Maniac in a Suitcase
Giving away a prize to a lucky audience member, Rich reminisces about schoolday bags and realises how much work he has got to do to relearn his 11 old stand up shows for his insane attempt to do them all at the Leicester Square Theatre in August and September. His guest is a man who has done Chekov, Dickens and Celebrity Juice, Johnny Vegas.
It’s a truly fascinating discussion about the duality of the stand up and where a Johnny ends and Michael Pennington begins. Michael discusses the lengths that Johnny would push him to and his total commitment to being a dog on stage, whether contentment and success mean the death of the character, how to make your own audience out of balloons, why he got the worst degree in his year at University and how he got his revenge, how Monkey has clung to his back like a monkey and the funniest sex show in history. It’s really good.

Fantastic interview. Johnny Vegas/Michael Pennington has such a talent for being at once raucously funny and debauched and incredibly sensitive all at the same time. Its a shame so few people have bothered to pay attention for more than 5 minutes to realize Johnny is actually a brilliant performance and not just some rambling drunk having a breakdown, even if that line is blurred. So many people are apt to write Johnny off on first appearances, but listening to Michael talk for 5 minutes its obvious what a razor sharp mind he has.

This was absolutely wonderful to watch. So honest, sometimes tragic, and really funny, too. I'd genuinely love to see Michael Pennington do a show about Johnny Vegas and all the emotional issues he had with the character. He could call it "Fear and Loathing in Johnny Vegas". (You're welcome.) Going to watch this through again. Brilliant.

Funny, I just said exactly the same things sharing it on Facebook. I love them all, but this is Herring's best interview by a mile, leaving perfect space for his thinking and freewheeling. Much more interest in MP after watching this, I never really knew Vegas was a character. So odd, like listening to a schizophrenic.

I knew Johnny/Michael briefly during his sojourns in Ireland during the '90s/20s... (Very nice, kind bloke, totally devoid of any obvious ego, which is unusual with comedians... And, for a lot of performers, ego is a necessary 'tool' to channel a certain energy.) Johnny, as I remember him, suffered really seriously from pre-stage nerves. He was often terrified before going on... Any indication of that vanished once he stepped onto a stage. Indeed, I thought he used that 'nervous energy' in a very unique way. (I think the heavy drinking, a trait we shared, was an attempt to calm his nervousness more than anything else.) He seems over that now? Brilliant to see him here in a great interview by RH. xx SF

Johnny has something that a few comedians don't or didn't seem to have. And that is an awareness of where 'the line'actually is. Doing offensive things on stage that only impact on yourself, is never going to be anywhere near as career fatal as abusing someone else for laughs. However funny that joke may be. Frankie Boyle and Julian Clary take note.

In about 1999, at The Kilkenny Cat Laughs festival, my then (serious!) girlfriend and I had a huge row. Drink was involved. I returned to our hotel and went to bed. The next morning I awoke alone. FRANTIC with worry as to where she was, I phoned, panicked now, to no reply. Past noon, she, rather disheveled, returned, explaining that she had spent the night with Mr Pennington. "Nothing happened," she explained. I believed her. But that Christmas Eve, at my house, she got a call from Mr Vegas. Just a Happy Christmas call, she said. Makes you wonder... xx SF
