Richard, I appreciate how you have sought insight into a place to live in Nairobi, etc, and encourage you to do the same with other issues that arise (like your experience with Kenya Power’s meter and renting the motorbike). You’ll find that there is a community of foreigners here who have tackled the obstacles related to differences between North American living and living in Kenya and can advise you. For example, with the token meter, a local knows from experience that you have to keep it plugged in to monitor your usage so you don’t run out of tokens but may not know that YOU don’t know that so won’t say anything about it. If you seek out the experiential wisdom gained by a foreigner however, they can share strategies to adapt to the lifestyle here that have a basis in understanding of what is normal to North Americans and how it’s different here. I’ve been living in Kenya (with trips home for immigration purposes like you describe) since 2016 and have gained a lot of understanding about society here that is different than my life in Canada. For example, the motorbike provider asking for you to cover their transport to come to you. That’s normal here. Even within a family, members may request assistance for transport to come and visit. Especially if there is a mzungu that is inviting them. And despite the time that I’ve been here there are many mzungus who have been here even longer and have more knowledge. Seek them out to learn from them as you seek out locals to learn from. It will expand your overall understanding. Kind regards.

Wow, thank you so very much for your very thoughtful message. I agree that I should reach out to others who have migrated from other countries to see how they have adjusted. Let the areas of adjustment. I have to say that my new place is pretty close to perfection for what I need. Once the internet gets straighten out, it will be perfect. All in all, I wouldn't change a single experience I've had here in Kenya. I've grown with every experience.

Pole for your experience. Love that you take it as a learning experience. It must be real character development for Cuse as well. I go with the group that recommends that you torch the bike 😂 or advise the owner to sell it as scrap. It's a harzard and should never be on any street.

It is more complicated than you think. But long story short, I have no connections for remote work. I suggest that you market yourself as a consultant and allign yourself with a consulting company. Many U.S companies hire consulting companies from all over but they wouldn't likely hire just a single person from Kenya unless they are setup to do business in Kenya. So if you have skills, align yourself with a consulting company who would be able to funnel work to you.
