Visiting Shotokan dojos around the world I often see an emphasis on shuto-uke which is fundamentally flawed. I hope this brief video shows why.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and instruction on KZfaq. There are so many voices, but so few have your Shotokan resume. Oss!! 🙏👍🏽👊

Thank you, Sensei! Following the advice you gave in the 2024 winter camp session on Heian Nidan, I've struggled to break the habit of turning into strong hanmi with gyaku kaiten. My reaction was to practice with jun kaiten, just as strongly, but it seemed very awkward. Here, if I interpret what I'm seeing correctly, shuto-uke does not depend as much on koshi no kaiten as, say, uchi-uke.

Extremely interesting, Sensei.

Finally someone shows this in a much more practical way Many people's bodies just don't twist the way some teach this.

Osu!! Natural karate - it is puzzling how much resistance one will find against well thought out waza like this example. :)

IMHO some really good comments on shuto. Thank you. This method, of not twisting excessively, is how I recall Kanazawa Sensei doing it. I also recall Asai Sensei doing an older version of shuto where both arms prepared high and to the side before travelling together in the same direction. This method can still be found in Gojushiho (Dai and Sho), when turning into kiba dachi. Although sadly these days the gedan shuto has mostly been altered, for what ever reason, to gedan haito.

Osu. Yes, I have been told a lot to twist fully to the side by various instructors in the 80s and 90s. I always come back to Asai sensei's influence though, which is the original way, and the way in which many other styles emphasize the technique. I could talk at length but this is the wrong format for that. Maybe we can share stories in the dojo one day?

@@richardamos3173 That would be fun for me, and a cure for insomnia for you. ;-)

Would have been helpful to have seen it used in the video more than once in the end. Especially when moving.

Fair point. I'm just making a brief comment about the common errors in this video though. There will be other, more dynamic videos coming soon.
