Today I am with Harriet and Lola in Shropshire exploring the remains of a great house on a site has been a dwelling since Saxon times.
Moreton Corbet Castle is an English Heritage property located near the village of Moreton Corbet, Shropshire, England, 8 miles northeast of Shrewsbury. It is a Grade I listed building. The ruins are from two different eras: a medieval stronghold and an Elizabethan era manor house. The buildings have been out of use since the 18th century.

Gosh that place looked huge! I though Cowdray was big, but this is more Hampton Court size. Great to see Harriet and Lola. The Shropshire team together again!

Thank you Mr Vobes for exploring this place of fantastic interest. I am glad you really enjoyed it. I am not religious in any sense but it would be superb if you could visit some undiscovered churches in the near vicinity. I seem to remember being able to view Stanton Church from the ruins when I was a Child, however I cannot do so now. All the best to you, thank you again.

You’re inspiring us! Not only did we go up Grinshill the other day, we visited here today. It looks different now as they have left a lot of the grass around to grow wild and it’s filled with cow parsley, long grasses and wild flowers. Really lovely.

I’ve been doing a lot of genealogy on my own family and my ancestor back about 22 generations where of the Corbet family in Moreton. Roughly around 1300-1400 is how far I was able to trace back with the Corbets.

Our name changed from Villmere to Corbeau into Corbett/Corbet due to war and the outcasting of the Acadians in Canada My uncle had the odd hobby of the family tree Pre Internet actual writing letters to Churches and city halls etc And had the history to 1622. Working with that i dated to 1458 confirmed Past that leads to the Corbet family gathering forces for William to the Throne And fighting Harold ...In trade, the Corbets Along with other families would become pretty much tax collectors As "Barons" with the Title Land was also given from what i know islands like Britanny Gurnesy ect And some English countryside

I am also a direct Corbet descendant and have traced the line back to 1087 to Roger Fitz Corbet, and there is actually more going even farther but am still doing my research so there is still more to find. Is a very amazing family and part of English history.

Reminds me of Kirby Hall in Northants, which is also a vast ruined Elizabethan mansion. (From memory, a bit more of it survives. Some rooms even have roofs!)

It's actually two castles - there's the immense shell of the stately home, and there's the 12-13th century keep behind it, with the two separated by a courtyard. That's why the stonework is so different from one side of the site to the other: blocky, square rubble-filled walls designed to withstand siege, versus elegant Elizabethan crafted stone and huge windows on the other. Also, did the helicopters bother you? They were buzzing like locusts when I visited :D
@RichardVobes
@RichardVobes 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the clarification Elenna. Luckily we avoid the helicopters - just had local kids climbing on the monument.
