So let me get this straight: She collided with some other skater on warm up, then crashed into the cameras, got wood chips into her foot/hurt her foot so bad she couldn't walk afterwards, but continued her program like nothing happened, and helped clean up and apologised? I don't have a hat, but I take it off anyways.

On the one hand, cool, on the other hand, that's not healthy at all, that should absolutely not be handled that way. Who treats people like that, is that some legal form of torture or something...?

@Originals MLM archive Yes adrenaline even in much less stressful situations such as giving a speech in front of a crowd can have masking effects of pain. While I wouldn’t recommend necessarily skating with an injury to everyone, in her case I don’t think it was something sinister (like extreme pressure from the outside) but more her drive to do her best as an athlete. She loves skating. She even competed as an adult. I have seen her even into her 50s.

And she even came back to the camera man to apologize and even picked up some pieces of broken stuffs where she spun off the rink. Funny accident but overall a great way to show sportsmanship.

I remember watching this when it happened. I am still in awe of Midori. What an amazingly talented skater she was. And such a good sport. And a kind person. I miss athletes like her. I hope your life has been happy, Miss Ito. Thank you for the pleasure your skatimg has brought to us!

You asked what Ito is doing now. Well, after going on to win the silver medal at the 92 Olympics (and landing the first triple axle by a woman in Olympic history), she skated professionally, beating Yamaguchi several times, did sports commentation for Japan, and was given the honor of lighting the Olympic flame during the opening ceremony in Nagano (1998). She was also inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 2007. She's a legend.

Midori was such a badass. One of the most talented jumpers the sport has ever seen. Amazing. Her LP in Albertville is still one of my all-time favorites--she fell on the 3A in the beginning, then had the guts to throw it again at the end, and landed it! Just incredible.

Will never forget watching this live. Probably the world’s loudest gasp! What always amazed me was how not one other skater bothered to help her when the collision occurred. Surya skated by her like she didn’t exist.
@carrieeee3014 Жыл бұрын
I don't think she completely skated past her. She probably mouthed are you okay or did the gesture. At my rink when someone has a bad fall we all kinda do that motion and if they don't get up we skate over but only then really.
@user-kh9ki3kq8m3 ай бұрын
the other skaters are also still being timed and warming up for the competition. not to be heartless, but them checking up on her is wasting their warmup time and they don’t get much! especially for someone who wasn’t even involved or responsible for it tbh.

I can see midori's legs were shaking after the performance so I can tell how her injured was bad. However, she cared the cameramen and tried to smile not to worry other people. Even though she fell, she went back to the program immediately. I was impressed. I respect midori.

Midori, such a brave girl...I wouldn't have thought I would lough during a figure skating program, but her combination ending out of the rink was hilarious. What a great skater!
Jenny Kirk said that Laeticia Hubert was the scariest skater to share the ice with. Apparently Hubert was known for being very oblivious to other skaters (i.e. dangerous) around her and would just skate full speed around without looking where she was going. Even in this video, you see Midori always checking behind her as she's doing her backward crossovers while Hubert is just going extremely fast backwards without looking or checking to see if she was clear.

I agree. IMO this was intentional to "eliminate" the competition. She only "checked" on Ito for the press
@deenibeeni39389 жыл бұрын
She was one of my favorite skaters. Tough cookie. People think "training" means only training in skating per se. But it's the same for every athlete: it means training mentally as well as physically. She has been trained from a young age to gather herself quickly when such things happen, as they do all the time in practice, but especially during performance, & they have to learn how to deal with other competitors trying to psych them out as well. To have that ability to remain focused is part of what defines an internationally ranked athlete. I think people who are horribly worried about Midori or any athlete in a situation like this don't understand what it means to be an elite competitor. No idea what it takes, what their day is like, the kind of strength you have to have, how much you have to want it. They think these competitors are like you & me. They couldn't be more wrong.

When I saw this competition and Midori does her tp db toe right into the camera guys. I thought she got hurt. Then she got up and went right on skating. I liked her when she just smiles and skates her whole program. Then she goes to the camera guys to see if it was okay. Wow! What a beautiful spirit and spunk she had. That wasn't a good day for her. I did not like the fact the Hubert didn't even stop to see if she was okay. Not very nice for Hubert.
So that's how it went - I saw that event too and I was always under the impression the injury that she got when colliding with the French skater was what impaired her during the long program (she did skate that, and Germany television presented that as her skating "with a broken rib"). But from what they are show here it actually seemed to have been the injury to her foot wheich she sustained when landing in the camera bay. I love this girl's attitude - and no wonder everybody cheered when she was the first woman ever to land a triple axle in competition. Of course Tonya did the same a few months or years later, and people did not cheer so much then, and not only because Tonya was the second to do it. I think Midori would never have directly approached the judges and challenged them about the scores he gave her, and used the words Tonya used (if what the film states is true).She was always very polite - which is not what you could say of this other lady. And compare this incident with when that Ukrainian Skating's Little Orphan Awesome collided with a German skater a few years later after this at the Olynpics (I think it was in 1994) and there was a lot of publicising about how many stitches she had gotten and how she had to check with the powers that be that the medication she had to take wouldn't be on the backlist of substances, and there was a lot of drama around this incident overall, and a lot of demonstrative tears in the "kiss and cry"area and her being late for the award ceremony afterward because she had to refresh her makeup after so much crying. The point is that both of these other ladies publicised themselves ina certain way to get sympathy or at least reluctant recognition, and for Midori it was always about the sport. She's still skating competitively, by the way - I've seeb footage of her skating at an event as late as 2019 (when she was 50!) and though she is not doing the triple axel any more, it's still quite impressive. Interesting through that the older she gets, the more cutesy the music gets that she skates to.
@Euxiphipops773 жыл бұрын
Technically she DID complete the combination so there should be only a small deduction (the Lutz by the way was gigantic). Anyways - this whole performance is epic given how much of bad luck she faced that day.
