil. Dried minced onion, pinch of garlic powder, heavy grind of black pepper, shaking of dried parsley, and finally some Knorr brand "Caldo Con Sabor de Pollo". Knorr chicken bouillon mixed to the water ratio on the package. You scoop it compared to cubes. It has plenty of salt to season the rice and pasta. I also use the "beef" flavor as well.
