@Merennulli
@Merennulli Жыл бұрын
@@Ami-jc2oo The story was basically that he found out the one whose arrow had pierced him was a child and pardoned him. It's been long enough that I don't remember if the purse was mentioned, but it was used as an example of Richard's character. It was a college history class. 8th grade I recall covering his participation in the Crusades and the ransom, but not detail of his death. 11th grade I took world history and it was very brief with few anecdotes. College was when I got to take a wider array of history classes for my electives and get more detail. It's possible the teacher didn't know what happened to the boy, or he didn't deem it relevant to the point he was making about Richard. It definitely wasn't sheltering us, though. It was after covering the problem of Richard's absenteeism.

While an interesting person, I never understood the obsession with Richard I. He barely spent time ruling England and basically used the country only to fund his war efforts. He also never tried for an heir, leaving his brother John to rule despite the fact that he wasn’t very competent.

Realistically this is like the most in character way for the Lionheart to go out. Just overconfidence doing something mundane. He was a great warrior, but goddamn did he have a big ego

And yet..it could be worse. Both the fictional and real life fates of his younger brother weren't too glorious. John was the inspiration for Prince John of Robin Hood, which didn't have the best ending for him..and in real life, he died of dysentery while out on a convoy. Yep, the poor bastard shat himself to death while out of the comfort of home. Considering his real life death is compounded by the fictional story and negative publicity that rose around him, ignoring the positive qualities he held until completely vilified; it wasn't the best end. I guess even with his embarrassing death, Henry still came out on top again..the kid killed monarch who let his guard down and became gangrenous is remembered as the lionhearted while John is sung about as the phony king of England by children and cartoon foxes alike!

I've read several accounts of this and none of them mentioned a kid deflecting crossbow bolts with a frying pan, also Richard didn't come to watch he was leading an attack on the Castle which he as King technically wasn't supposed to do and was shot in the throat. He subsequently died several days later but not before pardoning the kid who shot him in the throat. The kid was then yes supposedly flayed alive against Richards last dying wish.

I like to think the knights just reported that they flayed the kid alive so people back home wouldn’t be pissed at them.

I remember my university medieval history book hating on Richard and i must say i don't disagree. Dude basically used his country to found his crazy adventures and was all in all a terrible ruler and a mediocre leader, considering how the Crusade failed its objective at reconquering Jerusalem. Also, it's pretty dumb to fight on the first line of a battle.

Didn’t that grandma’s family get a pension or something for the entire remainder of the Venetian Republic’s existence for that? Edit: so some sources I found said she was rewarded (at her request) with the perpetual freezing of her rent, and the right to fly the flag of Venice’s patron Saint during the feast day of some other Saint.
