Funny Adam should say that he showed the film to his kids and they didn’t appreciate it much. I was about 10 when I came downstairs for some water and my parents were watching it. I seen in full detail the wolf attack on Jack. Fucking shit scarred me for life. I’m now 32 and I’m still shit scared of that god damn werewolf, creeps me out like nothing ever has.

Rewatching it, I was surprised at how slow the overall transformation was, around 3 mins I think. We're so used to these beats now that they tend to drag. We expect a quicker reveal.

I saw it on video in 1986. My dad, an engineer, was adamant about me seeing such things & understanding none of it was real. And I absolutely loved it. I'm 37 now and still love that werewolf! Even have a Slaughtered Lamb T-shirt.

I first tried to watch American Warewolf in London at a friend's house when I was about 11. The dream sequence with this monstrosity bursting in was the point that I had to make my excuses and leave... utterly terrifying. It's haunted me ever since (I'm now in my 40s!) 😂

From an archival perspective, I hope someone is laser scanning these so there's at least a 3D model of it to reference in later years. it would also be cool from a model makers perspective to have legit 360 degree reference art.

I found a mask at a local horror / holloween supply party store and already had military clothing and a flat black German ww2 helmet and tryed to go as this same monster at a couple of large malls . I even made my own monster hand gloves to go along with the costume . people loved it

I believe it and the other three were actually sculpted by his students while he worked on the main wolf due to time constraints, but he oversaw it's production and had to approve of them regardless. Awesome piece of movie history you have there ❤

I love the fact that the teeth are virtually the same as on the wolf. Great physical foreshadowing/conditioning. Forty years later and still the best werewolf transformation and design.

Rick Baker and Rob Bottin were masters of their art. The organic look of these creatures just cannot be captured in CGI.

Well it can now, but the VFX world is all about time crunch so digital sculptors just don't get the time SFX artists would get back in the day. Hopefully with virtual sets becoming more prevalent and bringing VFX more into the pre production and production stages we'll finally get to see CGI artists shine. Gotta keep in mind Rick is HUGE in the Zbrush scene and has won awards there too for his work inspiring and assisting the CGI community. Rick is an amazing digital artist as well.

I got the NECA figure of this guy a week ago. The box actually says "Nightmare Demon" (I guess to avoid controversy), and it comes with 3 interchangeable heads of the other demons in the scene. I also pre-ordered their Kessler Werewolf figure which looks insane.

At age 13 I went to see AWWIL in the theater when it was released. From the get-go when David and Jack ver off the road...whew, holy hell that was intense! At one point I had to remove myself from the theater I was so freaked out. lol. The nightmare within a nightmare sequence was brilliant!

I begged my mom to take me to see this while it was still in theaters, I was 12. She agreed... we had to leave some time during the transformation. I didn’t watch the full transformation until I was 18 😂 This is a true horror film. It stands the test of time. As a kid I loved the monster matinee on Saturdays. I was a fan of horror.... classic horror that is.... this was the first graphic movie for me and the loss of a likable character in the beginning was very new to me. No Abbot and Costello here... LOL. My mom and I still laugh about this.

Still the best, imo, werewolf horror film of all time. The practical FX used are beyond compare, especially the ingenious use of air bladders for the transformation scenes. It's a marvelous night for a moondance....

Mom and Dad took me and my brother to see this on the big screen when we where young teens. Dad would hide for months afterwards to jump scare us. To hear Mom yell at him while being scared and laughing at the same time. A great memory. I remember this scene vividly.

Just to say, I LOVE this film. The werewolf is still the most terrifying werewolf in film history in my opinion. There have been other great werewolves, as in the Underworld movies, they're wonderful costumes and very cool, but there's a difference between 'cool' and 'horrific'. Anyway, my original reason for commenting is how obvious the Dremel created 'scratches' are once you see this close up. 3:01 if you want to see. They're not at all realistic as genuine wear and tear scratches but of course you never see that when it's in the movie. Like many viewers of this, virtually everything I own is either made by me, painted by me or aged by me, and whenever I work on something I do it to a level that it looks absolutely real even close up. That's the difference between amateur and professional i guess! Knowing when the details don't have to look absolutely real and just work on camera. Every minute saved is a slice off the budget! This is an incredible work of art though and I'm very jealous of whoever ends up owning it!

What would have been really cool, to have a button to press to play a sound clip of this things scream from the movie. Talk about terrifying!!!...especially at the age I saw this movie. I was 10 years old when I finally saw it.

rewatched due to this clip. forgot just how good it was and what it meant to me ...saw it like most people as a kid n it scared the shite outta me. saddened and smiles for rik mayal's appearance - oh and brian glover ! alien3 works for me mostly due to his performance. great old school british actor

From what I heard before Rick Baker got regular work in effects to make money he used to make pull over masks like this and he used to stamp them. Apparently, even then they were quite sought after and very well made at the time. I am not sure how many of is original pull overs still exist? but quite a bit of them were used in the star wars cantina sequence.

I once had a debate about what each Nightmare Demon represented with a group of friends. Firstly they were Nazis because David & Jack were both Jewish guys back packing thru Europe. My contention was that the one shown here represented Jack as he was killed by the wolf- being it was a Werewolf but a decayed one, as Jack was dead. The Werewolf headed one represented David and his foreshadowing fate. The Bald Demon represented the Bald Old dude and the generally unpleasant welcome they received at the Slaughtered Lamb by its patrons and the fact he was the one who stood out the most among them, and warned David & Jack about sticking to the road & keeping clear of the Moors. The Bearded Demon represented the state he was caught in between-Man & Monster. Oh, the things you come up with after a few beers.

Lovely to see that this mask is so well preserved. Both this and the bald one had to do specific tasks. As we can clearly see, this head and probably the other, have glass eyes mounted in them. How and what could the poor guys wearing them see!? This guy had to viciously stab Jenny and know where the blood bags were and the bald one had to hit the prosthetic throat David wore dead on. Must've been hairy for all concerned! (Pun intended!)

It actually wasn't John Chambers that recommended Rick. It was an employee at ..I think it was Don Post Studios that recommended Rick. Rick would go there to get a gallon of latex, as he couldn't afford the big 5 gallon containers.

And to think that scene was done in a brightly lit room, you still can’t get CG effects like this, the brighter it is the more that has to be rendered 😭 meaning more $$$. The one movie that has a epic CG sequence in bright daylight that is still Legendary is the 97 STARSHIPTROOPERS bug war in the desert. INTENSELY MEMORABLE. Rick Bakeris a Legend but also praises DICK SMITH who always wanted to teach the younger artists his secrets. PRACTICAL EFFECTS are still the best, think Stan Winston’s Dinosaurs or GROGU🤫

I am absolutely not a fan of horror and I've been dragged to every horror film I've seen in theaters by a friend. That said, the makeup can be amazing on them. To be honest, I thought "American Werewolf in London" was a comedy spoof of horror movies from the name (the "American werewolf" part sounded like a contrivance for making fun of American stereotypes) but I never saw it (and never will no matter what comments I get in response). I'm surprised to learn a movie with that title is an actual horror classic.

At 1:00 according to wikipedia Rick Baker only won 7 Oscar's for makeup. Perhaps he picked one up in another category?

Aw yes. Showing movies to your kids they shouldn't see. I remember being home alone with my 4 year old daughter one Saturday afternoon and I decided that Mars Attacks! would be a nice Saturday afternoon flick. When Michal J fox got his hand severed and a dog ran away with it my cute little daughter turned around and looked at me with that frown of horror and disgust and said "Dad-ee-ee!!" I couldn't help but laugh. "You're right, Kido. Sorry I forgot how weird this movie is" So I turned it off.

hehe not the shot i remember. for me when i first seen this film i was in my teens and was tripping on magic mushrooms. the one part that sticks in my mind was when his dead mate was in the cinema and was rotting away that blew my mind back then. i had to watch the movie a couple of times when not on shrooms. but it still is the best scene in the movie. oh apart from when he was changing into a wold. i felt every bone and muscle and ligament bend and snap. dont watch on shrooms. lol.

That’s DEFINITELY not a mold of ANY German helmet from WW1 or WW2, it’s a fantasy piece inspired by the M16 or M35 German helmet….BUT, oddly enough, the demon’s helmet is much closer in look to the Iraqi Fedayeen helmet…which was inspired by Darth Vader’s helmet…..which was inspired by German WW2 helmets…. HEAD EXPLODES

absolutely untrue. holds up in the utmost in terms of writing, effects, cinematography. as for the ending, it was a logical ending to his story arc and it’s ending the cycle of the werewolf which is a big theme.
