“You can know the name of that bird in all the languages of the world, but when you're finished, you'll know absolutely nothing whatever about the bird. You'll only know about humans in different places, and what they call the bird. ... I learned very early the difference between knowing the name of something and knowing something.” ~ R.P.F. Here's the way nature works. Why does it work that way? WE DON'T KNOW! And that's what's so exciting! That's why we keep probing nature to see how it works! This man's excitement is contagious.

That's one of the things I love about science. I'm just some schmuck. I don't know how to do calculus. I don't know proper lab protocols and I don't have access to a radio telescope or an electron microscope. I've never been on a dig, I've never even been to college but when we discover something new about the universe, I share in the thrill of discovery the same as any scientist. When I watch a documentary or read an article, I'm right there with him or her and I feel the eureka just as strongly as they do. We can all share that while they do all the hard work.

@@user-lw5oc1tt8k One could learn a lot just by reading and I have. But unless you're a real obsessed autodidact, there's no substitute for real training from someone with experience and a daily routine of disciplined study. It's important to stay humble and to keep that in mind. As much as we're able to learn from popular science outlets, that does not make us scientists or even close. What we tend to l;earn is the interesting stuff. But what's left out is a whole lot.

We were all like this, before school system made us hate science. School is all about preparing you to enter to the capitalist system to make money for the rich. Of course it is not fun. We never learned critical thinking in school anyway, it is not good for the owners.

School did not make him love science or anything, it was his father. His father put the love for science and understanding the world into his heart. Also he did not pursue an average school education, he considered exceptional thanks again to his childhood, again with his father. You can see the same thing with his sister too. One thing you must know is, the schools never thought him to criticize, his father taught him to dislike authority, and that's why he was a great scientist. If you force someone to study a topic without his/her own consent, without a meaningful goal, you make them hate that topic. And they tell students to study to find a job, study to get high grades, this is meaningless bullshit. And you produce disinterested "grown ups". Feynman had the love and his own consent to learn all, not for the grades or finding a job. Also, statistically some schools would be better than others, and some people would come out unharmed by the machinery, this does not mean the school system in general targets creating critical thinkers. This is not the case at all. It is just the opposite.

2:33 This idea is so profound to me. He's right, the universe around us doesn't have eyes to see the light. The Universe doesn't care about the light, it's just nuclear fusion doing its thing, But the light is there anyway and how beautiful it is to behold. And it's all really there, there's no point to it, it just is. How lucky are we to be able to comprehend such things.
