Richard Neher presented findings and successes of genome-based surveillance of SARS CoV-2 and influenza. He addressed the dynamics of pathogen change and transformation and the emergence and spread of new virus variants, including those with special characteristics (VOC; "immune escape"). In his presentation, he therefore went on to explain how it is possible to identify and predict why certain variants spread more successfully and how this can largely be deduced or at least associated from genome data.
The Robert Koch Colloquium is an annual interdisciplinary lecture series, each year focusing on one specific innovative public health topic, such as Burden of Disease (2019), Public Health Surveillance (2021), Climate Change and Public Health (2022), and Social Inequities in Health (2023).
