THE greatest female skater EVER. It annoys me when people say her artistry was not good. Artistry is not about flailing your arms around, it also includes style and flow and Midori has a great style. That position in her layback spin was just gorgeous.
@no-hl4sv2 жыл бұрын
So true. Thanks for saying that. I am also annoyed with that narrative. She is the greatest female jumper, no room for doubt, even among male skaters, she could be one of the best of all time. Also, she had her own artistry, which is genuine and organic. Her spin was pretty, she recognized every single note in her steps, she punctuated her jumps to the rhythm of music.

She did, but she didn’t have it from the beginning. It came with time, with maturity and with experience
I was very young at this time, but I will never forget watching this performance live and the emotion I felt that day.

Nobody has ever skated with this much speed and reckless abandon while at the same time being completely secure. She controls nothing on her takeoffs. Momentum is her friend. Her ice coverage in the air is better than anybody in history. She goes so high and jumps so far that her rotation speed almost looks like it's in slow motion leading to completely secure landings. 32 years later and I still can't believe what I'm seeing every time I watch this.
@victoriagill3337 Жыл бұрын
That she actually over rotated the 3A and had to fight to hang onto it is testament to that
Even now (2016) "I have never seen a lady skate like this ever"! Amazing! 今でも、「こんな風に滑る女、見た事ない」!驚異的!

THE BEST FEMALE FIGURE SKATER OF ALL TIME... MY FAVORITE OF ALL TIME..... HANDS DOWN... AT LEAST IN THE TECHNICAL PART... ANYONE WHO WOULD ARGUE ARE MORONS. 26 YEARS LATER, AND STILL UNMATCHED. MY GOD, THE POWER, GUTS, AND FORCE OF THIS WOMAN IS TRULY UNBELIEVABLE.. TYPHOON MIDORI!!!
Midori was the best female jumper ever. that triple axel was HUGE and the speed she had across the ice was unreal. that's what allows her to land triple jumps effortlessly. especially that triple toe-triple toe combination.

+Troy Turner I think she is one of the best. And she makes ALL of the current crop of female skaters look like students.

Vette gaddia I agree. She would shit on everyone today. She had transitions and more difficult technical elements than those of today's skaters. Her technical marks would be through the roof!
@vettegaddia62348 жыл бұрын
Troy Turner Of course, Ito had the best triple axel of all the female skaters who ever lived. But she also had the old World style of artistry that we do not see from most of the top skaters today. Technical skaters of her day knew they can not win a World class championship without artistry.
she is the best skater in women FS history. people never realize people's mistake judgement however people looking back to try to figure it out who is the best. then people will realize she is the one. hall of flame the legend of skate. even now 2014 we never meet woman like her such a triple 6 types complete in human history

I saw her skate live with the Campbell's Soup/Tom Collins Tour in the 1980s. The video doesn't really convey the speed she would have on the ice. In my opinion, the best female jumper of all time. Not only did she have speed, but she had tremendous height and distance with her jumps. It was unbelievable seeing her skate live.

If she skated today, her GOEs would be obnoxiously high. And with good reason. She doesnt miss a damn thing & everything is done with finesse, force, power, speed and most of all: a joy and passion for skating.
@trevorjohnson29908 жыл бұрын
An utterly seminal performance! She literally would have beaten Kurt Browning's 1989 WC LP (he never even attempted a Lutz, 2-footed his quad, did not complete his 1st triple Axel and I swear his combination looks like a double-triple...but, for the sake of argument, give him full credit). She landed 6 different triples and since the toe loop is the easiest . . . she did two in combination . . . for a total of 7 beautifully executed jumps. A Master class demonstration! The Americans (& British) always downplayed Midori's greatness - largely because she competed against (initially) Jill Trenary and Kristi Yamaguchi. It was very unfortunate because she was the singular female figure that elevated figure skating to an ATHLETIC sport on a world stage. It was so very sad when the sport didn't embrace her athletic brilliance - even at the 1988 Olympics - she landed 7 triples, 2 in combination - one of the finest performances I've ever seen (flawless!!) and all the commentators talked about (both American and British) was her lack of artistry, RIDICULOUS!!!! She was sheer brilliance! A giant black eye when looking back on the exhibition (if they don't consider it a "sport" why should we!!) Her artistic marks were artificially lowered to the extreme merely to keep the door open for the "favorites". Her 1989 World Championship LP skate remains to this day (01/2016) the finest LP in the history of figure skating!!
@lsrasr1586 жыл бұрын
terrific analysis, but i like her 1990 LP better. I also think she did an NHK in 89 that she used for her 1990 Worlds LP and that NHK was unbelievable, best LP ever I think. Although for her 1990 World's LP Scott Hamilton said it will be 50 years before we see another Midori Ito again and Toller Cranston said she was beyond 6.0 and no one was in her league.
@jondavwal132 жыл бұрын
I will say that Midori, if she skated well, was always chosen to win after 1989. It was all up to her. She was the anointed one, not Yamaguchi. In a lot of ways Yamaguchi and Ito were the Evert/Navratilova of figure skating. Martina was the athlete and Chrissie was consistency and a will of steel. People didn't realize that Martina was a VERY tough competitor and Evert was quite the athlete. Kristi was quite the jumper and was really doing the second hardest program after Ito. Yes, Harding had the axel, but Kristi's triple triple was harder and her jumps were more consistent. Midori was the greatest jumper of all time but her artistry was excitement she generated and her incredible charisma. She was no ballet dancer but she was quite the artist taken on her own terms. I was a big Yamaguchi fan but in retrospect I'm sad Midori didn't win in 1992. She deserved the gold medal and Kristi would have have won it in 1994.

I normally get annoyed by Scott Hamilton commentating but here, he is absolutely right to be so excited by Midori Ito... She has fans all over the world, including here in London UK.
I just watched Valieva skate to the world record and still think Midori's performance here is more exciting. Actually far more exciting and has never been equaled.
@jondavwal132 жыл бұрын
This is the truth. The Russians have found a way to do these jumps but not really DO them. Tight tight legs, fast rotations, no excitement. Valieva pales in comparison to this, especially since she still has a little girl's body. Midori was small but she was a woman. Only 3-4 people in history have been able to land some of these jumps after going through puberty and Valieva isn't one of them.

This is from The Herald Scotland newspaper August 16, 1992 about Midori changing figure skating. "Midori Ito of Japan has reclaimed figure skating and is transforming a sport where elegance once ruled. Like ice dancing, figure skating is a mix of ballet, gymnastics and showmanship but a new athleticism has been introduced to the sport. In 1988 Little Ito, as she's affectionately known, became the first woman to perform one of the trickiest of all skating manoeuvres -- a triple Axel (named after Axel Paulsen, a Norwegian skater at the turn of the century). ''She's the only woman I've seen who can compete with the top men. Her jumping ability is incredible,'' says Canadian gold medallist Kurt Browning. Midori Ito ''is in the vanguard of a new breed of athletes poised to turn the sport into acrobatics,'' reported The New York Times recently."
