A note about Rick Mercer: He is beloved in Canada not only for his great sense of humour but also for HIS love of Canada. He used to travel from town to town, place to place, across Canada, showcasing regular Canadians and their communities. It was special in that Canadians got to see our neighbours in the smallest towns, the most out-of-way locations, and across this entire nation. We got to learn about industries, jobs, events, inventions, interesting things to see and do in Canada that we may not have known about. And the best part, we could tell Rick Mercer absolutely loved his country and his fellow Canadians. His interest, empathy, and pride were contagious.

I once lived in Windsor, Ontario. If you look at a map you'll see that Windsor is actually due south of Detroit. One day I was walking in the downtown area and met a confused looking young woman searching for a place to buy a cold beverage. I walked her to a 7-11 and she told me she worked in a downtown Detroit office building (which, if you know where it is you'll realize actually has a view of Windsor across the river) and decided to get away to Canada for her vacation. She said there was a pool in her hotel, but she hadn't brought her swimsuit because she thought it would be too cold to swim. TRUE STORY!

As a french Quebequer, I always adored Rick Mercer, even if he laughed at us, he did it with smarts and wits. I miss him so much!

After ten years living in the US I finally got to move back home to Canada in 2022. During my more extreme home sickness in the last few years I'd watch clips like these and then the fabulous Rick Mercer Report (15 seasons, you might check it out) His satire helped us deal!! Thank you Rick!

My favourite part is of course, "Congratulations, Canada on getting your first Woodie!" The setup was perfect. Favourite part overall, the kid who knows about Canadian provinces. I was so relieved when I first saw it that I wanted to reach through the TV and hug him. He almost redeemed his country

OMG, that was hilarious. I once told a group of Americans that the reason they seldom saw older Canadians going south for the winter was that when a Canadian turns 80 we send them out to sea on an iceberg. Yes, they believed me.

I am Canadian and grew up watching American television. I learned a lot about the world from watching National Georgraphic specials in the 60s and 70s. I learned a lot about the natural world and other sciences from various documentaries on the Public Broadcasting System. I am always astonished that Americans didn't take more advantage of the wealth of their own broadcasts.

CBC actually has a show called 'This Hour has 22 Minutes' and Rick Mercer writes and performs on the show. It focuses on politics with comedy skits, news parodys etc. It's amazing that Rick can keep a straight face during these interviews.

Like so many other people that are commenting. Even though this is a few years ago. I think south of the border have not improved , I live in Vancouver, and often travel to the US. Time to get so frustrating. I just tell them I live north of Seattle instead of spending an hour trying to explain why I don’t live in an igloo, speak with a French accent and so on. I guess when you’re number one priority, is your military education ends up being like this. Bravo to these videos, my friend . Hi again from Canada..... When Americans tried to do same to Canadians on the streets.... there were no fish to hook on their lines.. I remeber watching this in 1998, and it blew my mind how little Americans know about Canada. To put into perspective, i was 14 when it first aired. And I already followed american geography, news, and politics at the time. Via, yes cbc news coverage on tv, because internet sucked at the time. Still amuses me however. I dont like all of rick mercers bits, but some of his "rants" (i cant remember if they were at the beginning or end of the show) i really enjoyed. How his cameraperson didnt fall over backwards during those i have yet to figure out. They would be outdated now. But worth watching. Its sort of like john oliver light (as in what was acceptable for public tv at the time)

Some explanations for the non-obvious jokes for non-Canadians (the Toronto polar bear hunting or 20 hour day are pretty obvious): - Saskatchewan and Alberta are landlocked provinces, there are no ice floes or seals. - "Prime Minister Tim Horton and double-doubles": Tim Horton is a donut-restaurant chain and a double-double is a coffee order with two creams and two sugars. - Prime Minister Jean Chretien is french-canadian. - The follow-up joke of calling him "Jean Creton". Creton is a savory pork based meat spread. - "Peter Mansbridge" is the name of a then well known TV newscaster (now retired) - Canada has largest sea coast in the world (greater than Russia even, due to multiple islands). - Gordon Lightfoot (who recently passed away on May 1 2023) is a singer song-writer and is of Scottish descent. - Surprisingly, the one-dollar and two-dollar coins really are nicknamed the Loonie and Toonie. There is no five dollar coin.

I've loved that Peter Mansbridge bit for so long. It comes to mind every once in a while and I still laugh! And I still miss Peter Mansbridge giving me the news! It was like having a calming father figure each night spend time with you telling you the news. ❤

It is an absolute delight to watch your enjoyment of Rick Mercer's humour! He is an absolute master! His weekly comedy show, The Mercer Report (Rick Mercer Report) clips have lots of interviews with Canadian politicians and entertainers. Jann Arden (Calgary-born singer/songwriter) is a great sport! Among other stunts, he had her to do the outdoor catwalk at the top of the CN Tower in Toronto. He did bungee jumping with Rick Hansen ("Man in Motion", who went around the world in his wheelchair for spinal cord injury research). Dozens of other great videos and his weekly "Rants" in a heavily-graffitied alley behind the CBC Building gave common-sense reaction to various current affairs, often ascerbic, but with his fantastic sense of humour!❤

There are so many in jokes within this that only Canadians would understand, like Peter Mansbridge. 😆

My 2 favourite lines in this one have to be "in 30 yrs of democracy, we haven't had a single recount" &"The only problem in Canada is after 1000 people have voted that's very heavy, you get 150 pinecones it weighs a couple of kilometres." There are more of these. I remember one that made me laugh so hard...it was about staplers. I'm not sure if we were legalizing them or outlawing them, but it was hilarious.

Hi , I'm Canadian from BC . I flew out of Bellingham Washington to Las Vegas one time , coming back a woman in her mid 20s sat next to me . I asked if she had ever been to Canada , she said no ( it's 15 min from the border) I had her believing that we were on metric time 100 min to the hour . No kidding real story !

After this was aired the Americans said they were just trying to be polite and went along with Rick Mercer but I don't know. I remember a woman was asked about the states in Canada, she started going along with it but her son said...wait a minute you have provinces...so funny.

I can't remember the comic who did it but there was a guy who had a great bit about Canadian Tire Money being real Canadian money and the Scottish fellow on it (the Canadian Tire 'Mascot') being the "King of Canada." So funny.

Rick Mercer was one of the best Canadian comedy shows I looked forward to. As well there was The Frantics: Four On The Floor, The Kids in the Hall, The Red Green Show, This Hour Has 22 Minutes, and of course, SCTV.

Rick Mercer used to be on a show called This Hour Has 22 minutes . Every week he did a rant ( usually in an alley , or somewhere like that ). His rants were aimed at politicians' questionable policies , and public figures responsible for doing something stupid . He has a book called Rick Mercer : Final Report that includes those rants . You should definitely read it .

Rick Mercer is one of the funniest people I have ever heard. He puts questions to the Americans in such a way they answer not knowing if what he is saying is true. Just crazy funny. He is a Newfoundlander and they have the best humours and can make a joke out of just about anything. He is the best and is a Canadian to the bone. Just love him to pieces.

You can look up "This Hour has 22 Minutes" which Rick was hilarious on for years before he got his own show "The Rick Mercer Report" both political satire. Rick's man about the stree rants are legendary.

As a Canadian, I have had conversations with US citizens where I had to explain to them that they will not see polar bears on Vancouver Island.

The bit about the use of jets was even funnier when you think that the first passenger jet in North America, the C 102 Jetliner, was designed and built in Canada by AVRO Canada in the late 40s.

I've watched his stand up, read some of his books, his show the Mercer Report was great for seeing different parts of Canada, different celebrities and politicians out of their element and more relatable, his sign off was hysterical and so many people missed the joke for ten years, but his segment on proper joint rolling techniques with an octogenarian Pierre Berton was epic.

This was classic humour back in the day.

Like others have said, Peter Mansbridge was a Canadian newscaster. He retired a number of years ago, but still comes back for major events, like national election results/commentary. He's a Canadian legend with a recognizable voice. He had a cameo as "Peter Moosebridge" in the Disney movie Zootopia.

Peter Mansbridge hosted CBC news for years. He was born in Churchill MB, and was highly regarded as a news announcer; one of the best. 🙂 Rick was very funny during that bit.

Gordon Lightfoot was a popular Canadian country singer/songwriter. I got to meet him one time when I was young and working in a restaurant and he came in. He just passed away this year. Peter mansbridge is retired now but he was the Number one news anchor in Canada for a few decades.
