This version of "Simple Man" has a lot more behind it than a simple cover. In case people don't know, the original is by Lynyrd Skynyrd, with Ronnie Van Zant before his death in a plane crash in 1977. Shinedown and Skynyrd are both from Jacksonville, Florida. Shinedown's original guitarist, Jasin Todd is married to Melody Van Zant, Ronnie's daughter and the band used to play at a venue in Jacksonville called Freebird Live, which was owned by Melody and Judy Van Zant, Judy is Melody's mother and Ronnie's widow. The band used to play this as a tribute to Ronnie and a thank you to Judy. Incidentally, in this video there is a little girl holding a picture of a man - that man is Ronnie Van Zant and that little girl is his grand-daughter. The best comment I've seen about this is - "People don't realise that Shinedown is Lynyrd Skynyrd family".

Fun story I met Shinedown a few times. First time the lead singer came into my store, he was such a cool dude. He ended up giving me tickets to their show the following night in town as their personal guest. They sound amazing live. Then a few months later the drummer came in and did the same. Got to talk with both of them for awhile. Just super down to earth dudes.

Brent Smith is an amazing vocalist. He's 1 of the rare naturally talented singers. Crazy thing is he sounds better live!! Plus in an interview he said he has never had singing lessons. That alone makes his singing that much more impressive.

He sings with so much conviction and soul and passion. He did Lynyrd Skynyrd justice.
