Richard Burton was a man carved out of granite with a heart of gold.

Burton was very complex, a fine intellectual, a great reader, and quite possibly the greatest actor our world has ever known.

Please don't judge a man because he drinks or smokes or whatever, as long as he never asks for help or assistance. This man only brought help and assistance, and how! Each time Burton answered to an interview (which he never asked for), he was true, because he didn't care of what the orthers think about him. And each word is so well measured, controlled, not for the others but for his own every day sake. A real true man, a real great actor and a wonderful writer. And his love to the english language is to be discovered yet by the future "specialists"...

What an adorable, charismatic man. My own father had a voice as close to this I have ever heard. My mother said to me once he should have been a broadcaster instead of into medicine. It makes me sad growing old and all these wonderful people have passed, I hope to a better place. ❤

he is definitely one of the smartest interviewees I have seen - he gives the interviewer what he wants, very generously, yet there is a kind of boundary hanging in the air, yet it is not his fear of being exposed or insulted, it is simply his class, and being himself..

He reminds me of my brother. He has that sharpness in his eyes, intelligent, self assured and knows himself to the core. Burton was 5'9, not 5'10 1/2. He use to wearvlifts or large heels.

He was a rare human being,generous and authentic. He help people and used his money to help others.

Richard Jenkins (Burton) KING OF WALES!

Richard Burton is my favourite hero & a hero of my imagination never replaced till now in my life. Good to hear his voice after a long time. Hope a hero like him ( I mean in movies) will appear on silver screen before I leave this world.

I'm so struck the more I listen to Richard Burton in interview snowadays, many of which I have seen over the years and some of which I have seen even recently" because of two books acquired over the past year since I received "THe Richard Burton Diaries" as a birthday present from Tim last year, which is fun in one way for me right at the get-go because a man born on 8 November gave on the next-day birthday of his friend on 9 November the diaries of a famous OTHER man born on 10 November! But, my God , he is smart, isn't he? Intelligent in a wonderful way in terms of vocabulary, ironic word choice, ability to create phrases that are just plain fun to lsten to!

He was such a wonderful human being.

I greatly admired Burton. A great actor, wonderful voice and nice man. It saddens me that he essentially killed himself through alcohol but no one is perfect. We all are flawed in some way. I like his humour and he seems honest (although not very self aware about his alcohol addiction). He frequently said he is not sure if he is alcoholic - that is a lack of insight. It doesn't matter whether you call it alcoholism, alcohol dependence or addiction - it doesn't matter what you call it, if alcohol is affecting you and your loved ones then it is a problem. But, I still admire him enormously.

Great man, no other remotely like him.

A fascinating interview. I hope that he repented of his sins before he passed. Each and every one of us is flawed,it is inescapable. Some are subject to a greater number of these weaknesses than others, but some are present in us all. Richard Burton was undoubtedly an immensely talented and charismatic man despite his shortcomings. Thank you for sharing this video.

It always amazes me how he's never confident about his looks, I sometimes wonder if that was a little bit modesty or that he just didn't see it. I think he probably meant it though.. I never saw an actor as good, as charismatic, and as attractive as him, he was amazing!

What a shame that he never lived to play LEAR. Burton is wonderful, and didn't really appreciate his own worth. There is no other remotely like him, as is said below.

He said he had lived dangerously but I think maybe a tad carelessly. Which was worse for him, the cigarettes or the liquor? Just loved his work. He was marvelous.

There is a mystical quality about him that doesn't have a name and is very rarely seen. He probably has as many male fans as female which is also unusual, and he defies categorization. I love him and i miss him and i didnt even know him. His voice does something to people and nobody quite understands what it does. But it is wonderful

In the same tiny Welsh village a young man wearing an over-sized coat and a large pair of working men's boots would say how he wanted to be an actor. Local people would call him "Little Richard" and this along with the sight of Burton's rolls Royce would make him determined to achieve what Burton failed to achieve namely an Oscar and a Knighthood. I am, of course, talking about Oscar winning actor Sir Anthony Hopkins. Yet I still feel that, unlike the latter, Richard Burton is the real Film Star.

It's interesting and odd that in another interview, in Budapest, he stated that money was extremely important to him. Here he states the opposite. But he was very generous toward his birth family, it seems.

Just finished reading his diaries for the second time, an immensely troubled man. The way he would speak to E and the kids, his own kids, I mean just a real bastard. Super depressing the way the diary plummets, from wild and interesting and lavish, to every post being "Booze. Again. Hope Elizabeth calls" Real sad.

Burton misspeaks when he said it had been 10 years since he played Hamlet on Broadway when he assumed the role in Equus. It was actually 12 years. He stopped playing Hamlet in 1964 and took Equus on in late 1976.

I don't think that Burton realized the irony when he said how he didn't want to play Macbeth because he didn't want to be dominated by a woman. I wonder if Lady Macbeth's first name is Elizabeth.

Oh, not all the "you abandoned the stage" questions again. I don't blame him for making movies. He got paid huge sums and made some remarkable ones. Some were flops because he had to do them to keep up E's jewels. Generous guy with a quick temper and awesome talent, don't you agree?

Kane have the stage presence, the phenomenal memory, the ability to command attention by clear diction, portraying intense emotions, etc...I think R.B. was generous not to snap back at Kane for a disrespectful and erroneous question. Had he see his Hamlet, Becket, Anthony, etc., etc...? R.B. has " done his bit" to rightly earn widespread acclaim for his stage work. There's a recording ( You Tube?) of the New York " Hamlet ", with minimal sets and costumes... Would Sir John Gielgud have been involved with anyone less than extremely competent? On a lighter note, there is a very entertaining " Lucy Show" (?) Where " Lucy Meets the Burtons". If you want to see flashes of rage , accompanied most of the time by a great sense of humour, seek it out , and enjoy ! 🤔🌠❤🌟😊🌈🇬🇧🌟

He comes across very confident and self assured. But behind closed door this magnificent actor tended towards a lot of insecurity, tantrums and endless petty jealousies. He even assaulted Brando severely becos he greeted Elizabeth with a big hug.,That’s how he behaved in his very long marriage to actress Elizabeth Taylor. I learned this by reading his published diaries and good biographies on Elizabeth Taylor. He liked to be the centre of attention, then inexplicably locked himself in rooms for a whole day and ignored his whole family. I love Burton but his character was very flawed. He was also very competitive with other actors. And a continual Cheater in relationships . He seemed to need the endless attention of other women. The extent of his outstanding acting can be seen in interviews like this. He comes off as completely humble and reasonable right? . But It doesn’t reveal any of his violence or a man who picked fights with Elizabeth in public. Or his utter and total dependence on alcohol. He actually destroyed his career to a degree with alcoholism and definitely his health. He certainly missed the opportunity to write the books he wanted too. He actually preferred poetry to making movies. He was unhappy Makin movies. His best quality was his generosity with money. And he understood humans and the human condition very deeply. It showed in his diaries clearly. And he was very funny too. But did he understand himself. Not really. Personally I think it’s more important to understand yourself in life than other people. It makes you a happy person. And easier to live with.

Most of his films were pretty bad and you can tell he’s using about 10% of his ability. That’s obvious if you hear his Hamlet recordings from the 50s. But “wine, women and song” were his destiny.

Burton was a wooden film actor who shouted far too much.

Burton reminds me so much of the good things about the latter half of the 20th century, basically until the 80's when the divisive lies of Reagan and Thatcher and their promotion of greed above all else destroyed so much of what was good about society.
