Tucker and Merrill always gave terrific performances. Tucker sang about 740 operatic performances at the Met alone, during his 30 years, with only 2 cancellations. He sang across a wide variety of roles from lyric to spinto dramatic. His Una Furtiva Lagrima as well as the Nessun Dorma sound terrific. R.T. still sounded youthful in his late 50s. Merrill was probably thee most popular American Baritone ever, singing with almost every great tenor during his time at the Met. . To this day the The NY Yankees still play his God Bless America in the 7th inning at every home game. We were fortunate to have them, but unfortunately it seems we will never hear or see a duo like this again.R.I.P.

Quite a performance & one (some enjoyably over the top vocal moments included) that will not be heard these days. One must also remember that both of these fellas had by this time (1972) been singing superbly (stylistic subtlety’s frequently aside) for some 30 years already. Imagine having tenors like Tucker & Corelli around now!) Guilty pleasures, for me anyway, abound: Merrill‘s always thrilling FINALMENTE in the third FORZA duet & Tucker‘s vibrant NESSUN DORMA which really rivals Corelli‘s, on the occasion heard here. Neither Merrill or Tucker were exactly vivid stage personalities or known for their characterizations but, man, they could deliver memorable vocal moments seldom heard from baritones or tenors now.

They did a few of these concerts. In preparation for the famous Carnegie Hall concert the following year. Maybe 2 or 3, all in the New York area.

They did one early at the big Shrine Auditorium in LA Calif. in 1971, another concert they did, I did attend, just a few Months after the NYC. Jan. 1973 Carnegie hall concert, that was at the great old Chicago Auditorium theater, it was in May, 1973. of course some others..

Yes. I think one of the first was in L.A. Calif. in 1971 .
