Art Nouveau and Art Deco originals . . . not "revival". Do you know how inexpensively you can pick up pieces from 1900-1930?? If I had my choice, I'd only go with authentic. Revival pieces look like cheap knock-offs because they are . . .

@@krunkyk2294 I like the spelter pieces from France that were the cheap version of brass but are now very collectible and quite nice if you keep the lead away from small children and gnawing animals. Some pieces may not be from the only era you endorse, or are copies of the original, because most, if not all, are undated and unsigned. Travel posters that are copies of an ad for travel by steamship or a fast train that went out into the public in the 1920s or teens as copies of the ad agency's originals are no different then or today, except for aged paper. Art Nouveau never had the following of Art Deco but the art posters were popular in the 1970s. Major Art Nouveau artists include; Aubrey Vincent Beardsley, Alphonse Mucha, Gustav Klimt, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Louis Comfort Tiffany, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. You'll probably never get the classic pieces of Art Nouveau furniture because they are huge, vastly expensive, and/or in museums. I love the architecture of the Belgium movement by Henry van de Velde and Victor Horta. In the US both styles were reviled in their early years in decorating tomes for their cheap knock offs, soon after they appeared in America around 1900, which is amusing in that you categorize that as the authentic era. :) By the Depression era, Art Deco had infiltrated the decor world so thoroughly that it can be seen everywhere, from alarm clocks to bookcases. That was a revival in a sense, but you might say it was the poor family's attempt to add a bit of classiness and modernity. They were an extension of a streamlined vibe that started at the Paris Exposition for most Americans, and was an even bigger hit 20 and 30 years later for their grown kids. I find it difficult to know exactly what is original/authentic and what is the natural evolution of the style. Your golden era was early decorating books' ugly imitations. Something to think about. :)

My cousin is a contractor in Brooklyn, and he did a kitchen renovation where the owners wanted him to haul away a La Cornue stove that couldn’t have been more than a few years old. He asked what he should do with it, and they said “We don’t care.” It’s in his own beautiful kitchen now. Rich people are something else.

Not rich, but I once had a hot dog bun bed. For the first few years of married life, it was actually quite - ok. By the 5th year, we noticed it was developing a sag that would draw us both to the middle, but by that time we figured the extra encouragement for togetherness might not be a bad thing. After 10 years and a certain increase in poundage added to our mom and dad bods, bedtime had become a Rick-rolling ritual straight to that sagging middle ground - we nearly smothered each other nightly. A few more years, a Cpap machine, and several discarded snore-be-gone devices later, and we finally realized the ugly truth - we had become the hot dogs. So finally, we bit the bun, so to speak, and upgraded to a good (ok, better) bed. The marriage was saved, the hot dog bun bed got recycled into puppy training pads or something equally ignominious, and all remains well to this day.

All the talk about rooms dedicated entirely to the activity of gift wrapping reminded me of a documentary I saw that talked about the history of some grand European estate. Apparently this estate was known for it's ornamental flower garden, one of those where all the flower beds are arranged in a highly detailed geometric design. In the discussion of how garden designs evolved, this documentary talked about how precious land was for farming, thus any land where food of some kind could be grown, it would be grown. So when the super rich would dedicate large gardens just for flowers, it was not because rich people loved flowers so much, or that the flowers themselves were so valuable, it was to signal how wealthy they were. Why? Because only a truly wealthy person could afford to waste such valuable space, and a flower garden designed to just be beautiful was a good way to do that. I think that gift wrapping rooms are serving a similar function.

The history of those countries have also gone through great historical changes. Most people living on those estates nowadays (in the UK for example) are having to work hard to keep those homes up. In France there was a total revolution against the aristocracy. Most of the aristocracy literally lost their heads due to their gluttony. Here in the US we have seen great wealth be lost and those estates torn down for the room of multiple housing, as in New York. People eventually loose their wealth when they only have selfishness in mind.

My parents splurged on a Wolf range in their new home. My mom lost sleep bc she felt they were being wasteful, but my dad told her, “you’ve waited almost 40 years to have this stove. We’re doing it. No arguments.” Now she loves it and is so glad they have it. She uses it DAILY, multiple times a day, and says she can ABSOLUTELY tell a difference in how it helps her cook and bake. I think she still feels a bit sheepish about the expense, but at least the guilt is gone. She’s sacrificed so much for us throughout the years. She 100% deserves her fancy stove! ❤

Yeah - don’t be jealous of the expensive appliances. I have a La Cornue stove/oven and it is by far the most disappointing appliance purchase I have ever made. We were installing what was supposed to be my “dream” kitchen. When shopping for appliances, we saw that the display unit was available for sale and we got it. The price wasn’t too bad but it was still what I consider expensive. The stove is fine but the oven is a nightmare. It won’t hold a correct temperature and I just hate using it because it is so unreliable. This is like a handsome man or beautiful woman who doesn’t have to work hard because they are pretty. That’s my La Cornue in nutshell.

Great take on gift-wrap rooms! Reminds me of J.R.R. Tolkien's description of gifts and other acquisitions in The Hobbit: "So, though there was still some store of weapons in the Shire, these were used mostly as trophies, hanging above hearths or on walls, or gathered into the museum at Michel Delving. The Mathom-house it was called; for anything that Hobbits had no immediate use for, but were unwilling to throw away, they called a mathom. Their dwellings were apt to become rather crowded with mathoms, and many of the presents that passed from hand to hand were of that sort."

She says I don't know anything about it because I don't cook, I don't want to learn to cook, I only care that it looks amazing. Yes, I'm jealous. I prepare likely 20 meals a week on my awful electric cooktop and dream of the day when I can just get an induction model with exhaust. Just the shipping cost for that La Cornue would change my days. You’re so right about these ranges! I wanted the look for a La Cornue or Lacanche when we renovated our kitchen. However, after heavily researching I realized the cost was mostly for the look not the function. At those prices you’d think they would function flawlessly, but they don’t. We ended up with a Bluestar Professional range, which is still beautiful 🤩 and most importantly, is a workhorse. We can even get restaurant level stir fry using it! My husband is a chef/restaurant owner, so this is the sort of thing we splurge on. Also Thermador and Hestan were close contenders, but Bluestar is just so beautiful and you can get it in ANY color of the rainbow 🌈

In regards to kitchens appliances: I notice that upscale houses have these fancy stoves and fridges, but the rest of the kitchen is impractical. I cook every day and my 4 burner kitchenaid cooktop is just fine for that. Much more important is that I put drawers in all lower cabinets. That is what makes my daily kitchen live easier, not a fancy stove!

I’ve reached the point in my life where I just want a separate bedroom. For the past few years I either lived in dorms or in small studio apartments. I’m now trying to make more of a separate bedroom section in my current studio apartment, but I’m looking forward to one day having the luxury of having a wall between my fridge and my bed. But if I can really dream I’d want a home studio, so I can make music without disturbing anyone.

Ooh, a plant room - yes! With a potting station, water, excellent storage for gloves, tools, etc, a display case of favorite pots, and outdoor access so bins could be filled with potting soil, fertilizer, stone. And I am also with you on the sewing room! One station for ironing, as you say, but another constantly ready for cutting out patterns, along with room for (somehow!) neatly organizing and storing fabric remnants, and a built-in sewing table. And, while we're dreaming, I would like to add a storage room. No stairs (like to an attic), wide doorways for maneuvering large objects, in the house so I don't have to brave the garage in freezing weather, and room to keep my Christmas tree fully assembled year-round! And my personal favorite: a room for card making with an enormous, L-shaped workspace and plenty of natural light, as well as space for the (literally) thousands of tiny objects needed, from ink pads to sequins to embossing folders next to the full-wall of delicious-colored papers from all the best companies! (Such fun to dream....but I do love my own house, as average as it would appear to many!)

No! The wrapping paper room is a classic! It was hilarious when Martin got lost in Niles’ apartment and tried to get help over the intercom and Niles told him, “That’s the wrapping paper room.” We would joke about it for years afterward when we toured houses with old intercoms. It is deeply hilarious that people are actually installing them. I have a ludicrously large fireplace. It came with my ‘60s house. I dislike fireplaces. We put the tv in front of it. When we move the tv to the adjacent wall, I will put a long cushion on the hearth. We tried using it during a 10-day power outage in December once, and it didn’t warm the room at all. Utterly useless.

Nick, I wish I could send a photo to you of my massive fireplace. It's in the living room, which is a tiny space, I think it would be an interesting comparison. We live in England in a cottage built in the 1700s, it's grade listed and we rent so are unable to do anything with the space. We have a couple of fireplaces; two we can't use and the functioning one in the living room. Also you don't want a fireplace or a wood burner, they are dirty and make so much dust. I wish I was a rich person and then I could heat my house effectively and dust less. I would never have a fireplace if I could afford central heating and to live somewhere with central heating.

I too have always wondered why so many people think they have to have a professional chef's range--"gas, of course, which is what ALL the professional chefs use" (said with nose up in the snooty position). That always makes me snort since they think that's the only way to get "instant on, instant off". As one who grew up cooking on an electric cooktop, I like to remind them that the cooktop itself, as well as the burner and cast-iron stands over the burner, stay hot (so much for the "instant on/instant off" argument). Those of us who use electric figured out a long time ago that if you take the pot off the burner, it's actually "instant off". And now that we have magnetic induction cooktops, we get both instant on/off....oooooo, and PAUSE!

What I gather from watching rich people decor videos is that if you have "Don't have to care" levels of money you don't always think too much about how you spend it. An $8000 purchase is a major decision for most people regardless of what it is, let alone one piece of furniture. But someone with money can buy an $8000 novelty couch shaped like a hotdog for a theme party and then replace it whenever they get tired of it without caring about the cost. It's also kind of a trap because once you reach a certain level of money you're kind of expected to own expensive things even if they don't make sense, like those commercial grade kitchens that rarely get used. That's kinda the thing for me with rich people home tours. Of course they're cleaned and dressed up for television, but they end up looking like museums that nobody actually lives in.

Yes, older homes in my city do, too, but they are much smaller and many no longer work and the owners use central heat. The old ones had what looks like painted cast iron covers that helped warm the rooms without catching them on fire, esp. at night. They add charm to these older, raised homes' decor, though some of them are, happily, still in use. I think some of them use gas, too, and were forerunners to the floor furnaces.

@@GoogleUser-wx8mw Yes, I'm sure older victorian homes had that. However, I grew up in a log cabin my grandparents built, and the multiple fireplaces were necessary because there was little insulation (which was NOT offset by the "thermal mass" of the logs, as most log home builders would tell you). There would be frost on the inside of the windows at the back of the house if we didn't utilize all the fireplaces.

My dad, growing up in the 50s, would have stories how in winter sometimes he’d wake up with a layer of ice on the glass of water next to his bed, and my mum (few years younger) told me how there would sometimes be frost on her blanket. Both grew up in middle class families in middle class homes. Central heating changed everything, but our winters also aren’t that cold anymore.

RE shower heads, one is fine for me. At some point I need to be out of the spray so the soap can stick and do its work. I want to be able to move out of the spray, and then move into it to rinse off the soap.

but sewing and craft rooms are more like offices or workshops-they are practical in a sense bc you are probably using them to make stuff all the time. how often do people really give gifts? i think if the gift wrapping room were a multipurpose craft room then sure that's fine but just for gift wrapping seems strange!

The gift wrap is in a Rubbermaid bin under the bed or in the office closet for regular people. Use the dining room table for wrapping or a fold out sewing board on the bed or the floor… Wowo an entire room? For a few hours a year…

I completely admit that if I had one of those homes that AD comes to tour, I 100% would have a gift wrapping room, a cozy, warm kitchen with every super high end appliance & a huge fireplace in the family room, library ( because, of course I'd have a library) & a medium size fire place in the kitchen, bathroom & maybe each bedroom (even though I'd never burn them).

Thank you for sharing Nick! Always a treat! I can totally say, i am happy not being rich, that way i would never risk ending up with a hot dog sofa and a tomato pillow! A thought; it would be so interesting to hear and see what you would do if you had a grand villa to decorate and design how ever you wanted. How would you design it? What would you put in there? Please make a video about that! What trend would you go for? Let us know!

This IS a question--IF you were fabulously wealthy and had one ridiculously themed room in your mansion, what would it be? For me, maybe a cheese cellar. Or indoor roller skating rink. Because a sewing room has just been DONE. I also need a water slide somewhere.

Interesting question. I think I would have rooms for different moods. A bright room full of windows when you’re feeling expansive and a dark cave with absolutely no windows when feeling the need to withdraw. A room decorated in soft greens with very quiet patterns but another one pulsing with red, orange, yellow, hot pink wild, clashing patterns. I’m kind of warming to this idea 😂

It's really wonderful to see you looking content and more like you are getting your mojo back. Seriously. You've helped me distinguish a new color description for my internalized color wheel: hot dog bun brown. lol Lastly, an old friend just sent me a link to, what appears to be, a king-sized Snoopy bed, with giant plushie hindpaw foot board and a massive Snoopy head mounted as the headboard. I'll admit, it looked so comfy and plush, I wanted to crawl right in it and sleep. It was whimsical, but far more luxurious, plush, and inviting than that uncomfortable looking tiktok appropriate hot dog couch w/it's healthy-choice veggie throw pillows. As a former athlete, gymnast, and cheerleader, I spent way too much time training/practicing/performing in gymnasiums growing up, so I'm a big fan of the massive spaciousness of gymnasium-feel living spaces. I've joked, many times, that I'm going to buy an old school and turn the gym into a studio like my old Manhattan apartment, but instead of 12' x 24' x 13' it will be quadruple the size (sans the human-sized cremation fireplace lol).

Agreed. I have a 750sq ft duplex apt and work for clients with 6000sq ft homes, and I wouldn’t trade with them if the homes were given to me free of charge. I value cozy-ness over everything, and a house that huge would never feel cozy to me 🤷🏻‍♀️

To ease your kitchen envy, may I recommend the Anova oven, which can fit nicely on a countertop, and which serves as a Sous Vide, air fryer, bread oven (with steam!!) roast, and steam roast…too much to list. It’s under $1000, so VERY accessible. Seriously, I would take one of those, a 2burner induction plate, and an electric kettle and consider it a well equipped kitchen. Maybe add a toaster. Seriously. Check it out.

😊My BFF makes do quite well w/his barage of small kitchen appliances〰️a/f microwave, two instant pots, sous vide, rice cooker, immersion blender, blender, & a single induction cookpad. None of them heat up🥵 the place like the range🤣. Plus, his condo came w/an electric range that takes FOREVER to heat up🔥 & a double oven. The larger one holds all his heavy cast iron. The smaller one is used for baking & pizza. The flat cooktop has becoming a staging area for his sous vide & stand mixer. The induction cookpad is perfect for making delicate sauces too. 🤔Would definitely consider a small convection oven that allows baking, a/f, proofing, & dehydrating. Didn't know sous vide was an option. 💚Bridget from Cali☘️ (using my pal's YT acct)

Having a fireplace in the bathroom in cold weather countries sounds like a marvellous idea…. No freezing your little buns when climbing out of a nice hot bath. As for the gift wrapping room: well, if you are Gift Wrapper by Appointment to the King/Queen… Yup. I kid you not - the British royal family doesn’t bother to get their hands involved in doing something unique and fun for their (hopefully) loved ones. The wrapping is done by a professional to set designs….
