Welcome friends and thank you for joining us for this very special episode. We are delighted to welcome the incomparable Rick Beato to the show! Rick is a musician, educator, producer and well, all-round sensation on KZfaq, having clocked up close to 3.5 million subscribers at the time of this video. That’s about 10 times That Pedal Show, just to put it into perspective.
Rick contacted us to say he was heading to the UK, so we jumped at the chance of inviting him to Schwangri-La for a chat.
There is sooooo much stuff we could have talked about, but we decided to centre on a general discussion around producing and recording guitar. Rick’s knowledge and insight on the subject is a treat for all of us.

I met Rick at NAMM. We stood and chatted, mainly about our kids. He is “real” and he deserves his fame, I’m so happy for him and I’m so happy he is the greatest music teacher/ music ambassador in history.

I’m 62 years old , started playing 6 years ago and recording in the last 4 years. My garage is now a music studio. I am super appreciative of the knowledge you guys and Rick bring to us . I recently found my tone that I have been trying to find for years , ( Mentioned in this video) Turn the gain down ! . Thanks so much for what you do .

What makes Beato great? He obviously have a fantastic memory. When he has heard or learned something one time, he remember it forever. His mind is obviously also very good at problem solving. Figuring out complex challenges. Combine that with passion, a kind soul, and be able to express his thoughts.

I kinda wish I didn’t learn barre chords first, I wish I had learned inversions first. To be fair, learning the “E” and “A” shape barre chord is a fantastic way to learn your root notes and you’re well on your way to understanding the fretboard.

@Smell The Glove Learning the open chords and barre chords first is best for memorisation and placement/muscle memory. Then ideally revisiting them ,music-theoretically, later on and seeing the r,3,5 etc is a more satisfactory way of understanding the major scale and its magic. " Out of the emptiness. Salvation !! ". It's a Rock n Roll Creation.

I think I was closer to 17 when I actually went in and tackled F barre. When I look back at it, the song I was learning at the time might not even use the full F barre. Still, I learned it because it felt like the right time to do it. Nowadays I "Hendrix" it most of the time.

Rick is a natural raconteur, but when it comes down to technical concepts he can really explain that stuff too! He did a great job today and always seems to handle interviews (on both sides) with aplomb. It's very impressive; I guess he's just really smart. Equally, Mick and Dan are endearing to watch, which is obviously why they're so popular. Great Show!

I had the opportunity too meet Rick back in the 80s. I was living in NYC . I was sitting on a bench just hanging out near Bleeker street and playing my acoustic. Up walks Rick. We talked for awhile and he asked me if I knew any stones songs. I started too play Angie. As it turns out it was his favorite stones song. Hard to believe that was so many years ago

Man, this is about the ultimate guitar / sound geek-out discussion I've ever listened to. All of the great rock LPs have so much layering going on from during recording, effects, amps, the room, mike choices / setup - and then there's the mix-down tricks. And so much amazing stuff was done before the digital era went totally crazy. I'm in awe of Rick and great sound engineers. But Rick, he's that rare bird who has the chops, knows all the theory stuff, AND the engineering. Gosh, if there was ever a man who does what he was created to do - it's Rick! Not to mention, he's so entertaining and fascinating to listen to explain and deconstruct things. Great video, guys!

This is a very inspiring talk. I am about to turn 33, next week, I have a Master's degree in philosophy and I am in the final stages of writing my doctrate. Just recently, I decided that I want to do something completely different and study Audio Engineering, once I finished my Phd. This video seriously gives me hope for my future. ❤

Not trying to start a fight, I just don’t talk to many philosophy PhDs. Over the past few years in the US our government has been talking about having blue collar net tax payers such as myself pay for college graduates student loans…. Since you’re a philosophy doctor, do you think this is ethical? I mean, on its face it’s unfair, that’s obvious. Again, not trying to talk shit or anything, just like to get your viewpoint.

@@smelltheglove2038 Why should I have to pay for ethanol subsidies or bailing out people who choose to live in hurricane zones? Because we live in a society. Having young people with less debt to worry about is good for the economy in the long run because there is more freedom of movement from one job to another and entrepreneurship. Same is true of healthcare not tied to employer.

@@bbdeffect I don’t think we should have to do any of the things you mention. However, people that get hit with hurricanes usually have home owners insurance… most states it’s a law. Having lived in Va. Beach while my father was forced to move into the area because he was in the navy, and having lived through many hurricanes, I can say leaving the east coast of the United States un-settled is an asinine idea. It’s just as asinine as comparing a force of nature to people who signed a contractual agreement to repay a loan, then forcing those who didn’t sign that contract to pay for it. Economics aside, how is it ethical to force someone to pay for a contract that you signed and they didn’t. Also, if college was worth it, we wouldn’t even be having this conversation. If it was such a good investment, the person who went to college shouldn’t have any issue paying back said loan. As it stands now, if your education doesn’t get you job where you make enough to pay back the loan, you simply wasted time and resources. Your want to go to college is taking food out of my kids mouths. I took out a loan for my work truck as a young man. Since it’s bad for young people to be saddled in debt, and since my work truck is an investment for my future and helps the community by getting me to peoples homes to repair their heating and air, should I get tax payers to pay my loan too?

At roughly 47:36: "It's all about the part. Any sound can sound good with the right part." I think that's something to dwell on a bit, to think of in the context of the discussion, the playing, the inflection. It's good to think of both backwards and forwards, as a tone can form the germ of a song idea, just as a song farther along in forming can inspire a search for a tone which could fit in. Of the many things said, that one thing resonated most for me. Thanks, guys.

Finally Rick Beato gets to talk about guitars and gear! The only thing I wish is taht Beato Book was also physical. I hate sitting at the computer trying to read educational material or thinking of music. That stuff still works the best for me on the couch with a physical book at night. Despite studying engineering and doing almost everything on computer. It also has an emotional connection and more respect when it sits in the bookshelf.

Ah man, when Mick got up to shake Ricks hand after he said turn the gain down - what a special moment, yknow, it's really easy for us to get caught up in sticking 3, 4 overdrive pedals on and thinking "Yeah this is enough gain" without paying attention to the volume - I think the post COVID TPS has been all about that relationship - not with gain, but with volume. A great reminder of that with Rick in this video. A shame not to see him play, but I imagine time was limited and the video had been going on for quite some time. A great video from you both especially as someone who doesn't have that background knowledge of how recording worked back then - thanks to all 3 of you.

Great interview, loved the deep dive into recording guitar tones. Feels like the days of mass experimentation for recorded guitar tones is in the past. We now have consistency and ease and good quality yes, epic tones, not so much. Golden age for guitar tone me was the very early 90’s, Eric Johnson, Aching Baby era The Edge, Neil Young Weld (albeit live), just monumental guitar sounds.

It is so great to live this time as a middle aged man, who loves music and plays an instrument. As a kid you had to have a great imagination and really struggle to pick up how everything was played and who those musical heroes were (they all got superpowers atleast). As years have gone bye, came internet and all the modern media, where you could digest everything when ever you wanted. But the most important thing is that all these amazing music books started to be available, different documents started to appear and you could really go deep in the rabbit hole if you want. Mr. Beato is greatest hero of this modern age to us 60s, 70s, 80s kids. He is a historian, he keeps the essence of music bright and alive. And he is truly charismatic person, awesome storyteller, he has great temper (those rants are awesome!), highly skillfull musician and producer. Thanks for everything (includes Mick and Dan!) and greetings from Finland!

that was so great listening to this interview -awesome ! Rick is so experienced in the trenches and he is so intelligent and so practical in his approach to music and producing ! Loved this. Contextual examples were great as it all depends on what's going on in the song. Fantastic. Thanks Pedal Show - big fan.
