In this episode of Sounding Off we are talking with Film Composer Mark Isham. Mark will tell you everything you need to know about the job of being a Film Composer. From the ideas to all the technology associated with it DAW, Temp Music, Orchestration and the Recording and Mixing process.
Here's more about Mark:
It was an accidental series of events that brought Isham into the world of film music. Already an established performer and recording artist, he began to experiment with electronic music. In 1983, Isham released his solo debut album Vapor Drawings. He circulated a demo intended for ECM Records, but fortuitously caught the attention of film director Carroll Ballard. Ballard was searching for a new sound for a project and was impressed by Isham’s unique music and hired him to compose the score for Disney’s critically acclaimed film Never Cry Wolf.
While developing as a film composer, Mark Isham continued to prosper and gain notoriety for his work in electronic and new age. He won a Grammy for his Virgin Records release, Mark Isham and Grammy nominations for his albums Castalia and Tibet. Although honored in the electronic and new age genres, Isham is perhaps most celebrated for his contributions to jazz. He has collaborated and performed with jazz legends including Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock and Bobby McFerrin. Mark Isham’s jazz releases have received critical-acclaim: Blue Sun was included in Downbeat’s “Top 100 Jazz Albums of the Decade;” and The London Times named Miles Remembered: The Silent Way Project “Best Jazz Album.″
The sought-after composer continues to demonstrate his diverse musical voice in over one-hundred film and TV scores including Eight Below, The Cooler, Blade, Nell, The Secret Life of Bees, in addition to A River Runs Through It and Men of Honor both resulting in Grammy nominations. Other credits include Warrior, Dolphin Tale, Point Break and the Jackie Robinson biopic 42. Isham’s suite from the film 42 was premiered by the New York Philharmonic during the MLB Sandy Relief Concert in Central Park and played at Dodger stadium on “Jackie Robinson Day.” Currently, in addition to scoring his sixth season of ABC’s hit series Once Upon a Time, he also scores Oscar-winner John Ridley’s ABC’s drama American Crime. Directors constantly return to Isham on new projects. The composer reunites with director Gavin O’Connor for the upcoming film The Accountant starring Ben Affleck and Anna Kendrick and with director Scott Hicks’ on the upcoming feature Fallen. Isham is also working with first time director, animation veteran Christopher Jenkins (The Lion King, Aladdin) on the upcoming animated film Duck Duck Goose.

Mark Isham’s collective contributions to the film music community was recognized by his peers when he was awarded the highest honor for a composer by The American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP), the prestigious Henry Mancini Career Achievement Award for musical excellence. He continues to display a boundless ability to electrify listeners with his talent for crafting evocative new musical works in varying genres and mediums

This is my favourite Sounding off episode so far. Rick, please keep asking these great musicians how they come up with ideas! Everyone's process is different and it would be very useful for experimentation.

Great questions. Love it Rick. Thanks so much. I was lucky to meet Mark (and Sid Page, Pete Maunu) in 2004 at The Hague NorthSea Jazz. Yes, Mark is an outstanding composer, with his best scores mid 80's up to mid 90's. His trumpet sound in combination with Prophet 5 is my favorite

Mark Isham's music is not just for movie soundtracks. His soundtracks and Windham Hill releases and his albums on Virgin are good mood music to play when creating work of one's own or just great, evocative yet unobtrusive music to be played in the background. I especially like the "Film Music" album, especially "Never Cry Wolf" and "The Life and Times of Harvey Milk" (the music for the candlelight march in S.F. just breaks your heart; I bet the music helped that documentary win an Academy Award.) His soundtrack to "Trouble in Mind" is also great, and the soundtrack he created to "The Hitcher" is about as chilling as it gets.Great to see him interviewed; always wondered what he was like as he seems to keep such a low key profile.

what a great informative interview, spot on . I always look forward to Marks scores and share a similar background in developing craft over many years of playing live before breaking into film scoring. Also a big fan of electronic music in film, ambient droning , textures, etc combined with live instruments.

I'm a big fan of Mark - he makes some amazing music! And it was awesome to hear from him that creativity doesn't come from thinking - that's something I discovered a while back, myself. The only downside from the interview is that it was too short! Rick, you need to go back and make a part 2 and 3. lol

I love his score to Point Break (synths with orchestra) and think it's a perfect example of how to add mood/atmosphere to a film with 'soundscape' textures. I'd like to ask him what inspired that approach, and if he intentionally borrowed from Pink Floyd because there is a little melody in the film that sounds very similar to the Shine On You Crazy Diamond riff/melody.

Prophet 5...I remember those and I wanted one so badly because the Human League used one. I managed to get a micromoog, which I thought was a poor second, but no it was a (relatively) little box of magic.

Hi Rick, you could ask Virgil Donati too for example, because of his in depth style of playing, your shared Italian descent, but also a person played close with Allan Holdsworth, even did his last concert...Just an idea man.

You have a high degree of insight, Rick. This is a great idea, to share the wisdom of such interesting musicians and music professionals with anyone who may be trying to sort things out, and hopefully find ideas and goals that work for them & and are worth pursuing. I wouldn't be surprised, if merely listening to your videos repetitiously would help a viewer to absorb these various concepts in ways that will bear fruit for years to come. In my case, each listening reveals something I might have missed or not fully understood, and even if I don't go on to make something happen in my own pursuits, I may do better when younger musicians ask me for advice. I'm not really a teacher, and so I often worry that I'll give bad advice on some level, and it's worth more than I can guess that I have some firm ground to stand on. Now, at the very least, when someone asks me what can help them to improve as a musician, I can reply with, "Have you ever seen this guy Rick Beato's KZfaq videos?"

I kind of have to agree and disagree (at the same time) with Marks idea of creativity and how much thinking can ruin things.. I agree that overthinking is harmful and non conducive to creative moments, It's no excuse for not learning all you can about music and your instrument. If you become proficient both technically and theoretically to the point where you don't "think about it" there no stopping your creativity , But first you must reach that level and then consciously decide to "let go" while you are creating/performing/composing/improvising

Greta interview! I agree on the sentiment of classical music in the 50s-70s, but want to add another exception of quality music that got made by Harry Partch and his crew, notably for me, Ben Johnston. In tone, I would think that it can be very applicable to certain kinds of film scoring, with one very big problem: being able to notate it and crank it out quickly on a film production schedule, at least for non-minimalist styles that depend on melody and counterpoint more than rhythm and texture. There are some very sharp people working with stuff like this, but none as far as I know in the film industry, which is IMHO a shame. My favorite example: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oM12hKR43qyUd6s.html
