What annoys me about the show is that it gives you a taste of story, then it goes "Noooooo we don't want a story, we're episodic we swear!" Then they give more story a season later and are like "NNNNOOOOO this story you like and we created? It's a BAD story and you should feel bad about wanting more!" And then they give more anyway. It's just really tiring honestly.

A better showrunner would probably have Rick intentionally suppressing the plot because he's terrified of change until it all eventually boils over in something even he can't stop. You can still be very episodic with that concept. Rick essentially (not literally) going "oh fuck if we don't leave now we're gonna spend 2 episodes here and causality is gonna catch up with me" would've been a lot better than the writers just laughing at the viewer.

@OGTwistedDobermanXCVI
@OGTwistedDobermanXCVI Жыл бұрын
Rick and Morty is already needlessly confusing. Like fuck if I wanted to watch weird random Eldrich level shit spontaneously appear throughout a series, I'd watch Regular Show, which is S Tier for a cartoon series that's legit just a couple homies working at a park with other homies. It's the mundane nature of the show's premise being abruptly catapulted into a completely random chaotic event usually involving some kinda supernatural or super Meta type of story shift that is completely jarring to the audience in a way that engages us by tapping into our curiosity, subliminally encouraging us to continue watching it to figure out what the hell is even going on and how it correlates to the original point of the episode. As Regular Show continued throughout its seasons, it kept to that same plot format of "Dudes supposed to be working, ends up goofing off, ends up messing some shit up or doing something they shouldnt have, weird shit happens, conflict, resolve, conclusion, fin", which is a relatively simple yet decent and strong format for a slice of life type of comedy show. It clearly kept fans of the series always tuning in just to see what kinda weird crazy shit was gonna happen next. With Rick and Morty, you have no format. It's just chaotic randomness that makes no sense, then the show trys to nudge you like "EYYY GET IT? LOL BECAUSE WE SAID SO AND THAT'S RELATABLE" and expect you to catch on.
@OGTwistedDobermanXCVI

I'd say, "Overwhemingly Pretentious" would be the most appropriate adjective to describe Rick and Morty, not "Complex". To be complex would imply that whatever it is that makes the show complex is what holds it together and makes it function. Rick and Morty is more like Brian Griffin in that one episode where Stewie takes these ADHD pills (Pretty sure its Adderal or Vicodin or something) and Brian takes one and gets all tweaked out and starts up on a typing tangent, thinking hes brainstorming all these super brilliant ideas and super deep concepts for his book, but by the time he comes down and crashea from the high and decided to check out his presumed masterpiece, only to realize in shock that all he wrote was pretty much several pages worth of word salad that made absolutely no sense. I feel like that word salad Brian wrote was probably what would soon become Rick and Morty. Lolololol. After all, the storyline of every epsiode sounds and looks like the mad ramblings of the local neighborhood tweakers standing on the street corner.😂😂😂

I feel like if any character has changed it has to be Morty. He has really gone from a awkward kid dragged along on adventures through a multiverse he knows nothing about and therefor is forced to blindly trust in Rick to a much more independent individual who is capable of making his own decisions and take charge of bad situations instead of first calling on Rick for help ...even if ultimately he screws it up and needs Rick's help anyway. I do agree though with the large amounts of nothing in the show. I don't think I would mind what are the more "filler" episodes as it is still a sitcom and it's first priority is to entertain and make you laugh. My problem with the filler episodes is a subjective one in that to me most of them are just not funny to me. Usually I prefer shows to either be each episode is it's own self contained story that has no effect on the next or be more of a journey where every episode is relevant to the plot. Like Classic Spongebob and Avatar: The Last Airbender. Both are good shows but are totally different in how they tell stories. Trying to do both can be a disaster like Steven Universe or amazing like Futurama. Rick and Morty I am not sure where I would place in comparison to those two. I feel like it is more like one or the other by the seasons and not by the show as a whole. I might be talking nonsense since these are basically 2AM shower thoughts but yeah. That's what this video made me think about. I love videos that make me think whether I agree or not. ...or in this case am currently unsure.

The guy skipped 7 whole episodes declaring there is nothing there because it didn’t advance the almost nonexistent ongoing plot. One of the episode was about nihilistic Rick’s difficulties making friends. But at the start of the video he literally criticized the show for lack of building on the theme of Nihilism. I really don’t understand if he is looking for deep philosophical ideas or a competent ongoing plot. I don’t think both are interchangeable when saying the show doesn’t have depth.

The thing about Rick is, for all his apparent lack of any serious weaknesses, he does, on rare occasions, wind up in situations where having either Morty or Summer or another character is the only solution. It’s extremely rare, since it’s usually either his own godlike abilities or the massive council of other versions of himself that rules most of the universe or even his enemies’ own incompetence that saves him, yet once in a while, even someone as powerful as Rick Sanchez needs someone to bail him out. The further into the show we go the worse this seems to get, but he never truly gets to the point where he could truly run the show himself, since he will always find some way to get in over his head, as unlikely as that may seem.

The show might not be deep with philosophical concepts but it is definitely clever with imaginative concepts, it makes you ponder a little (It is NOT! hard to grasp, or needs some advanced cognitive level to watch as some people like to say). I personally enjoy the show for it's unique sci-fi concepts for example (the Roy the game, the Simulation scammers, the memory parasites, etc. etc.) each episode has a new crazy concept, it reminds me of Doctor who and black mirror in that sense. Also Ricks extreme apathy could be interpreted as the answer to the Nihilism question. You can't tell me that you didn't find any philosophical concepts on the battery episode or the rest and Ricklaxation one. It doesn't give you the answers but it asks them and that's deep enough for what the show is. Ultimately the show is made for wacky adventures, of course it's not deep as The good place but then again you are comparing different things. You wouldn't compare Bojack horseman to Friends. I agree 100% with your conclusions at 19:23 is spot on but then It rubs me wrong when you say that some episodes have 0 value. or not worth watching??! why!? because they didn't explore some philosophical question? Entertainment is the value.

Rick and Morty is the best show for people that tend to get amazed by deep and disturbing concepts like Absurdism and Nihilism but dont want them to explore at a deeper level because its either too much or too boring. Bojack Horseman is the best show for people that want to explore those concepts and are not afraid of being deeply disturbed by the action of their beloved hero. Thats on a story the level the big difference between the shows, Rick claims hes the Big Bad and despite constantly doing good stuff, Bojack claims he is deep down a good person, he acknowledges some of his mistakes but not even close to everything he has done wrong. Most often than not he blaims his own wrong doings on other people and as a first time viewer you even tend to believe him because after all he is the protagonist. Only if you really watch closely you can see that Bojack is a horrible person that is sometimes open to change, but its to little to late. Despite being the show that is sillier, Bojack Horseman has wildly more complex characters in really complex situations, Rick isnt a complex character he claims to be bad, complex and that he doesnt care, if you think about it for a minute he is nothing of these traits. Thats why in my humble opinion Bojack Horseman is the deeper and more disturbing show, after all if Bojack experiences the loss of a person he cant go into another Universe and live there with the person he lost (Like Rick literally did?? He did change Universes multiple times, but everytime into a Universe where Beth and Morty are alive). If you have endless options and nothing has consequences does anything mean anything? Both shows are good, for me personally Bojack Horseman is the way better show, but i cant deny that Rick and Morty has its moments, is funny and has its pop cultural relevance even though they mock pop cultur the entire time, which at this point is fucking annoying.
@peterkirk8510

I think it's a lot easier to fall into this thinking if you view rick as the main character - I don't really think that's fair. "if Bojack experiences the loss of a person he cant go into another Universe and live there with the person he lost (Like Rick literally did?? He did change Universes multiple times, but everytime into a Universe where Beth and Morty are alive). If you have endless options and nothing has consequences does anything mean anything?" This is a really good question, actually. Does it? Does the fact that you are ruining the life of numerous version of an infinite number of sentient versions of people you actually DO care about mean something? Just dropping the world and going to another one doesn't make that previous world not exist, those people still exist, and what they have is perfectly, 100% real to them. It's all they know, and usually is all they will ever know. This is something they bring up, multiple times, actually (see: cronenberg world, rewind button). Rick has NO idea how to deal with it, and neither does morty (see parts where they kill alternate versions of themselves). The show makes you think, at least. Bojack may be deeper and more disturbing, but trivializing what goes on in rick and morty to "he can just go to another near-identical dimension so nothing he does matters" is losing the plot
@moriarty8197
@moriarty8197 11 ай бұрын
@@peterkirk8510 Well yes and no. You see if nothing has consequences, nothing makes you grow from your mistakes that you made. If you had by any chance a younger sibling and you hurt them, your first reaction was most likely "Dont tell Mum." because you were in fear of consequences. That doesnt mean you didnt face any consequences you could have learned from, your younger sibling maybe didnt trust you as much for a few days or he did tell mum eventually. If you could have just swapped realities you would never really learned how to handle a situation where you hurt somebody, thats the situation Rick is in the show. Its not that he is idiotic and in denial about the consequences of his actions, its the almost childish fear of them and the run away approach that is putting me off lately. Its a noise in the woods situation. To him his actions more or less didnt happen, though many people have been affected by them, sometimes on a planet and galactic scale. The only more or less redeeming fact about his run away from reality is that so far none of his alternate Universes we explored featured a Version of his dead Wife, that would be a little too dark of a coping mechanism for me to tolerate actually. Rick is after all not a big smart he is the BIGGEST SMART, its most likely not that he is to incompetent to fix his mistakes, its more likely that he is to indifferent, apathetic and to afraid of his own actions to make right what he has done wrong. They made an entire episode about that, he fucked a planet, it got pregnant and he was like eeeeh whatever cya. Only Beth made him stop to swoop right out of his responsibility. That means all his actions are to him victimless, and its more or less like they didnt happen, out of sight out of mind. But the worse part is that doesnt make him a bad person necessarily, a bad person like he claims to be would claim there wrongdoings for them rather than flew away from them. So yes your point still stands, all the bad things that they have done are still real, but they only person that used to get eaten alive by this fact was Morty, and to Rick its like they never happend.

Ngl, I kinda have to disagree with this, for the simple fact that it really does change. Over the course of the four seasons, we see how Morty and family members become more capable. They need him less and less, to the point where they start going on adventures entirely on their own. Like in the first episode of season 5, the very first scene is of Morty saving Rick’s life. Even if you argue that this was on,y a gateway for Morty to screw it up by landing on the ocean, you can’t deny that Rick has entirely given up at this point. and later on in the episode, Morty goes on his own adventure on his own and literally makes himself an evil god figure to a species. Beth realised that she doesn’t need Rick and that he is an abuse parent who left her. Jerry is more assertive and learns to become the man of the house. Summer learns that she doesn’t need approval from Rick and can do adventures without him. As a small little thing, you say that when Beth basically says “it’ll be like season 1 but better and not as reliant on you” it makes it so the previous episodes were entirely pointless when it comes to character development. To me, the message of that moment is quite the opposite, it signifies how everything has really changed for the better, and away from Rick. Even besides all that. I don’t think the theme of the show is about nihilism. On the contrary, I think it’s about rejecting nihilism. In the family, Rick is really the only nihilist. He sees the universe as I relevant, and thus doesn’t cares about what happens to it, however, we get to see how his mistakes do have effect on the worlds he inhabits. When he left his original universe with all the bug monsters, we see how he’s not only put his original family in a living hell, but have endangered his current family. not only does Rick and Morty show how what he does does matter, it also shows that him, and his mindset, are the losers. In the end, everyone in the family except Rick have found new identities that are both safer and more fulfilling, while being disconnected from Rick. And Rick is all alone contemplating where it all went wrong. This is the change and depth you say it is missing. To be sure, I don’t disagree with you when you say that it is mainly a bunch of small, funny story lines loosely connected together. However, you ignore or misinterpreted many elements of the show that completely derail your arguments.

Many people always ask me how I was able to get into Harvard as a 16 year old who skipped 3 grades of high school. They think I got in because of my scholarly records, but no the key is the interview. As I sat in the Harvard Dean's office in front of the board of reviewers for my application, the Dean asks me "Why should you be a good candidate for this school?" They seemed bored but I replied "Well I was born a child prodigy, placed 1st in my state spelling bee for three consecutive years, I can speak eight different languages not counting Latin, play four different instruments, I skipped grades 4 through 6, and graduated my high school as valedictorian at the age of 14. I then worked as an intern at both Telsa, and NASA." Suddenly the room burst into laughter and many of board instantly started scribbling down "No" near the application check marks. The Dean says "Sorry but you are just not the type we are looking for." But then I said "Excuse me but I wasn't finished... I watch Rick and Morty" The Dean looked at me like an idiot and said "So....?" Then I replied with a smile "And I understand all the references and subtle jokes" An audible gasp let out by the board was so loud the secretary had to come in. You could hear a pin drop and then suddenly all at once the entire board clicked their pens on the "Approved Box" and I was instantly handed a diploma and now I'm teaching advanced physicals there. I guess you can say I'm pretty smart. :)

The thing that bothers me about Rick and Morty being so committed to being episodic is that the show has potential to be so much more. The plot is playing out more now which is great, but it kinda feels like a lot of element of the story aren’t being used to their potential: morty’s original Jerry, the rift that the dinosaurs closed, evil Rick (to an extent), Morty’s character development, etc. Like there are episodes that explore character development, but after one or two episodes, the characters remain pretty much the same.

I feel that this show constantly returning to the status quo is a rather important point of the whole show. It's not like none of it happened, but it does make a point about nihilism: that nothing actually matters. It just makes that tangible by literally reverting everything to the same old. That said, since everything did happen and people keep their memories on the events I feel it has subtly shifted the dynamics between the characters, as well as their personal development. I feel that some episodes in season 5 really reflect this too, especially the one where Morty goes on a rampage and Jessica leaves the picture as a love interest. I don't think the show is especially deep but there's a little more to it than it _just_ reverting to the usual shtick.

He asked me things like “did the old man clone himself.” I’d tell him no, they’re from another universe, but then he’d be confused over how their could be two of the same person without cloning. Try as I might, I could not sufficiently explain it. Kinda makes me glad the writers of this show shy away from time travel

But even that is pretty barebones in terms of sci-fi. Many, many stories deal with the multiverse. If you're familiar with any of them, Rick and Morty really isn't that hard to understand.

@@highdefinition450 not really, most plots deal with a sci fi trope and turn it on its head to make a point, like the narnia portal episode, or the antique shop

I think it can be deep based on how many of the characters are realistic and we can see ourselves in them. Rick is a genius alcoholic grandfather who hates himself and takes it out on everyone else, a lot of people can relate to having regrets similar to Rick and his alcoholism and his self destructive behaviour that actually just makes him feel worse. Morty is a teenage boy who becomes progressively more assertive and confident as the show goes on which creates tension in his relationship with Rick who likes to walk all over him, people who have been taken advantage of in a similar way by family or friends can relate to this. I think I do tbh. Beth is mother but isn’t a good mum or bad mum who is stuck in a crumbling marriage and idolises her alcoholic father who missed her whole childhood, any girl with daddy issues or martial issues can relate to Beth. Summer is a angsty teenage girl who shows so many signs of being the next Rick which is not a good thing and is often ignored and overshadowed in her family, she is literally me. And Jerry is probably the most normal character in the show, everyone is a little bit like Jerry and for some reason we all bullied him for not being as cool as the other characters but he’s literally a normal man who’s constantly ignored by his family, thrown constantly into danger either because everyone is or because his family literally chose him to be a sacrifice and his wife doesn’t love him. I’ve met so many men like Jerry and even if he can be annoying sometimes I still feel a lot of sympathy for him. Basically, the characters are so much like real people it engages us so much and helps us ignore some major issues the show has. I really don’t want to admit it has kind of become the one thing the writers didn’t want it to become. And with arguing that the show is deep, I just summarised all the characters in one sentence.

Seeing someone go over the first 4 seasons of rick and morty just reminds me of how much better this show was back then, nowadays it's basically just a sci-fi version of family guy

Based on season mentions throughout the show, I'd wager Adult Swim does have an end in mind for the show. Season 10. But they I have a relatively simple plot of doing something with Rick prime, maybe evil Morty, so they have to stretch it out over a long time. Which makes for a lot of filler episodes that weren't that important, or revert every change back to normal or "season 1" that gets increasingly streamlined.

I wouldn’t say that they absolutely nothing about nihilism They certainly use Ricks character to say that nihilism is used as an escape mechanism from feeling pain by some people Cause if they believe nothing matters they don’t need to care about anything

You probably won't read this because this video is over 2 years old, but i just wanted to say i watched bojack Horseman (not solely because of this video because i heard a bit about it from other people but this video is what finally got me to sit down and watch it) and you are so right. Like i was worried because of the state of adult animation that this show and its finale were overhyped, but i was wrong. The fact that "The View From Halfway Down" lost to the vat of acid episode (which to be fair is a fine rick and morty episode) is absolutely absurd. Again, it is a fine rick and morty episode, but the view from Halfway down is possibly the best conclusion to a fantastic show i may have seen in a while. The realization bojack makes along with the twists is perfect. The vat of acid episode, an episode that consists of an interesting gag of acid vat and the plot of morty wanting infinte lives and having some shenanigans and then realizing the reality of that and having to face the consequences of his actions only going back to the original gag, compared to an episode i can not even summarize because its impact on the story and the ideas he has to grapple with and the realization and that the characters make would spoil a lot of the show for those who haven't watched and not to mention how well written it is just in general. It is absurd that the two episodes really even put in the same tier and a crime that The View from Halfway Down did not win. Anyways i really like your videos great work.
