Thanks for watching! Read all about Joe here 👉🏾 bit.ly/richroll567
To enter 2021 correct, I sat down with Joe De Sena-one of the toughest people on the planet and the mastermind behind the Spartan obstacle course racing series that became a global phenomenon.
This is a conversation about turning quitters into people who commit. It’s about why doing hard things makes you better, happier and healthier. And it’s about the potential we all possess to catalyze radical transformation.
From the heart, Joe is bullshit-free and 100% authentic. His message is powerful. Entirely experience-based. And paired with practical tools fundamental to shattering stagnation.

Reconfirms that people need physical, mental, emotional friction in order to grow. Truly needs to be in the mandatory curriculum starting at kindergarten. Great stuff, thx Rich and company!

I'm in landscaping and there's an event called "scarification" where a seed gets scarred by something; a fire, a plow, a mower, etc. The scarring of that seed promotes it to grow. If you mow down a field that hasn't been mowed in 100 years and then set it on fire, that fire will cause seeds that have been laying dormant in the ground for 80+ years to grow. We see native grasses that haven't been around for ages by burning and plowing up old fields, so just like other parts of nature (humans are also nature), we do need friction to grow.

I thoroughly enjoyed this podcast and learning about Joe deSena’s life. I am the target audience for this, having gained 50lbs over the past seven years after going through 20 lb weight loss with C-diff which I finally overcame with plant based diet (spinach and sunflower seeds, primarily.) I eat well, but do not exercise at all, except for yard work.It is tremendously motivating for me. Thank you

“The most spiritual men, as the strongest, find their happiness where others would find their destruction: in the labyrinth, in hardness against themselves and others, in experiments. Their joy is self-conquest: asceticism becomes in them nature, need, and instinct. Difficult tasks are a privilege to them; to play with burdens that crush others, a recreation. Knowledge-a form of asceticism. They are the most venerable kind of man: that does not preclude their being the most cheerful and the kindliest.” -Nietzsche

Re growing up around wise guys and their code of ethics: my mother’s trombone player (Joe) grew up with them and would have become part of the Italian group but said his trombone saved him. He shared a story that as a kid, an older bully stole his trombone. Evidently, the bully was part of “The Family.” The next week, the bully was reprimanded by The Family for stealing, was forced to return the trombone and ordered to be Joe’s bodyguard for the rest of his days in the neighborhood.

I understand that a company's cash flow goes out of whack when revenue dries up, but you're telling me that Spartan doesn't have enough net worth to keep people employed, even at 60% of their salaries, for a year? Such a typical corporate response when cash flow takes a hit.

The President Physical Fitness Test was soooo boring... I bet if someone transformed it into something more like the "Death Race" but a lighter more kid friendly version, it would go over better. Like having it be an obstacle course... we got rid of recess too soon in the US. Being fit can and should be fun. We are missing that.

Sad moment in history when a father has to think twice about describing the fact that he and his wife have a family because it might be politically incorrect. Sad and funny.

This guy brings up he and his wife having four kids... “ and doesn’t know how to say it “. And I’m supposed to be inspired by this guy who’s physically brave ? Yet is cowed by the PC language police on how he’s ‘supposed’ to talk about he and his wife having 4 kids. Geez.
