A little story for those that loved Rick...In the mid 80's I went to see Jerry Garcia Band at a small club in Poughkeepsie,N.Y. It was small, very small and when I got inside I was pleasantly surprised to find out Rick Danko was opening, solo acoustic. He came out smiling and said,"This is like seeing Jerry in his living room!" He was great that night just like countless other nights.

@@lewstone5430unfortunately that’s not true. He was arrested for heroin possession in Japan in 1997 because his wife sent him heroin in the mail. I’m not judging him at all, he struggled with addiction for much of his adult life. Just pointing out that it’s unfortunately false that he had fully gotten through his opiate addiction by this time.

Oh God,ANOTHER one who doesn't understand the word ' underrated ' and thinks it's cool to say...so and so ( insert name of extremely famous and talented musician) is underrated. NO,NO,NO,NO,NO! It's become the standard line about everyone who's basically a music legend. I'm going to be really controversial and cool and say they're underrated. No,you don't sound ' cool' you just look stupid, as he's clearly not underrated ,just the opposite in fact. He was a member of one of the best bands ever,a band who influenced countless others,he was highly rated and respected by everyone. He makes all the lists of top bassists. Nobody's ever thought of him as underrated, he's extremely rated by fans, critics and fellow musicians.

Rick had a longtime addiction to anything that would ease the pain resulting from his 1969 car crash in Woodstock. He was arrested in Japan while on tour with Danko/Fjeld/Andersen; supposedly, he cleaned up while awaiting trial, but...according to Jim Weider...relapsed not long before his death. He and Elizabeth Danko had been evicted from their home and were living in a motel when he died...less than a week after his last show in Ann Arbor (the Video is on KZfaq...it’s a hard watch if you love Danko).

@@aarfeld you said it's a "revelation". Watch the movie again: Robbie talks about being tired of touring, Rick says he's going to keep doing what he's doing. And both did exactly like they said they would. The only revelation is that you thought they said more than they really did.

@@aarfeld Robbie would have been in in a second in 1983 had the other guys been in for a creative process. Meaning Robbie would have brought a set of new songs. But they decided to take the nostalgia act route, sadly, if I may say so. Lot of things could have gone differently than they eventually did.

No, Robbie wrote amazing songs and even when he stopped playing with them, the others still played his songs. Levon never wrote more than few songs in his entire life, as great as he was as a musician. But Robbie was the creative force and the man with a vision. All of them were still equally needed to make The Band happen.
