The Good, The Bad & The Rugby

Күн бұрын

Richie McCaw sets a high bar for the new year as our first guest in 2022. He relives many of the memorable moments from his stellar career, and reveals how the best players develop the mentality and resilience to not only get to the top but also stay there. Back-to-back World Cup wins as captain of the All Blacks, helicopter rescues after the earthquake in 2016 and his newfound passion for adventure racing are just some of the topics that get Hask giddy.

My Goat after watching rugby for 50 years. His super power was his excellence of performance over a very long time. He debuted with a Man of the match performance against Ireland in Dublin then 14 years later he is lifting his second RWC as captain. Im not sure you will ever see a rugby career to equal his achievements in the All Black jersey.

I've just found out why this man has such an aura. I watched his rugby for years through gritted teeth at how good he was (not being a AB fan" just an admirer) (England) at how much influence, drive and determination he has. if their ever was a person to aspire to it would be Richie McCaw. A leader, a father and a brother, a man who has dusted off the bad times addressed difficult questions and learnt lessons from them and through taking himself to both mental and physical limit, improved where so many would shy away. you are rightly an icon for not only rugby but also life and drive. so extraordinarily unordinary but in the same sentence ordinary and humble. Amazing interview and amazing guy.

I was there in 2001 for his debut in Lansdowne Road v Ireland. Incredible game it was with Ireland roaring to a lead and then Lomu and co roared back. Aaron Mauger made his debut and Chris Jack as well I think. The post game talk among Irish fans, besides Lomu, was about McCaw and what a debut it was. We knew we had seen something special that day.

When he started, mental health was something for the fringes on Kiwi society. He's helped do a lot for that alone. Fab pod guys, really worth listening to.

It was such a treat watching McCaw/Carter. The 09 Boks and 15 ABs were the greatest sides I’ve seen. McCaw had that Jordanesque mentality that just refused to lose. I thought Carter could take over a test, but McCaw had the leadership mentality and rugby IQ that was irreplaceable. Matfield played a similar role for the Boks.

23.50. When Ritchie was speaking to this point it took me back to a question he answered at the end of the pool stage in 2015. The AB’s had not played that well leading into the knockouts and Ritchie made a comment after the Tonga match that all of the problems they were facing were fixable. The next week they went out and played an almost perfect match against France and fin spanked them. They had the same fitness, strength and skills in the Tonga game but the performance level in the French game was at another level.

Gents the questions that you ask all your guest the inside of each individual their throughs selecting the questions to learn wisdom from others knowledge to empower others, key words balance. Guys thank you appreciate these interviews. It interesting watching on TV the 1 question on this programme, why is the All Blacks most successful over long jeopardy it was mentioned to be humbled clean up in the changing room of the seniors players. The one saying you are only good as your last game the teams eg Italy, United States to nations to be playing against Goliath of the game. The question I have is there are teams like the Bok, Enland, France, Australia, Scotland Wales Ireland in recent times that they are all closing the gap or do you see that gap still not close enough to be closed and how much more can the AB evolved themselves to keep ahead of the competition and maintain that gap that the question will that gap ever come close enough in the future.

Biggest thing for me was how NZ would never ever give up. Even if losing in 79th minute they would still have utter belief they would win and hence often did. They were/are obviously a fantastic rugby team but the mental edge set them apart. On the actual interview, it was a bit too much of a love in and not enough proper questions like why hasn't he gone into coaching, did he ever disagree with team mates/coaches. What about opponents, who did he rate/not rate etc etc. Bit more content less fluff be good.

Haskell mentions that "humble, tall poppy" stereotype every time an All Black appears. Seems pretty accurate though. Would like to have seen more questions about his biggest opponents, toughest matches etc
