Jack Merritt died during a recent London bridge stabbing attack. When he was in Uni, he campaigned for prison reform and ran courses for inmates. For those that don't know, the Windrush Generation is a scandal at the moment in the UK. After WW2, Britain naturalised colony members so that they could easily move to the UK (from places like Jamaica). It was in part to help rebuild infrastructure and make up job gaps. Theresa May's department started targeting some of those immigrants, because there was no paperwork proving they immigrated legally, even though they had - they literally got on a ship and were let into the country because they were British in the eyes of the law.

Dave is super knowledgeable about African history and american black history but it seems like he hasn't done any research on British history. The British actually started the movement to end slavery, they bought all of the slaves off of the slave owners and gave all of the slaves a pretty substantial lump sum as a reparation for them being taken as slaves. Obviously that doesn't erase the shit, not even close, but after the laws were past ending slavery in the British empire, there was a dedicated fleet sent to west Africa to intercept slave transports and free anyone aboard. Over the course of the time that fleet was active they saved over 300,000 Africans from being transported across the Atlantic to America. Now I'm not saying that this erases the British empires involvement in the creation of the slave trade triangle, but what I am saying is that Dave and his ancestors did not go through the same atrocities that most African Americans ancestors did. If you take that away though, this song is still fucking awesome and very powerful.
