Joe & Nic's Road Trip

2 жыл бұрын

We began this adventure in Charleston, WV in a major snowstorm. We drove across the Appalachians in the ice and snow, finally arriving in chilly Richmond, VA hours later. The next day was sunny, but cold. I visited historic St John's Church, where Patrick Henry gave is inspirational "Give me liberty or give me death!" to an audience that included George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. It was enough to motivate the colonists to form their own army, with the intent on breaking free from England. I also explored downtown, and together we visited the state capital building.
We stayed at the Best Western Plus Governor's Inn

Love seeing my city showcased. However it should be noted, the james runs into the Chesapeake bay not the Mississippi. Also that was a portrait of Governor Ralph Northam. He was governor just before Youngkin.

While y'all were driving in the beautiful snow, my stomach was in knots. Especially on those narrow back roads. What an adventure. When you toured the church, a wave of appreciation to those men washed over me. People need to visit Richmond. I've ever been but would love to Like others said, this was one of your best videos. I enjoyed the chit chat instead of the music. You do know that you seem like a friend to your regular viewers.

Love the video. I was born & raised in Va. Back in the 80's I was an ambulance attendant for RVA. I know that city well. 12:58 the blds were old tobacco warehouses. That area was called Tobacco Row. The El. had Dock St. underneath it. We used to call that "Little Chiago". 13:59 you're in Manchester. That used to be an independent city from RVA. When RVA annexed it, they called "Dog Town". They used to think that the residents of Manchester were dogs. 14:26 The 14th St. Mayos Bridge. 31:20 Looks like Church Hill. In the 80's it was a dump & a high crime & murder area. I knew one of the investors & they started to buy up all the houses & refurb them. I guess they were trying to restore Church Hill back to its former glory days. 30:40 MCV/VCU hospital. There used to be a bunch of hospitals in that area, they merged them all into one. Thanks for sharing, now you got me homesick. LOL.

Also Virginia Union University. Richmond Community Hospital, the one and only Hospital in the state for African Americans, it now is a building on the grounds of Virginia Union University. Virginia Union is a school started by the Black Baptists in the State Virginia. The first African slaves landed in Jamestown Va not to far down the river in 1619.

Loved the drive in the snow! I grew up in the southern part of WV. Six inches of snow was kind of typical for winters there, but once in a while, we would get up to 3 feet of snow. Sledding was epic when I was a kid…always a big hill somewhere to sled down. So beautiful! And I loved the tour of Richmond. I’ve been past Richmond, but never ventured downtown. The church was beautiful! This makes me want to take a Richmond tour. Thanks for the wonderful videos! 😀

Good morning, just watched this for the first time. If you ever get back to Richmond you must do it during the summer and visit the church on a Sunday. Between Memorial and Labor Days there are reenactments of the Virginia convention the speech was given at. It last about an hour with both arguments given and of course the grand finale. The actors sit in the church pew while the program is going on and speak from those spots. George Washington sat directly behind me and John Henry Lee was a couple of rows in front. There are videos available on youtube of the reenactment. Check it out, it is well worth it.

Re: Little roads. I abhor and detest interstates and avoid them at all costs. But there are times there are no options. On interstates you make time, but see nothing. The same FF joints, same gas stations, same motels at exits. Miss a turn and have to go miles and miles before you can turn around. On old roads you pass through towns, see things. When I travel I'm in no hurry. I made an around the country trip in '19 from WV to NY, to Colorado and back (about 19 states) and on interstates only a fraction of the time. I would do it again in a heart beat.

@johnnyboy9931
@johnnyboy9931 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the James River flows into the Chesapeake Bay. The fall line at Richmond is where the James falls off of the Piedmont onto the Coastal Plain and becomes a tidal river. The Kanawha (Kuh-na'-wuh) River flows into the Mississippi via the Ohio River.
@eaglescout1984
@eaglescout1984 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, to add to this there was a _plan_ to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico through waterways, know as the James River and Kanawha Canal. The James River served as the waterway to the Atlantic and the Kanawha River served as the waterway to the Gulf. Eventually, they were going to connect the two through the terrain of the Allegheny Mountains, but they initially built canals just to bypass rough parts of each river and used overland methods to get between them (the James River and Kanawha Turnpike). But before they could finish a waterway to connect the rivers, trains became the dominant form of transportation and the canal was ultimately abandoned.

Richmond , VA was the capital of the Confederate States of America. Robert E. Lee and the Confederates fought desperately against Ulysses Grant and the Union Army to hold on to Richmond at the end of the Civil War. Lee surrendered to Grant at the Appomattox Court House outside of Petersburg, VA

now the iconic statue of Lee and his horse on Monument Ave are no more. I walked around that statue hundreds of times in the 40's and 50's never contemplating that Lee was a traitor to the Union and went against his oath to the Union. If he had remained true to the Union thousands of lives would have been saved. Just my opinion. He was considered a God to the Virginians when I was growing up.

Oil has that price according to your Dollar because when your dollar goes up in price, we pay others who don't have dollars 4 liters will cost about 7.22 dollars so if you think your politicians decide the price then it doesn't fit it is also oil countries that determine how much supply of oil it's the same with whiskey, those who make them decide how many bottles will be on offer, but they can't make it go around (Make Money)

Your amazing countries weather always baffles me when compared to UK weather. Almost everybody would agree the USA has better weather than the UK like northerly cities like new york an chicago get 100 degree weather in summer but also gets sometimes several feet of snow in winter. In the UK im in the north west and we haven't had over 2 inches of snow in one go for over a decade and if a summer day exceeds 80 degrees then people start dying an moaning its too hot an its a heatwave if it's hot for over 3 days running haha. Yous even get snow in desert cities like Phoenix I think ive seen. I'd still rather be in your country with ye wacky weather any day over grey an boring england

I'm not sure the story on that cross, if it's original or not. But I can assure you it was not placed in Richmond in 1609. That was the year they founded the Jamestown colony, much further down river near present day Williamsburg. So, if that cross is original, it was moved there from Jamestown. But, it's also likely that it's a newer cross meant to commemorate the founding of the Jamestown colony in 1609.
@jgwood10
@jgwood10 Жыл бұрын
The cross was originally placed at the fall line of the James River in 1607 by Christopher Newport and John Smith to claim the territory for King James I. They then traveled up the James to where they founded Jamestown the same year. Get your facts straight.
