The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

He sings it in lower tonal than it was written for tenor,but anyway sounds great!

Merrill wisely transposed this tenor aria down a full tone. He sang and acted it well.

In original key, it goes to A. Technically very singable by an operatic baritone.

@@philbertchow5425 singable, I wouldn’t call it VERY singable. Tessitura is much higher than any baritone aria. And Merrill despite his incredible high Gs was not known for great ability his upper range.

@@boundary2580 IDK I’m a pretty average baritone learning operatic rep and I can just barely sing it. And I’m nobody special. Surely a pro baritone could?

@@boundary2580 I have no problem singing it in the key he sings it here. It’s somewhat harder in the original key going to A so I’m sure he could.

@@philbertchow5425 probably because you're a badly trained tenor.......like jesus christ the amount of mediocre tenors that try to humble brag about being "baritones" that can do this or that today is just wild. You also need to understand that hitting a note is different than singing it in elite operatic technique. Singing is not simply about hitting notes.

Have you searched KZfaq for Jan Peerce? There are literally hundreds of songs, albums and live performances..

@@jong0000 I search frequently. There are hundreds of songs, but not as many live television performances. There could be a lot more. I'm a big fan and the only Sullivan performance available so far is "Serenade" which was absolutely fantastic. I would very much like to see all his Sullivan appearances, as would any fan of any singer they appreciate.

@@jong0000 Richard Tucker sang the aria on this show, for Ed Sullivan in 1970 at age 56, also very fine. This was great and he is a baritone of course, singing this tenor aria in Baritone key naturally .

It is nice hearing a baritone perform this aria. I think you can see some of difference in temperament between a tenor and a baritone. Spinto and Dramatic tenors especially tend to have a very aggressive sound, baritones in general just sound more mellow.

there are much more explosive material that make a baritone sound more aggressive. that's not an inherent difference.

Merrill met Roberta Peters on the Ed Sullivan show. (Surprisingly not at the MET.) Pretty soon Roberta showed Ed her engagement ring on a broadcast in 1952. They soon married, but divorced the same year. Just incompatible I guess because they remained friends afterward. And that is tonight's "Inside Edition" 😎.

She said she had fallen in love with his voice, but I guess they found their personalities were not as compatible.

@@TomElvisSmith To their credit, there seemed to be no public spat, courtroom drama or tell all books like there would be today. He was 13 yrs older and she apparently was just dazzled by getting such attention from a big star. They had very similar careers and both died at 87. "Bert" and Robert even had the same name!

From what I understand, they were only married for ten WEEKS. Mr. Merrill mentioned in his book that they were way too hasty and that the only things they had in common were that they were both singers and both Jewish. Later I heard that her family didn't like him for whatever reason and apparently talked her out of it. Anyway it seems they did most of their work together after the marriage was over.

This show was for the masses. Obviously, the people in the audience do not understand what the aria and the opera were about because some are laughing and grinning, it makes no sense. In this Aria he has found out that his wife Colombina has betrayed him with Arlecchino another performer in the troop. He is in serious emitional pain. The aria is for a dramatic tenor not for a baritone. Here Rober Merrill using it as a performance piece; he would never do the role of Pagliacci (Pierrot) in an opera house but he did the role of Tonio.

I have to make amends for heavily criticizing R. Merrill. Thing is, there's a version on YT of "Sono il factotum della città"... movie version I think, which is really bad. Forgetting that particular piece, he definitely had an extraordinary voice and was a great performer.

He is one of my favorite baritones. A baritone with a tenor ring is hard to come by.

@@debbievinti23 His “Pearlfisher’s” duet with Jussi Bjorling is the golden standard by which all others are judged. It is phenomenal. And yes, that kid from Brooklyn who loved baseball grew up to have a magnificent voice. Cheers
