Grew up in Pittsburgh, lived through the glory years of the Steelers, Franco was magical, deceptively faster than a big man should be, always made the corner and picked up big yards. The the Pgh. airport has a sculpture of him snatching the football inches from the ground. He will live in the memories of Steeler fans forever. RIP Franco.

Funny thing: the statue in the airport was supposed to only be temporary. However, it proved to be so popular that they have left it up indefinitely. Under these circumstances, I doubt it will coming down anytime soon. I hope it stays up forever in the city I love.

Born in Pittsburgh in 1969. The 70s were great for football and baseball. I even loved my bottom feeding Penguins. But there is no doubt that the Steelers gave hope and pride to the most depressed city in America. Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania embodies the love of sport and the opportunity sports has given our sons. Rich,, Thanks for your words about Franco and Pittsburgh. Yours is the best I've heard yet.

Great tribute. As a Texan who grew up in the 70s as an Oiler and Cowboys fan, I absolutely hated the Steelers as a team. But no one could hate Franco Harris. I loved watching his combination of speed, fluidity, and power, even when it was to the detriment of the teams I loved. A class act who deserves every tribute and memorial honoring him.

Thank you for your words. True football fans appreciate excellence, regardless of the team a player plays for, and Franco was that, excellent! We all loved him. I grew up in Pittsburgh, but moved to NYC in 1975, so l never had the chance to meet him. However, since many Steelers games were televised nationally, l got to see them play often. Franco is one of those quality people l would love to have met, in my lifetime.

One of the most famous franchises? Once, I was speaking with a man from Moldova. I couldn't unstand much of what he was saying, but I did understand when he asked me where I was from. I told him I came from a city called Pittsburgh in the state of Pennsylvania. I asked him if he had heard of this small city in Appalachia. Immediately, his eyes widened, and before I could say more, he blurted out, "STEELERS!".

Born in Brooklyn, live in Los Angeles, and I've been a Steeler fan for 51 of my 59 years. At eight years old, I thought the Steelers had the best uniforms in the NFL, so they became my favorite team. The following year, way after drafting Franco, the Steelers drafted quarterback Joe Gilliam in the late rounds. Joe Gilliam was Black. I had never seen a Black quarterback in the NFL before. That whole season, I looked...didn't see another one. This was 1972, so, to me and many others, this was a big deal. The Pittsburgh Steelers have always been a different team to me. In my 51-year residency in Steeler Nation, we've had three head coaches. *THREE.* Franco, Bradshaw, Greene, Swann, Stallworth, Blount, Lambert, Ham, Bleier, Webster, and I could name many others who were not just stars, but football legends. The "Immaculate Reception" started it all, but for an eight-year-old kid in Brooklyn, the story began a little earlier than that. Rest in power, Franco, and thank you from me and from a grateful Steeler Nation...

This is a devastating news. Franco Harris was one of my favorite players in the Great Pittsburgh Steelers teams of 1970s from his “Immaculate Reception” to scoring the only Touch Down in the Steelers first Super Bowl (IX), to scoring TDS in Super Bowls XIII and XIV. He along with “Mean” Joe Greene, Terry Bradshaw, Jack Lambert, Mel Blount, Lynn Swann, John Stalllworth, Rockey Bleier, Mike Webster, LC Greenwood and his Golden Shoes and Coach Chuck Noll were heroes of the Steel City. That team defined and era. My condolences to his family. He was a great one. May he Rest in Peace.
