Rick Danko - RARE TV APEARANCE - 1991

The late great Rick Danko makes a rare TV appearance to a corny show called "The Real Story". While this is amazing footage, it is cheaply done and the guy interviewing Rick seems like an idiot. But anyways Ricks
happy go luck personality really shows here as he preforms "Stage Fright", gives a cool interview, and preforms "Blue River". Ricks awesome personality really shines through here. He seems just like a big kid.
*Sorry for the incompleteness, this is how it was when I found it.

I saw them together on 2 different occasions in a small local restaurant and watched both shows each night from living room close, the Rick Danko Band with his brother was great also. Makes it hard to listen the radio nowadays. SDo much great music has been lost over the years to show business.

Rick and Richard both used falsetto vocals when the performance required. Some material written by Robbie was 3rd person and some was first person: Daniel and the sacred harp vs The Shape I'm In, Unfaithful Servant... Of course the rough hewn harmonies with Levon on The Night They Drove Ole Dixie Down, Volcano from Cahoots. In summary, with 3 lead vocalists, Robbie had no problem writing historical fantasies such as The Rumor & Chest Fever. The contributions of Garth, Rick, Richard and Levon were credited on the album, but seldom hilited in interviews.

Rick was such a kind hearted soul. Clearly the interviewer was a dolt and Rick could have easily ripped him a new one. I bet more people watched this clip on youtube then ever watched "The Real Story", all episodes COMBINED, and the dumb ass didn't even realize that this one clip would be HIS ONLY claim to fame. Rick was such a nice guy. RIP brother.

I was frustrated at the interruptions because he wasn't wandering, he had stuff I wanted to hear, but probably a time limit. This man, what a soul, no matter what shape his voice is in, his singing is all heart and he knows, like all great singers when the pipes get older, how to put it all across, absolutely make you cry and get you just as much as the first time you heard him.

Rick always stood out to me as a very heart felt performer that had so much soul in his music. I think he was a major influence on Bob Dylan and probably inspired many of Dylans songs. I can hear Rick's style coming through many of Dylans songs. Just his sweet melodies were amazing. He could have been a major major star had he been promoted like Dylan. He seemed to be so modest and such and giving person. He was so positive in his personality. I didnt' know him but it brings a tear when I hear him sing with such strong emotion.

Rick took it in stride. They all did after Robbie. They made many fans playing small clubs disassociated from the band, (or rather Robbie). They played the songs with passion and created their own. I am not very old, tho discovered these guys many years ago. They've shaped and encouraged me, and as I go, I find a whole new generation fed, satiated by these.

Interviewer seemed like he wanted Rick to stay focused and get out as much information wiithin a limited time. Bottom line here was that Rick was able to promote two upcoming album releases and his upcoming NYC live show as well as get that tune (Blue River) out before the commercial break. I'd say the interviewer helped Rick out a lot.

@cwhites1 I had the pleasure of seeing The Band (minus Robbie) here in Australia, I think 1986-87, shortly after Richard passed. Rick played his heart out that night, it's a gig I'll never forget being at. The Band were quite unique in that each member was a talent on his own, together they wrote/recorded/performed beautifully soulful music. I envy your friendship with Rick Danko, having never had the pleasure of meeting him, but I play his music often.

One of the coolest things about the Band is that all of them (except for perhaps Richard, and it's not for lack of musical talent) would all have been able to have successful solo careers, they're that good individually. It's also freaky how multi-instrumental they are -- Rick could have never touched a bass in his life and still become famous on the guitar.

You can be critical of Rick, not every performance of his was stellar. However, watch and listen to "It makes no difference" and Stage Freight from the last waltz, and you will see his musical genius. Also his singing on Evangeline, and The Weight, and his playing fiddle on Evangeline and That old time religion. He sings with so much soul, and have so much charisma. Does not mean he was always great, but then few are.
