They could ballet dance, tap dance, ballroom dance and freestyle dance and all on ice and all with amazing innovation and perfect sychronicity - never before and never since has there been any couple like them and I just feel so lucky that I ever saw them. As are we all.

I've been reading their autobiography. Perhaps they weren't "in love," however, they were so close and always had deep respect for one another. A loving relationship of another kind. The most touching comment I ever heard was when Chris was asked what he thought about Jayne, and he answered, "she is everything I want her to be." That says it all, folks. Sigh.
@MeeMawTx Жыл бұрын
I have listened to Chris' statement, made during the Piers Morgan Life Stories interview. When I replayed it, I noticed something which could have even more significance. Chris' actual words were, "um, and, and it's gonna sound cheesy, but, in my eyes, she is everything I want, want her to be. She is." It's almost as if he was going to stop the sentence after the first "want". However, he swiftly realized saying only those words would leave the impression that Jayne is basically the only woman he wants, his Dulcinea. Therefore, he created the remainder of the sentence, "want her to be" in order to lessen that suggestion. Either way, it's highly obvious that Jayne is incredibly important to him.

What a pity television technology was still so primitive. One forgets in this age of digital/ high definition etc. Something that could have captured properly these two genius'. Watching this again after nearly 30 years I am moved to tears again at the beauty, brilliant concept and perfection of these two people. And after a lifetime lived I wondered now what forces in the Universe and on this planet had to manifest to bring these two people together and awaken their genius. Christopher a policeman. The thought always boggled my mind and still does. Much I regret of life but am grateful that I lived the moments as they came of these two wonderful, beautiful and talented people. Thank you for this post.

You are right about the technology: it's hard to believe that there just *is* nothing more than SD (less than 500 lines vertically, mostly less than 400) of these two. Did no agency - broadcasting or otherwise - ever *film* any of their performances in that era?

@@dorvilltean3649 Thanks for the info.; I guess it will become available at some point, though maybe not until his will. Not too bothered about Bolero, actually: it's great of course, but I much prefer some of their earlier routines - the white-with-blue-trim one (Barnum I think - the one thes comments are under), and the gold one. (Now off to follow Debbie Thomas's link to see if I've got it - assuming I can get it back, KZfaq having rearranged this screen so I can't see the link!)

I'd always loved Mack & Mabel, but the first time I saw them perform I Won't Send Roses on TV was when they closed the Winter Olympics gala in 1984, a few days after they had won the gold medal. Along with much of the country I was still on a high following their triumph with Bolero and then, after performing Barnum as their main exhibition number, they came back onto the ice and just broke my heart with I Won't Send Roses. I had to go out shortly afterwards and I remember walking out of the door still in tears!

It was the famous religious between Mack Sennett, a silent movie film director and Mabel ? An actress, she loved him very much but alas, not returned fully by Mack, I believe they never married and went their own ways, quite poignant really. Jane and Christopher said they did the routine based on this story, romantic...

Jayne was a pairs skater before dancing with Chris. She has a strong core due to that and this allowed her to be able to do things Chris created. At the same time, they both love skating so much and understand that in each other. They are both only child in the family which gives them another thing similar in their lives. They would do anything to be able to skate.

Why on earth did they not marry...? Many duos made it work and they were obviously in love. And then too did we ever see Chris’s two boys all grown up, I’ll bet they look a lot like Chris. And Jayne, never saw your kids either grown up.your fans love you , you know , we will never see you in person, couldn’t we see the kids grown up. Of course you have had way too little privacy and you deserve it but didn’t you know we would love you, all you gave us , the beautiful routines, the funny moments on and off ice. You are our heroes. Don’t grow old without us..you are so much a part of my life...the happy parts!

They were never a couple. The fact that you thought they were "obviously in love" is actually testament to how good they were at telling a story on ice, but like all acting performances, it wasn't real. And I think they made the right decision keeping their respective spouses and children from the spotlight - Jayne and Chris chose to be in the public eye but their families didn't, so they were right to protect them. Jayne and Chris also had a right to relax in private with their families when the arena lights went off, it's not fair to expect them to be "on" 24/7.
